Book More Sex is Safer Sex

Download or read book More Sex is Safer Sex written by Steven E. Landsburg and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-09-04 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With his long-running 'Everyday Economics' column in Slate and his popular book, The Armchair Economist, Steven Landsburg has been leading the pack of economists who are transforming their science from a drab meditation on graphs and charts into a fascinating window on human nature. Now he's back and more provocative than ever with surprises on virtually every page. In More Sex is Safer Sex, Professor Landsburg offers readers a series of stimulating discussions that all flow from one unsettling fact. Combining the rational decisions of each of us often produces an irrational result for all of us. Avoiding casual sex can actually encourage the spread of diseases. To solve population pressures, we need more people. In his tantalizing, entertaining narrative, Landsburg guides us through these shocking notions by the light of compelling logic and evidence and makes suggestions along the way: Why not charge juries if a convicted felon is exonerated? Why not let firemen keep the property they rescue? As entertaining as it is inflammatory, More Sex is Safer Sexwill make readers think about their decisions in unforgettable ways -- and spark debate over much that we all take for granted.

Book Safer sex Decision Making

Download or read book Safer sex Decision Making written by Venerable Bede Agocha and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A recent model of safer-sex decision making (Agocha & Cooper, 1999) suggests that although rational, cognitive factors directly predict an individual's perceived risk of having sex and intention to take precautions (e.g., use condoms), motivational factors (e.g., desirability of an attractive partner) directly and indirectly (by downwardly biasing risk perceptions) undermine these intentions. This model also suggests that men may be more susceptible than women to such bias. The present research extended this earlier work by investigating how the social-cognitive processes underlying use of risk-relevant information are disrupted by the desire to have sex with an attractive partner, and whether these effects account for variations in sexual risk-taking across individuals and gender groups. To test the hypotheses, two experiments were conducted in which 495 (men and women) participants aged 18-24 completed computer-administered questionnaires after viewing a potential partner's photograph and biographic information. In Study 1, the target's photograph was presented first, then participants chose specific information they wished to learn about the target. In Study 2, after the photograph, the remaining material was presented in randomized order. Thus, the influence of sexual motivation was examined on the nature and degree of processing of self-selected information (Study 1), and on a random-ordered information set (Study 2). Consistent with the prior research, results suggest that the motivation to have sex with a highly desirable partner reduces safer-sex intentions (mainly by lowering perceived risk), especially among men. Structural equation modeling further showed that selective attention, superficial encoding, biased recall, and strategic use of partner characteristics/information are probable mediators of this influence. Despite limitations of experimental analogs of cognition, this research highlights the possibility that identifying specific information processes that are susceptible to motivated cognitive biases may lead to the development of more effective HIV/AIDS prevention efforts, and improved behavioral decision making.

Download or read book Sexually Transmitted Infections written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by . This book was released on 2021-12-24 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One in five people in the United States had a sexually transmitted infection (STI) on any given day in 2018, totaling nearly 68 million estimated infections. STIs are often asymptomatic (especially in women) and are therefore often undiagnosed and unreported. Untreated STIs can have severe health consequences, including chronic pelvic pain, infertility, miscarriage or newborn death, and increased risk of HIV infection, genital and oral cancers, neurological and rheumatological effects. In light of this, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, through the National Association of County and City Health Officials, commissioned the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene a committee to examine the prevention and control of sexually transmitted infections in the United States and provide recommendations for action. In 1997, the Institute of Medicine released a report, The Hidden Epidemic: Confronting Sexually Transmitted Diseases. Although significant scientific advances have been made since that time, many of the problems and barriers described in that report persist today; STIs remain an underfunded and comparatively neglected field of public health practice and research. The committee reviewed the current state of STIs in the United States, and the resulting report, Sexually Transmitted Infections: Advancing a Sexual Health Paradigm, provides advice on future public health programs, policy, and research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both research and consultations over the last decades have identified sexuality-related communication as an issue that requires urgent attention. While clients would like their health-care providers to discuss sexual health concerns, health workers lack the necessary training and knowledge to feel comfortable addressing such issues. This guideline provides health policy-makers and decision-makers in health professional training institutions with advice on the rationale for health-care providers' use of counselling skills to address sexual health concerns in a primary health care setting.
