Book Le potentiel transformateur de l industrie mini re en Afrique

Download or read book Le potentiel transformateur de l industrie mini re en Afrique written by Sudeshna Ghosh Banerjee and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2015-02-17 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa needs power—power to enhance the welfare of its people and expand its economies. But Sub-Saharan Africa’s power sector has the lowest generation capacity in the world. Two-thirds of the regional population remains without electricity and even those with access consume the least among the world’s regions. Businesses say unreliable electricity is a major hurdle. Meanwhile, vast energy resources remain untapped. One possible solution is to leverage the mining industry’s substantial need for power as an anchor for energy infrastructure development. 'The Power of the Mine: A Transformative Opportunity for Sub-Saharan Africa' is the first study to systematically analyze both the potential and the challenges of power-mining integration. The findings show that industry demand for electricity can be a game changer. Mining operations often devote a quarter or more of operating costs to electricity. This consistent, high-volume demand can spur development of national power systems, thus expanding electrification for the populace. As a result, citizens can also benefit from safe, adequate access to electricity. Countries benefit from larger exports and tax revenues, more business and job opportunities, and higher GDP. Utilities benefit from having creditworthy mining partners as a core source of revenue that attracts investment. And mines benefit from the significant cost reductions a stable power grid provides. 'The Power of the Mine' will be of interest to policymakers, researchers, and business analysts engaged in energy infrastructure development.

Book excerpt: This extensive bibliography and reference guide is an invaluable resource for researchers, practitioners, students, and anyone with an interest in Canadian film and video. With over 24,500 entries, of which 10,500 are annotated, it opens up the literature devoted to Canadian film and video, at last making it readily accessible to scholars and researchers. The work is bilingual; descriptive annotations are presented in the language(s) of the original publication. Canadian Film and Video / Film et vidéo canadiens provides an in-depth guide to the work of over 4000 individuals working in film and video and 5000 films and videos. The entries in Volume I cover topics such as film types, the role of government, laws and legislation, censorship, festivals and awards, production and distribution companies, education, cinema buildings, women and film, and video art. A major section covers filmmakers, video artists, cinematographers, actors, producers, and various other film people. Volume II presents an author index, a film and video title index, and a name and subject index. In the tradition of the highly acclaimed publication Art and Architecture in Canada these volumes fill a long-standing need for a comprehensive reference tool for Canadian film and video. This bibliography guides and supports the work of film historians and practitioners, media librarians and visual curators, students and researchers, and members of the general public with an interest in film and video.

Book Creative Industries in Canada

Download or read book Creative Industries in Canada written by Miranda Campbell and published by Canadian Scholars. This book was released on 2022-08-05 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creative Industries in Canada is a foundational text that encourages students to think critically about creative industries within a Canadian context and interrogate the current state and future possibilities of the industry. While much of current creative industries literature concerns the United Kingdom, the United States, and Asia, this text captures the breadth of how Canadian industries are organized and experienced, and how they operate. This ambitious collection aims to guide students through the current landscape of Canadian creative industries through three thematic sections. “Production” collects chapters focused on how national discourses and identities are produced through creative industries and the tensions that exist between policy and media. “Participation” explores how we engage with these industries in different roles: as consumer, creator, policy-maker, and more. “Pedagogies” explores how education impacts inclusion and visibility in creative industries. Truly intersectional, Creative Industries in Canada provides students with practical industry knowledge and frameworks to explore the current state of the field and its future. With a broad application to many undergraduate programs, this text is a must-read resource for those pursuing media studies, arts management, creative and cultural industries studies, communications, and arts and humanities.

Book excerpt: While bok choy is now a staple on Western grocery store shelves, other Asian vegetables remain unknown—even though they’re delicious, nutritious, and easy to grow in northern climates. Caroline, Stéphanie, and Patricia Wang, three sisters of Cantonese descent, have made it their mission to introduce gardeners, cooks, and vegetable lovers of all flavours to wider sources of sustenance. Organized around fifteen Asian vegetables that are presented according to the rhythm of the seasons, this lush, full-colour book offers advice on growing and harvesting organic crops intended for both weekend and commercial gardeners, along with a host of ideas to preserve and prepare them, including over forty recipes, some of which have been developed by renowned chefs. The Wang sisters complement the book’s practical advice by offering thoughts on Asian vegetables from a cultural point of view and sharing the importance of these foods within their own family, members of whom left China to immigrate to Madagascar before settling in Canada. Asian Vegetables is a generous and gorgeous tribute to good food, to the land, and the importance of strong roots.

Book Rescaling International Political Economy

Download or read book Rescaling International Political Economy written by Darel E. Paul and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major trend in recent years in political and economic geography has been the increasingly sophisticated use of the concept of scale. Rescaling International Political Economy sits squarely in geographical debates regarding scale and globalization, but Darel Paul does it within the framework if international political economy. In particular, he argues for the importance of subnational states and localities in creating globalization, and focuses on regions in North America. Alongside his arguments about scalar transformations, Paul looks at how the processes serve transnational capital and how they work to construct the transnational capitalist class which currently rules the globe. His regulationist approach, which stresses how the centrality of state institutions in managing the global economy, will revolutionize how we think about globalization.
