Book Agriculture and Industry in Brazil

Download or read book Agriculture and Industry in Brazil written by Albert Fishlow and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture and Industry in Brazil is a study of the economics of Brazilian agriculture and industry, with a special focus on the importance of innovation to productivity growth. Albert Fishlow and José Eustáquio Ribeiro Vieira Filho examine technological change in Brazil, highlighting the role of public policy in building institutions and creating an innovation-oriented environment. Fishlow and Vieira Filho tackle the theme of innovation from various angles. They contrast the relationship between state involvement and the private sector in key parts of the Brazilian economy and compare agricultural expansion with growth in the oil and aviation sectors. Fishlow and Vieira Filho argue that modern agriculture is a knowledge-intensive industry and its success in Brazil stems from public institution building. They demonstrate how research has played a key role in productivity growth, showing how prudent innovation policies can leverage knowledge not only within a particular company but also across whole sectors of the economy. The book discusses whether and how Brazil can serve as a model for other middle-income countries eager to achieve higher growth and a more egalitarian distribution of income. An important contribution to comparative, international, and development economics, Agriculture and Industry in Brazil shows how the public success in agriculture became a prototype for advance elsewhere.

Book Policy Technology and Efficiency of Brazilian Agriculture

Download or read book Policy Technology and Efficiency of Brazilian Agriculture written by United States Department of Agriculture and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Brazilian agricultural sector has been transformed from a traditional system of production with low use of modern technologies to a world agricultural leader. That transformation occurred as the country moved away from import-substitution policies-which nurtured domestic industrial development at the expense of agriculture-toward market-oriented policy reforms. These reforms included openness to foreign trade and foreign investment and the use of new technologies, which led to a new growth pattern. To evaluate that transformation, the authors use agricultural censuses spanning 1985-2006 to characterize Brazilian total factor productivity growth, decomposing that growth into technical and efficiency changes. This report presents the findings of a study that focuses on the effect of Brazil's science and technology investments and other public policies on farm production. The findings indicate that agricultural research benefits have been most rapidly adopted by the most efficient farms, widening the productivity gap between these farms and average farms. That gap, however, has been narrowed through other public policies, such as rural credit and infrastructure investments, that favor average producers.

Book Technological Clusters in Brazilian Agriculture

Download or read book Technological Clusters in Brazilian Agriculture written by José Eustáquio Ribeiro Vieira Filho and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study aims to analyze the evolution of Brazilian agricultural production from the 1960s to now. We will summarize some of the main findings from the historical view of Brazilian agriculture development. The arguments should rest here on how technical change and the national system of innovations have built an institutional environment to boost the agricultural sector, particularly in the past few decades. It is not easy to describe the path of Brazilian agricultural development, but organizing some important historical facts can help creating a full picture. The future challenge is to include marginalized farmers into the technology revolution. From the standpoint of public policy-making, the internal diversity of farming therefore requires specific actions to promote production and reallocate resources to the different segments and regions. There needs to be a clear policy for increasing technology absorption capacity, which entails making progress in rural extension outreach and education.

Book The Economics and Organization of Brazilian Agriculture

Download or read book The Economics and Organization of Brazilian Agriculture written by Fabio Chaddad and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2015-09-11 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Economics and Organization of Brazilian Agriculture: Recent Evolution and Productivity Gains presents insights on Brazilian agriculture and its impressive gains in productivity and international competitiveness, also providing insightful examples for global policymakers. In Brazil, as in many countries, many economists and policymakers believe that agriculture is a traditional, low-tech sector that crowds out the development of other economic sectors and the country. This book shows that this anti-agriculture bias is ill-informed, and with population growth, rising incomes, urbanization and diet changes – especially in developing countries like China and India – on the rise, the demand for food is expected to double in the next 40 years. Brazil has the natural resources, technology and management systems in place to benefit from this expected growth in food consumption and trade. Through real-world examples, the book shows how other low-latitude countries with tropical climate and soils like Brazil – especially in sub-Saharan Africa – can benefit from the agricultural technology, production, and management systems developed in Brazil. Case studies in each of three key categories, including technology, resource management, and effective government programs provide valuable insights into effective decision-making to maximize the effect of each. Provides important and practical insights into achievable agricultural options via case studies Addresses the use of natural resources, technological advances, and management systems to create viable, adaptive economic growth Applies lessons learned in Brazil to improving both economic and ecological resource-sustainable agriculture for other regions and countries

