Book Professions in Civil Society and the State

Download or read book Professions in Civil Society and the State written by David Sciulli and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professions are central to any political sociology of major associations, organizations and venues in civil society underpinning democracy; they are not a subset of livelihoods in a mundane sociology of work and occupations. "Professions in Civil Society and the State" is at once elegant and startling in its directness and the sheer scope of its implications for future comparative research and theory. Not since Talcott Parsons during the early 1970s has any sociologist (or political scientist) pursued this line of inquiry. Sciulli s theoretical approach differs fundamentally from Parsons and rests on a breadth of historical and cross-national support that always eluded him. The sociology of professions has come full circle, leaving behind Parsons, his critics, and two generations of received wisdom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Service learning, as defined by the editors, is the generation of knowledge that is of benefit to the community as a whole. This seventh volume in the Outreach Scholarship book series contributes a unique discussion of how service learning functions as a critical cornerstone of outreach scholarship. The sections and chapters of this book marshal evidence in support of the idea that undergraduate service learning, infused throughout the curriculum and coupled with outreach scholarship, is an integral means through which higher education can engage people and institutions of the communities of this nation in a manner that perpetuate civil society. The editors, through this series of models of service learning, make a powerful argument for the necessity of "engaged institutions".

Book Prospects for the Professions in China

Download or read book Prospects for the Professions in China written by William P Alford and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-10-07 with total page 679 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professionals are a growing group in China and increasingly make their presence felt in governance and civil society. At the same time, however, professionals in the West are under increasing pressure from commercialism or scepticism about their ability to rise above self-interest. This book focuses on professionals in China and asks whether developing countries have a fateful choice: to embrace Western models of professional organization as they now exist, or to set off on an independent path, adapting elements of Western practices to their own historical and cultural situation. In doing so, the authors in this volume discuss a wealth of issues, including: the historic antecedents of modern Chinese professionalism; the implications of professionalism as an import in China; the impact of socialism, the developmental state and rampant commercialism on the professions in China; and the feasibility of liberal professions in an illiberal state. To conclude, the book considers whether there might be an emerging professionalism with Chinese characteristics, and how this might have an impact on the professions elsewhere. Prospects for the Professions in China will be of interest to students and scholars of Chinese Studies, law, sociology, medical studies and cultural studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) can make a vital contribution to public health and health systems but harnessing their potential is complex in a Europe where government-CSO relations vary so profoundly. This study is intended to outline some of the challenges and assist policy-makers in furthering their understanding of the part CSOs can play in tandem and alongside government. To this end it analyses existing evidence and draws on a set of seven thematic chapters and six mini case studies. They examine experiences from Austria Bosnia-Herzegovina Belgium Cyprus Finland Germany Malta the Netherlands Poland the Russian Federation Slovenia Turkey and the European Union and make use of a single assessment framework to understand the diverse contexts in which CSOs operate. The evidence shows that CSOs are ubiquitous varied and beneficial and the topics covered in this study reflect such diversity of aims and means: anti-tobacco advocacy food banks refugee health HIV/AIDS prevention and cure and social partnership. CSOs make a substantial contribution to public health and health systems with regards to policy development service delivery and governance. This includes evidence provision advocacy mobilization consensus building provision of medical services and of services related to the social determinants of health standard setting self-regulation and fostering social partnership. However in order to engage successfully with CSOs governments do need to make use of adequate tools and create contexts conducive to collaboration. To guide policy-makers working with CSOs through such complications and help avoid some potential pitfalls the book outlines a practical framework for such collaboration. This suggests identifying key CSOs in a given area; clarifying why there should be engagement with civil society; being realistic as to what CSOs can or will achieve; and an understanding of how CSOs can be helped to deliver.

Book The State of Liberal Professions Concerning Their Functions and Relevance to European Civil Society

Download or read book The State of Liberal Professions Concerning Their Functions and Relevance to European Civil Society written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The liberal professions play an important role in the social and economic development of many European countries. They provide jobs, contribute to economic growth and fulfil important social-welfare functions. They typically provide services that are of high importance for the performance of core state functions. These tasks carried out for the common good and in the public interest include; ensuring legal protection for citizens, ensuring the rule of law within the tax and social levy system and a functioning market economy, as well as providing health care for the population. In all these areas, members of the liberal professions serve as particularly qualified service providers (E.g. as lawyers, auditors, accountants, engineers, medical practitioners). The general public places a great deal of trust in their activities aimed at promoting the public interest, which is why the liberal professions can also be referred to as "trust" professions.^At the level of the European Union, the liberal professions are increasingly gaining in significance. Thus, the European Commission established a working group on the liberal professions in the spring of 2013, which deals with these professions from an economic and legal perspective. The Entrepreneurship Action Plan for 2020, with which the Commission intends to unleash Europe's entrepreneurial potential; emphasises that the liberal professions make a significant contribution to the EU economy. Against this background, the study aims to investigate the social and economic functions of the liberal professions on the one hand, and the legal framework for the legal professions in the Member States on the other hand. It provides an overview of quantitative aspects, economic indicators, functions and legal framework of the liberal professions in Europe using jurisprudential, economic, and social science methods.^In order to achieve this goal, the subject of the study ("The State of Liberal Professions and Their Functions and Relevance to European Civil Society") is divided among several issues for investigation. The present summary reproduces the most significant findings of the study.

Book Civil Society Conflict Resolution and Democracy in Nigeria

Download or read book Civil Society Conflict Resolution and Democracy in Nigeria written by Darren Kew and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-31 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African nations have watched the recent civic dramas of the Arab Spring and Occupy Wall Street asking if they too will see similar civil society actions in their own countries. Nigeria—Africa’s most populous nation—has long enjoyed one of the continent’s most vibrant civil society spheres, which has been instrumental in political change. Initially viewed as contributing to democracy’s development, however, civil society groups have come under increased scrutiny by scholars and policymakers. Do some civil society groups promote democracy more effectively than others? And if so, which ones, and why? By examining the structure, organizational cultures, and methods of more than one hundred Nigerian civil society groups, Kew finds that the groups that best promote democratic development externally are themselves internally democratic. Specifically, the internally democratic civil society groups build more sustainable coalitions to resist authoritarian rule; support and influence political parties more effectively; articulate and promote public interests in a more negotiable fashion; and, most importantly, inculcate democratic norms in their members, which in turn has important democratizing impacts on national political cultures and institutions. Further, internally democratic groups are better able to resolve ethnic differences and ethnic-based tensions than their undemocratically structured peers. This book is a deeply comprehensive account of Nigerian civil society groups in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Kew blends democratic theory with conflict resolution methodologies to argue that the manner in which groups—and states—manage internal conflicts provides an important gauge as to how democratic their political cultures are. The conclusions will allow donors and policymakers to make strategic decisions in their efforts to build a democratic society in Nigeria and other regions.

Book Social Policy for Social Welfare Professionals

Download or read book Social Policy for Social Welfare Professionals written by Simpson, Graeme and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2011-04-27 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social welfare workers in all fields are frequently motivated by a desire to 'work with people,' 'bring about change,' or to 'make a difference.' These ideals are often constrained (even thwarted) by systems and funding that are driven by social policy. This book explores some of the difficulties and dilemmas faced by contemporary social workers as they deliver welfare in a changing policy context. The book takes a skills-based approach to understanding the role and importance of social policy in social welfare practice. Written by experienced educators and authors, it shows readers how to understand, analyze, and engage with policy. It is especially relevant for social workers whose roles are currently being shaped and re-shaped by policies.
