This book was released on with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karnataka is one of the nine major Bt cotton growing states in the country. The Bt cotton seed production focussed on the socio-economic characteristics of contract farmers, cost and return, efficiency of resource use and problems faced by the farmers in Bt cotton seed production under different companies. Five companies having highest area under Bt cotton seed production were selected for study. The present study was conducted with primary data collected entirely based on a multistage random sampling technique from 200 Bt cotton seed production growers who have contracted with the different seed companies. The study pertained to the agricultural year 2012-13. The total cost of Bt cotton seed production varied from one company contract farmers to other company contract farmers. The total cost was found to be higher (Rs.96829) in case of JK seeds company contract farmers followed by the farmers who have contracted with Monsanto seeds company (Rs.95797). While, the net returns obtained from Bt cotton seed production was found to be higher in case of Monsanto seeds company contract farmers (Rs.46387) followed by Kaveri seeds company contract farmers (Rs.33076). The Cobb-Douglas production function revealed that the farmers who have contracted with different seed companies, the use of seed was found to be optimum across all company contract farmers. Whereas, fertilizer resource was over utilized by farmers who have contracted with various companies. Non availability of trained labour and prevalence of high wage rate were the major constraints in case of production, where as poor technical assistance and low contract price were the contractual problems. The other problems regarding plant protection, high incidence of diseases was the major constraint in Bt cotton seed production and in case of marketing, high price of parents of Bt cotton seeds and low price of the seeds offered by the agencies were the major ones. Therefore the Bt cotton seed production technology had positive impact on Socio- economic status of farmers by increase in yield and reducing cost on inputs thereby increase in income and also standard of living.

Download or read book Undeserved Death A Study on Suicide of Farmers in Andhra Pradesh 2000 2005 written by K.S. Bhat and published by Allied Publishers. This book was released on 2006-07-12 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The multi-dimensional nature of farmers' distress in several states of India is pushing farmers to commit suicides. The deficiencies in institutional factors — those related to credit, insurance, supply of inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, pesticides and marketing —are becoming serious. Social factors such as the non-empowerment of elected local bodies, the exploitative attitude of moneylenders and merchants, and gender discrimination are aggravating the deprivation of small and marginal farmers and landless agricultural labourers. Compounding the crumbling institutional and social support systems are the other factors such as disconnection between research, education and extension organizations and rural realities, land degradation, unsustainable exploitation of groundwater and consecutive droughts. All these resulted in the agrarian crisis, more particularly in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamilnadu, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Gujarat and Punjab. Analyzing some of these factors pertaining to agrarian crisis and farmer's suicides, a pilot study and other articles in this book analytically bring out the prevailing situation in Andhra Pradesh. A few articles in the book also highlight the situation in Karnataka, Maharashtra and Punjab. Some of the implications discussed by the academicians, activists, researchers and others will definitely help the policy makers in their future programme to safeguard and strengthen the livelihood security of the families of resource-poor small and marginal farmers. The book will be of immense use both for the scholars and the government authorities.

Download or read book Food Energy and Water Nexus written by Chittaranjan Ray and published by Springer. This book was released on 2022-01-18 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, major issues surrounding importance of water and energy for food security in the United States and India are described representing two extremes in yield, irrigation efficiency, and automation. The farming systems in these two countries face different risks in terms of climatic shifts and systems’ resiliency to handle the shocks. One may have comparative advantage over the other, but both are susceptible. Innovations in irrigation for food and fuel production, improvements in nitrogen and water use efficiency, and rural sociological issues are discussed here. We also look into some of the unintended consequences of high productivity agriculture in terms of surface and ground water quality and impacts on ecosystem services. Finally, we present ways to move forward to meet the food demands in the next half-century in both countries. As the current world population of 7 billion is expected to reach or exceed 10 billion in the next 40 years, there will be significant additional demand for food. A rising middle class and its preference for a meat-based diet also increases the demand for animal feed. This additional food and feed production needs special considerations in water and energy management besides the development of appropriate crop hybrids to withstand future climatic shifts and other environmental factors. A resilient agricultural landscapes will also be needed to withstand climatic fluctuations, disease pressures, etc. While the upper and many middle income countries have made significant improvements in crop yield due to pressurized irrigation and automation in farming systems, the lower income countries are struggling with yield enhancements due to such limitations. The rise in population is expected to be more in Sub-Sharan Africa and Middle East (Low to middle-income countries) where the crop yields are expected to be low.
