Book excerpt: Entre 1986 y 1989, el Instituto Nacional de Salud realizo una encuesta dirigida a una muestra representativa de la poblacion nacional. Para ello el pais fue dividido en cinco regiones con caracteristicas propias, cada una de ellas, . En este documento se evaluan los conocimientos actitudes y practicas en salud materno infantil, atendiendo cuatro aspectos: enfermedad diarreica aguda, infeccion respiratoria aguda, programa ampliado de inmunizaciones y planificacion familiar. La utilizacion de sales de rehidratacion oral no logra la cobertura deseable; solo 17 por ciento de madres lo emplean y un 12 por ciento recurre al suero casero. Los conocimientos actitudes y practicas en infeccion respiratoria aguda no alcanzan los niveles apropiados. El 72 por ciento de las madres administra jarabes y drogas en su mayoria no prescritas por el medico; tan solo el 7 por ciento hace vaporizaciones al menor. El programa ampliado de inmunizaciones ha alcanzado una gran aceptacion; el conocmimiento las actitudes y las practicas en vacunacion asi lo demuestran. El estudio pudo demostrar que el 32 por ciento de las mujeres en edad fertil usaron algun metodo anticonceptivo durante el mes anterior a la realizacion de la entrevista. La pildora y el DIU resultaron ser los metodos mas conocidos y usados. Se observa que aun existe una gran brecha entre lo que saben los medicos y el personal de salud y lo que conocen y practican las familias. Esto hace necesario buscar mecanismos que consigan romper dicha brecha, por cuanto que ellos junto con medidas que persigan elevar el nivel de vida y mejorar las condiciones sanitarias, permitiran acercarnos a la meta que en materia de salud materno infantil.
