  • Release : 1977
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book Ya ovarman of Kanauj written by Shyam Manohar Mishra and published by Abhinav Publications. This book was released on 1977 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Is The First Monograph On Yasovarman Of Kanauj, Dealing Comprehensively With All Aspects Of His History And Career. It Also Critically Surveys The Obscure Political History Of Northern India And Gives A Vivid Account Of The Social And Cultural Life Of The Period. The Work For The First Time Treats At Length The Ancestry And Date Of Yasovarman, The Identification Of The King Of Gauda Killed By Him, The Date Of Yasovarman'S Battle With Lalitaditya And Also Most Tantalizing Problem Of The Successors Of The Kanauj King. And The Author Has Considerably Improved The Earlier Views On These Problems. Dr. Mishra Has Chosen His Hero About Whom So Little Is Known, And He Has Made A Very Good Use Of Rather Scanty Materials At His Disposal. He Has Very Ably Marshalled All Facts That Could Be Culled From All Available Direct And Indirect Sources Having The Slightest Bearing On The Career And Period Of Yasovarman'S Reign, Classified Them In Proper Order And Presented A Very Cogent Story In A Lucid And Persuasive Style. His Presentation Is Very Good, Documentation Very Creditable And Analysis Logical And Critical. His Interpretation Of The Famous Passage In The Gaudavaho (Allegedly Mentioning Lalitaditya'S Invasion Of Kanauj), And Fixing The Date Of (Yasovarman'S) Battle With Lalitaditya Deserves Careful Consideration (Extracts From The Report Of Dr. B.P. Shinha, Professor And Head Of The Deptt. Of Ancient Indian History, Patna University . The Author Is Able To Reconstruct The Course Of Events In Greater Detail Than Before, By A Careful Study Of Recently Published Inscriptional Evidence And From Literary Sources Which Hitherto Have Been Little Noticed In This Context. Thus He Produces A Very Well Reasoned Analysis Of The Subject Which Forms A Very Positive Contribution Of Knowledge. In Social Life, The Nature Of The Material Is Such That Important Original Points Could Not Be Expected, But The Author Makes A Number Of Small Positive Contributions Especially Regarding The Status Of Women And The Dress Of The Period (Extracts From The Report Of Dr. A.L. Basham, Prof. Of Asian Civilization, Australian National University, Canberra).

Book One Amazing Thing

Download or read book One Amazing Thing written by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2010-02-02 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An acclaimed novel by the author of The Mistress of Spices, and Before We Visit the Goddess. Jhumpa Lahiri praises: "One Amazing Thing collapses the walls dividing characters and cultures; what endures is a chorus of voices in one single room." Late afternoon sun sneaks through the windows of a passport and visa office in an unnamed American city. Most customers and even most office workers have come and gone, but nine people remain. A punky teenager with an unexpected gift. An upper-class Caucasian couple whose relationship is disintegrating. A young Muslim-American man struggling with the fallout of 9/11. A graduate student haunted by a question about love. An African-American ex-soldier searching for redemption. A Chinese grandmother with a secret past. And two visa office workers on the verge of an adulterous affair. When an earthquake rips through the afternoon lull, trapping these nine characters together, their focus first jolts to their collective struggle to survive. There's little food. The office begins to flood. Then, at a moment when the psychological and emotional stress seems nearly too much for them to bear, the young graduate student suggests that each tell a personal tale, "one amazing thing" from their lives, which they have never told anyone before. And as their surprising stories of romance, marriage, family, political upheaval, and self-discovery unfold against the urgency of their life-or-death circumstances, the novel proves the transcendent power of stories and the meaningfulness of human expression itself. From Chitra Divakaruni, author of such finely wrought, bestselling novels as Sister of My Heart, The Palace of Illusions, and The Mistress of Spices, comes her most compelling and transporting story to date. One Amazing Thing is a passionate creation about survival -- and about the reasons to survive.
