Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arkansas: Statistics and Information Showing Its Agricultural and Mineral Resources Perhaps no State in the country is better adapted by nature to all the industries and varieties of living from the land than Arkansas. The rich valleys are capable of producing cotton, corn, wheat, oats, and all varieties of grain. The genial warmth of the climate and rich soil make fruit-raising one of the most successful and agreeable occupa tions. The magnificent apples grown in the State have taken the prizes at all the National pomological exhibits of recent years, includ ing the Columbian Exposition in Chicago, in 1893. As a peach grow ing State, Arkansas is equal to Delaware. Its peach products have already made St. Louis the earliest and cheapest peach market in the country. The small fruits, strawberries and others, are grown with surprising ease and success. Stock-raising, for obvious reasons, is most successful, and can be made one of the great industries of the State. The uplands and hill country furnish most excellent grazing, and water, the important feature of stock-raising, is abundant every where. This, in addition to the short winters, during which very little feeding is necessary, the proximity to markets, shipping facili ties, and cheap lands, makes stock-raising one of the most desirable industries that can be engaged in. Unlimited opportunities for the investment of capital in mines of iron, manganese, antimony, zinc, copper, lead, nickel, gypsum, coal, granite, mineral paints and ochres, marls, aluminum, kaolin, potters' and fire clays, fertilizing marls, soap stone, fine marbles, mineral oils, natural gas, and probably other valuable metals and minerals, are offered. The water power of Arkansas is unsurpassed. The streams can be dotted with saw mills and fiouring mills, and why should they not be with cotton mills? Here is an opportunity for live capitalists. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Regional Planning, Vol. 12: Arkansas Valley; June 1943 W'ithin the Arkansas Valley are abundant resources: minerals, fuels, timber, agricultural products and manpower. At an early date, the readily available agricultural land was fully used and now the pres sure Oh this resource limits the majority of farm families to the earnings from quite inadequate small farms. Industries did not afford sufficient alternate employment opportunities. The low income of the farming group is shared with the nonfarm group serving them, so that the purchasing power of all groups, is low. The unfilled needs of these people are tremendous and a great market for consumer goods, houses, furniture, clothing, etc., will come with the full efficient employment of the people. The future opportunities for work are found in part in the proposed development of industry in the Valley. The abundant natural resources, the undeveloped power possibilities, the labor supply and the potential market are considered in planning for a great expansion in basic manufacturing industry and in service industries. The great need to protect the soil from erosion, to reforest land not suited for continued production of crops, to control fioods, and to develop recreational facilities offer further assurance of necessary employment. All educational forces would he enlisted to assist the people of the Valley in making the best use of the resources of the area. The report is confined to proposals of needed measures for full use of resources and does not concern itself with the choice of particular agencies or means for their accomplishment. The plan presented is designed ultimately to effect a combination of labor, land resources, capital, and power, which will give the people of the region full employment, utilize the resources restore and maintain the fertility of the land, permit the region to make its full, rich contribution to the national wealth, and support the people at a level of living which will maintain a healthy and happy citizenry. Book County Arkansas Classic Reprint

Download or read book County Arkansas Classic Reprint written by J. F. Holden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from County Arkansas The great trouble, in a money-making way, with most of the American farmers, is, that they do not place0 a roper estimate upon the small things. Branch of industry has suffered more from this neglect than farming. In the older countries of the world where the population is dense and land for farming scarce, necessarily the little things must be studied and utilized in the economics of the farm. In China and Japan the farms consist of only a fraction of an acre and the man in Germany who cultivates ten acres is quite an important personage. In some of the older states of t is country farming is conducted upon a few acres, but in this great unlimited outdoors of the Central and Southwest the trick has not yet been learned to fence in only a few acres and to cultivate. These in a manner to yield large results. Too much energy is still being wasted-in the effort to get one hundred bushels of corn from five acres, when an acre and a half should produce the same quantity. Only a few years ago in South Missouri and Northwest Arkansas, the farmer thought he had performed his full duty when he planted his fields in corn, wheat and oats. If he had his crop planted in good time and the season was favorable, he sometimes came out ahead. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It was pretty hard to tell, just then, who did own it and it has been somewhat of a conundrum ever since. There was no one present to speak for the Dutch bond holders, though they had a sympathetic listener, whose abused mind wandered away to the foggy shores of Holland, and was lost in visions of bottles and bar rels and bung-holes. Book The Long Shadow of Little Rock

Download or read book The Long Shadow of Little Rock written by Daisy Bates and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2007-02-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At an event honoring Daisy Bates as 1990’s Distinguished Citizen then-governor Bill Clinton called her "the most distinguished Arkansas citizen of all time." Her classic account of the 1957 Little Rock School Crisis, The Long Shadow of Little Rock, couldn't be found on most bookstore shelves in 1962 and was banned throughout the South. In 1988, after the University of Arkansas Press reprinted it, it won an American Book Award. On September 3, 1957, Gov. Orval Faubus called out the National Guard to surround all-white Central High School and prevent the entry of nine black students, challenging the Supreme Court's 1954 order to integrate all public schools. On September 25, Daisy Bates, an official of the NAACP in Arkansas, led the nine children into the school with the help of federal troops sent by President Eisenhower–the first time in eighty-one years that a president had dispatched troops to the South to protect the constitutional rights of black Americans. This new edition of Bates's own story about these historic events is being issued to coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of the Little Rock School crisis in 2007.
