Book Failure Strain for Irradiated Zircaloy Based on Subsized Specimen Testing and Analysis

Download or read book Failure Strain for Irradiated Zircaloy Based on Subsized Specimen Testing and Analysis written by RB. Adamson and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes specimen geometries that have proven useful in characterizing the mechanical behavior of irradiated Zircaloy components. In many cases, small plane strain-type specimens obtained from the component of interest have been chosen. Specimen fabrication techniques are discussed. Failure strains for the various types of specimens are compared and analyzed in terms of the microdeformation mechanisms that occur in irradiated Zircaloy. Finite element analyses of specimens are conducted to determine details of the strain distribution just before the initiation of plastic instability. Results of these analyses are used to determine the maximum principal plastic strain at the failure initiation point.

Book Strain Hardening Parameter Evaluation of Irradiated Zircaloy 2

Download or read book Strain Hardening Parameter Evaluation of Irradiated Zircaloy 2 written by KS. Balakrishnan and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The strain hardening parameter of irradiated Zircaloy-2, has been evaluated using two empirical equations, namely Hollomon's and Voce's. Room temperature ring tension test data generated on irradiated fuel element cladding tubes as well as the 573 K tension test data obtained on irradiated pressure tubes, were utilised. The cladding tubes were from fuel elements of Tarapur Atomic Power Station (TAPS) that had experienced burnup ranging from 6000 to 15000 MWD/T. The pressure tubes had undergone 3.6 Effective Full Power Years of operation in Rajasthan Atomic Power Station (RAPS). Of the two equations employed for the study, Voce's equation was found to be more suitable for predicting the uniform ductility and ultimate tensile strength values in conformity with experimentally observed results.

Book Modeling of Localized Deformation in Neutron Irradiated Zircaloy 2

Download or read book Modeling of Localized Deformation in Neutron Irradiated Zircaloy 2 written by RB. Adamson and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The onset of plastic instability in irradiated materials is known to be governed by deformation processes that occur on a microscopic scale. In order to identify the nature of the controlling mechanisms giving rise to plastic instability, details of the deformation processes were examined for Zircaloy-2 irradiated to fluences of 1.0 to 3.0 x 1021 neutrons (n)/cm2 (E >1 MeV) and tested in inert and 0.3-torr iodine atmospheres at 322 ~ 335°C. For irradiated materials tested in air, it was shown that plastic strain at the maximum load decreased by more than an order of magnitude relative to unirradiated material, especially under plane-stress conditions. This was due largely to concentrated shear deformation resulting from dislocation channel development. When the similar materials were tested in iodine, the load-carrying capacity was reduced further. Based on the evidence obtained by metallographic examination, a model has been proposed describing deformation behavior of irradiated plane-stress specimens by assuming consecutive formation and strain hardening of new deformation zones containing channels. Crack nucleation under an iodine atmosphere is believed to occur when the local strain at the channel zone becomes sufficiently large to break oxide films and cause intergranular cracking.
