Book excerpt: This report examines the participation of older undergraduates, above age 24, in postsecondary education using data from the 1989-90 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS:90) and the 1990-92 Beginning Postsecondary Student Longitudinal Study (BPS:90/92). It profiles older undergraduates and compares them with younger undergraduates with regard to demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, enrollment patterns, how they combine working with studying, and the types, sources, and amounts of financial aid they receive. It describes the participation of selected subgroups of older undergraduates including those employed full time, those enrolled full time, those enrolled less than half time, those assisted by their employers, those without high school diplomas, and single parents. Examination of persistence and attainment among older students who enrolled in postsecondary education for the first time in 1989-90 covers combining working and studying, participation in campus activities and programs, and controlling factors related to persistence. Some of the report's highlights include: (1) in 1989-90, 42 percent of all undergraduates were 24 years or older; (2) a majority of older undergraduates were married and had dependents other than a spouse; (3) 59 percent of older undergraduates attended a public less-than-4-year institution (compared with 33 percent of younger undergraduates). Book excerpt: This study used data on 1992 high school graduates from the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 (a survey that began with eighth graders in 1988 and followed them every two years through 1994) to examine the critical junctures when at-risk high school graduates are most likely to leave the pipeline to college enrollment, and to identify factors that increase their chances of successfully navigating the enrollment pipeline. An at-risk student was defined as having risk factors such as being from a single parent household, having an older sibling who dropped out of high school, and earning low grades between sixth and eighth grades. Highlights of the findings include: about 58 percent of graduates had one or more risk factors; of these, 30 percent successfully navigated the pipeline to college enrollment; at-risk students differed most from counterparts in their educational aspirations and academic preparation; and academically prepared at-risk students were much less likely than counterparts to take an entrance exam. After an introductory chapter, two chapters detail data and definitions and provide an overview of students at risk. The following two chapters present findings on the pipeline to a four-year college and compare at-risk students regarding completion of math courses, help received in the college application process, and level of school involvement of students, parents, and peers. Appended are a glossary, technical notes, and supplementary tables. (DB)

Book excerpt: From 1995-96 to 2007-08, the number of students enrolled in undergraduate education in the United States grew from about 16.7 million to 21 million. These Web Tables provide information on undergraduates during the 1995-96, 1999-2000, 2003-04, and 2007-08 academic years. Estimates are presented for all undergraduates and for undergraduates who attended public 2- and 4-year, private nonprofit, and for-profit institutions by student and enrollment characteristics, hours worked while enrolled, and community service activities. The tables are grouped into three sections. Section 1 presents estimates by selected student characteristics. The tables look at undergraduates' enrollment by age, gender, race/ethnicity, dependency status, marital status and parenthood, income, citizenship, type of high school attended, and parent education. Section 2 focuses on undergraduates' postsecondary enrollment and attendance. The tables display estimates by institution and program level, attendance intensity, in-state attendance, participation in distance education, remedial coursetaking, and attendance at more than one institution. Undergraduate major fields of study are presented for undergraduates who attended public and nonprofit 4-year institutions or were in an associate's degree program at a public 2-year institution. Section 3 looks at undergraduates' work and community service. The tables provide information about students' work intensity while enrolled, average and median hours worked per week, primary role as a student or an employee, participation in community service activities, and the average and median hours volunteered per month. Book excerpt: "The economics of American higher education are driven by one key factor--the availability of students willing to pay tuition--and many related factors that determine what schools they attend. By digging into the data, economist Nathan Grawe has created probability models for predicting college attendance. What he sees are alarming events on the horizon that every college and university needs to understand. Overall, he spots demographic patterns that are tilting the US population toward the Hispanic southwest. Moreover, since 2007, fertility rates have fallen by 12 percent. Higher education analysts recognize the destabilizing potential of these trends. However, existing work fails to adjust headcounts for college attendance probabilities and makes no systematic attempt to distinguish demand by institution type. This book analyzes demand forecasts by institution type and rank, disaggregating by demographic groups. Its findings often contradict the dominant narrative: while many schools face painful contractions, demand for elite schools is expected to grow by 15+ percent. Geographic and racial profiles will shift only slightly--and attendance by Asians, not Hispanics, will grow most. Grawe also use the model to consider possible changes in institutional recruitment strategies and government policies.