Book Agricultural Productivity Among Brazilian Regions 1970 1995

Download or read book Agricultural Productivity Among Brazilian Regions 1970 1995 written by Emerson Marinho and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article analyzes total productivity, technical efficiency and technological change of agricultural GDP of Brazilian regions in the period 1970-1995, using Malmquist total productivity index and the model of sthocastic metaproduction frontier. The estimated production frontiers were used to calculate production elasticities, potential growth of regional productivity and the variation in the index of total productivity of Malmquist, which is decomposed in the indexes of efficiency change and technological change. Based on the estimated coefficients of the model it was verified that investiment in capital lower banking expenditures (interest and bank rates) and greater participation of public fundings to finance such an activity could contribute to the reduction of technical inefficiencies in agriculture. The estimated potential productivity ratios indicate that the Southeast region is the most productive; moreover these gains were explained more by tecnological variation than technical efficiency variation.

Book Sustainability Challenges of Brazilian Agriculture

Download or read book Sustainability Challenges of Brazilian Agriculture written by Niels Søndergaard and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-24 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With contributions from a wide range of thematic areas, this book provides a diverse perspective on the contemporary environmental challenges of Brazilian agriculture. Assessing existing experiences of governance interventions, implementation of inclusive and sustainable production practices, as well as technical innovations, this edited volume presents the reader with a nuanced perspective on sustainable future pathways for Brazilian agriculture. In many cases, actors within the agricultural sector stand in a key position to address environmental concerns, which often has generated important breakthroughs and improvement of production practices. Drawing on contributions from authors within a variety of fields, this contribution presents a trans-disciplinary perspective on the problems and pathways through which multi-level interventions can lead to sustainable solutions within the Brazilian agricultural and livestock sector. This book hereby constitutes an informed and timely contribution to the important debates about Brazil’s potential role in confronting environmental problems. More broadly, this volume also sheds light on the process of agricultural transitions in the Global South, and how food security concerns may be reconciled with sustainable production.

Book Productivity Growth in Agriculture

Download or read book Productivity Growth in Agriculture written by Keith Owen Fuglie and published by CABI. This book was released on 2012 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is written primarily for agricultural economists doing research on productivity. It includes discussions of the theoretical underpinnings of productivity measurement as well as the many practical considerations that go into translating this theory into actual measures of aggregated outputs and inputs. The unifying concept of agricultural productivity used across the chapters of this volume is aggregate total factor productivity (TFP) of the sector. The volume also contains detailed analysis of the underlying causes of agricultural productivity growth. Part I (chapters 2-6) examines agricultural productivity in high-income and transition countries. Part II (chapters 7-11) examines agricultural productivity growth and its driving forces in five important agricultural producers in Asia and Latin America. Part III (chapters 12-14) focuses on measuring and identifying constraints to agricultural productivity growth in sub-Saharan Africa. Part IV (chapters 15-16) gives a global perspective on agricultural productivity.

Book Agricultural Productivity and Structural Transformation

Download or read book Agricultural Productivity and Structural Transformation written by Paula Bustos and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study the effects of the adoption of new agricultural technologies on structural transformation. To guide empirical work, we present a simple model where the effect of agricultural productivity on industrial development depends on the factor bias of technical change. We test the predictions of the model by studying the introduction of genetically engineered soybean seeds in Brazil, which had heterogeneous effects on agricultural productivity across areas with different soil and weather characteristics. We find that technical change in soy production was strongly labor saving and led to industrial growth, as predicted by the model.

Book Technological Change and Output Bias in the Brazilian Agriculture from 1970 to 1985

Download or read book Technological Change and Output Bias in the Brazilian Agriculture from 1970 to 1985 written by Roberto S. Dias and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyses the impact of technological change on Brazilian agricultural output and input mix from 1970 to 1985. We utilize an econometric model that considers two activities (vegetal and animal activities) and three inputs (labor, land and capital. It was observed in all period(1970 to 1985 an output bias in direction to vegetal production against animal production. It caused a bias in direction on labor and capital utilization and saving land. This paper also shows different behaviors in small periods, as 1970/75, 1975/80 and 1980/85.
