Book excerpt: To mark the 2000 Annual Conference of the Society of Public Teachers of Law,the Society has organised a distinguished team of contributors to write a set of reflective and critical essays on the future of law in the United Kingdom, considering how it will or should develop over a wide range of areas. The essays are concerned not only with all the main branches of the law but also with socio-legal studies, legal education and legal practice. In most of these areas the essays are written by two contributors so that the dialogue between them adds perception to their forecasts, taking account of past experience of developing the law via judicial activism or statutory reform processes and also of the European dimension. This reflection upon the possible future milestones of UK law will provide stimulating and illuminating reading for all lawyers, whether academics or practitioners. The sixth edition has been revised to cover recent changes to UK practice and standards in health, safety, employment and environmental legislation. It also incorporates EU directives and references to harmonised and international standards. Reflecting the importance of the roles of directors and managers in health and safety, new chapters cover the management of risk, emphasising the need for a sound organisational structure to achieve effective risk management. Developments in the behavioural approach to risk management and current thinking on the development of an international standard on safety management are also covered. Quality of the environment is rapidly becoming part of the safety manager’s responsibilities both in the workplace and in the context of global pollution. A completely new part consisting of five chapters has been added dealing solely with environmental issues (including ISO 14001). The increasingly important role of ergonomics in health and safety is reflected in a new chapter on Applied Ergonomics, dealing with the subject pragmatically, that will allow the manager and practitioner to design process and operations that are within the limits of the human body. The effects of stress, an emerging concern in health and safety, are covered in various chapters.

Book Lubricant Blending and Quality Assurance

Download or read book Lubricant Blending and Quality Assurance written by R. David Whitby and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people, including those involved in the manufacturing, marketing and selling of lubricants, believe that blending lubricants is simply a matter of putting one or more base oils and several additives into a tank of some kind and stirring them around to mix them. Blending lubricants that meet customers’ demands requires much more than this. The correct ingredients of the right quality need to be used in precisely controlled quantities. The ingredients need to be tested prior to blending and the finished products need to be tested following blending. The ingredients need to be stored and mixed under carefully controlled conditions. The finished lubricants need to be stored and packaged carefully and then delivered to customers correctly. This book discusses all of these issues, describes the different types of equipment used to blend lubricants, provides guidance on how best to use this equipment, and offers tips and techniques to help to avoid problems. It focuses on liquid lubricants. Greases are not discussed, as their manufacture involves very different manufacturing procedures compared with those concerned with liquid lubricants. The book starts with descriptions and discussion of the properties and characteristics of the main types of mineral and synthetic base oils, as well as the properties and characteristics of the main types of additives that are used in lubricant formulations. Criteria and methodologies used to design both new and upgraded blending plants are covered next. The types and operation of the equipment used in lubricant blending plants are described and discussed, together with a chapter on how to avoid problems before, during, and after blending. Testing and analysis of base oils, additives, and blended lubricants are covered in two separate chapters. Procedures for quality control and quality management in lubricant blending plants are also discussed in two separate chapters. Types of packages for lubricants are reviewed, together with methods for filling packages and methods for transporting lubricants in bulk. The storage of lubricants and supply chain management is also covered in depth.
