Book Strategies to Improve Bali Cattle in Eastern Indonesia

Download or read book Strategies to Improve Bali Cattle in Eastern Indonesia written by D. R. Lindsay and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The demand for beef continues to grow in response to increases in population and income. Satisfying this demand has been achieved by government sponsored expansion of the beef sector in some regions, importation of 'boxed' beef and live cattle, and increases in the off-take rate from established cattle populations. Such off-take from the Bali cattle heard in the Eastern Islands has led to speculation of a decline in numbers and loss of genetic merit of this important breed. Agaist this background ACIAR and CRIAS supported a project to provide a sound basis for government initiatives that support the Bali Cattle herd and the farmers who own and manage these cattle. The project considered the status of past and current breeding strategies and herd improvement programs, whether some of the concerns about herd size and quality are warranted, what breeding strategies would be best suited to the Eastern Islands, and what traits would be given highest priority in a breeding program. The project culminated in a workshop that brought together Indonesian and Australian expertise on Bali cattle production and herd improvement. These proceedings report input to that workshop and recommended strategies for the future development of the Bali cattle herd in eastern Indonesia.

Book Sustainability analysis of beef production with Bali cattle in smallholder farms on Ceram Island Indonesia

Download or read book Sustainability analysis of beef production with Bali cattle in smallholder farms on Ceram Island Indonesia written by Faradilla Attamimi and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2011-03-16 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though being a region composed by islands and rich in water resources, beef production gains in importance on Ceram Island, Indonesia. A beef boom triggered the over-proportional selling of productive animals, threatening the sustainability of beef production in two farmer groups in the island, namely indigenous farmers who live as crop farmers, livestock keepers and fishermen and transmigrant farmers who came from other provinces in Indonesia, settled on the Island and live as food crop farmers, mainly producing rice and later becoming cattle keepers. The aim of the study was to contribute to the knowledge base needed for the design of sustainable beef production systems by analysing the sustainability of farms on Ceram Island, Indonesia. The Island was chosen by the provincial government as a centre of agricultural production in Maluku Province. The general hypothesis of this study was: farm resources and productive and reproductive performance of beef production in the mixed farming systems on Ceram Island differ according to the migratory status of farmers, leading to different economic efficiencies. Therefore, different strategies and interventions are needed to improve the systems. The study focused on districts with agriculture as the main economic activity, namely West Ceram and Kairatu districts in the west, and Bula district in the east. The study was carried out in three stages. The preliminary study was done to identify the production patterns and key features for further study planning in a diagnostic survey (33 households and 154 cattle) between June and September 2008. A comprehensive data collection was realised in the second stage, covering the areas of cattle distribution and performance, forage availability and quality, farm characteristics, production pattern, household socio-economic conditions and indicators used for sustainability analysis (88 households and 325 cattle). A closing data collection was performed with farmers in October 2010 in order to present, discuss and re-rank indicators in the sustainability analysis. The data was collected using household interviews, key person interviews, a progeny history questionnaire, systematic observation, cattle measurements, forage sampling and laboratory analysis, time line history of both farms and external condition, seasonal calendar for crops and cattle, internal bio-resource flow, ranking and scoring of the role and function of households member, as well as for cattle, crops and contribution of them for the household, and focus group discussion. After performing descriptive statistics, analytical analysis included general linear models and cluster analysis. IMPACT software was employed for annual economic balances, the households’ food security status and labour allocation. Results of the study showed that performance of Bali cattle in farms managed by indigenous versus transmigrant farmers were not significantly different in terms of bull age at first mating, cow age at first calving, weaning age, calving interval and mortalities. The body weights showed a non-significant tendency towards heavier cattle in transmigrant farms. The overall productive performance of Bali cattle on Ceram Island was comparable with previous studies conducted in other parts of Indonesia and in other countries such as Malaysia, Australia and the Philippine. Forage production in the rainy season was 6.9 ton dry matter per ha, with 4 to 6% crude protein, 34 to 38% crude fiber, and 13.1 MJ per ton dry matter, which is relatively low compared to the western part of Indonesia and other islands in the Pacific like Samoa.

