Book excerpt: In order to ameliorate the American educational system, the federal government authorized new legislation under Race to the Top in 2011. One of the legislation’s directives was the connection of student accountability to teacher and principal evaluation. Educators across the country examined existing practices including those governing traditional forms of professional development. Their findings emphasized the need for effective and high quality professional development. Research indicates traditional leadership preparation programs do not provide school leaders with explicit tools to create change in the area of school culture, but there is no agreement in the field regarding methodology. Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS), a comprehensive prevention program, is a research-based framework, which provides professional development for school leaders concerning school culture. Moreover, school leaders across the country have chosen the PBIS platform to help build a contextual, framework in order to develop and maintain a positive school culture. This qualitative research study explored the professional development received by thirteen New York City principals in Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS), and presented their responses. All of the principals, according to the data collected, stated the PBIS professional development they received influenced their own leadership practice causing them to develop a different approach to staff and students. In addition, all of the school leaders asserted that PBIS implementation had a positive influence on school culture. These findings may be useful for school leaders seeking to change school culture through the use of a researched based systematic framework like PBIS.

Book excerpt: Public schools have seen an increase in the use of school-wide positive behavior intervention supports (SWPBIS) to address the emotional and behavioral needs of students. While SWPBIS is a validated, evidence-based practice, teachers often resist the use of this proactive intervention model claiming that they do not have the time or skills to develop interventions to address the students' challenging behaviors. The purpose of this instrumental multi-case study was to systematically explore and compare the personal experiences of staff who ended their resistance to SWPBIS and successfully implemented at the classroom level. A Georgia middle school implementing SWPBIS at the operational level with identified staff who successfully made the paradigm shift to embrace SWPBIS was selected for this study using maximum variation of sampling. Site selection was based on school size, geographic location, Title I status, and inclusion practices. Triangulated data collection methods included semi-structured interviews, Collaborative School Culture Survey (CSCS), direct observations, and field notes. Initial data analysis used research questions as themes along with open coding of emergent themes. Pattern matching techniques allowed cross analysis within case findings using replication techniques and worksheets provided by Stake (2006). Teachers indicated a willingness to turn from resistance to SWPBIS when their administration models the tenants of SWBPIS. The greatest professional development need existed in understanding the basic principles of ABA. Recommendations for future research are given.

There is a great amount of money spent on programs to identify and work with challenging behaviors. One of these programs in Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS). PBIS is a fairly new discipline model that is starting to be used in schools. The purpose of this thesis is to look at the effectiveness of a program like PBIS. The study found that if the PBIS is done effectively in schools, it can have a positive impact on student outcomes. That impact can be shown in better attendance, higher test scores, and fewer problem behaviors throughout the school year. PBIS can also have a positive impact on the staff that works under this model. The study found that teachers who work in an effectively run PBIS setting spend less time with discipline referrals, have continued access to professional development, and are able to use data to help drive instruction where it is needed.