Book Managing Sustainable Practice Changes in a Low Input Bali Cattle Production System in West Sumbawa

Download or read book Managing Sustainable Practice Changes in a Low Input Bali Cattle Production System in West Sumbawa written by Nurul Hilmiati and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bali cattle enterprise in Eastern Indonesia is characterized by low productivity and small holder farming system that rely heavily on natural resource for feed. Although innovations of improved forage and feeding management are available, Sumbawanese farmers still practice extensive traditional feeding system. This paper discusses approach and strategies applied to manage change on farmers' practices in a low input cattle production system aiming for higher productivity and profitability. An action research study was conducted in Sumbawa between 2010-2014 to assess contribution of approaches, methods and strategies towards farmers' practice changes. The research was entwined in an adaptive research project entitled “improving forage tree legume management for cattle fattening in Eastern Indonesia”. The study has shown that a combination of methods and strategies developed from the results of a community based situation analysis was effective to manage farmers towards practice changes. These methods included rising self awareness, adaptive trial, increasing knowledge and skills and providing access to inputs. The practice changes can be seen by farmers started implementing the introduced innovations including planting improved feed Leucaena sp. and improved cattle management. These changed practices subsequently have improved the cattle productivity which has provided increased return for farmers. This paper concludes that more intensive stakeholder participation in planning processes resulted in a greater sense of ownership over achievements, followed by faster, more sustainable and self-motivated practice change. Sustainable practice change is likely to lead to higher agricultural productivity, in turn enhancing farmers' livelihoods.

Book Investigating the Shaping and Embedding of Supplementation Technology

Download or read book Investigating the Shaping and Embedding of Supplementation Technology written by J.A. Jermias and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The low productivity of Bali cattle in West Timor has led to the decrease of the popularity of this area as one of the largest beef sources in Indonesia. Two determining factors responsible for the low productivity are the high mortality rate of Bali calf as a result of the birth season mostly falling in the dry season and the extensive cattle rearing system and the low growth rate of survival calves due to the suffer from under-nutrition in their earlier life. To address the high mortality rate, a technology called supplementation technology (ST) has been created from a series of studies that were conducted from 1998 to 2005 with participatory approach in some steps. The ST is a combination of two activities namely separating the calves from the cows during the day when the cows are grazing on the native pastures and uniting them in the evening and providing a supplement containing 18.6% crude protein to the calves during the separation. In order to prepare the ST to be disseminated to farmers, a long term research consisting of two phases has been conducted in four Districts in West Timor using a participatory approach that involved farmers and two other actors. The first phase, 2007-7008, was aimed to prove the efficacy of the ST and the second phase, 2009-2010, was aimed to facilitate a commercial adoption to the ST. The results of the 2007-2010 research showed that ST has provided advantages both technically and economically, it obtained good perception from participating farmers, and the establishment of a ST production mechanism. However, after the research was concluded, it was found that the ST was not sustainable adopted and only one farmer applied the ST temporarily. Therefore, this research aims to gain knowledge on why the ST was not used in practices by West Timor farmers on Bali cattle husbandry by unravelling factors that influence the nonsustainable adoption both at and above farmer level. The fieldwork of this research was conducted in two districts of the four districts of 2007-2010 research namely Kupang District and Timor Tengah Selatan (TTS) District. Data was obtained through observation, interviews, focus group discussions, and related documents. The collected data has been highlighted in the form of a time line of the development of ST processes and continued by means of an analysis using the broader dimensions of participation and innovation system failure framework. This research concludes that non sustainable adoption of ST is influenced by less participation aspect in a broader dimension that influences sense of need and sense of belonging of the stakeholders and the failure of Bali cattle husbandry system in supporting the ST from the system of institutions, interactions, and capacity and capability aspects.
