Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luke’s gospel contains a number of passages about compassion. One of the most beloved of these is commonly known as the parable of the Prodigal Son. In The Prodigal Father, Angelo Scarano focuses on the distinctive role of the father in the parable, the example he provides of being transformed by a compassionate heart, and the joy in celebrating the return of what was loved and thought to be lost. Scarano suggests that this remarkable parable has two climaxes—the banquet for the younger son, and the conversation between the father and the elder son—and that it is in this second climax where the real intention of the evangelist is revealed. Scarano urges readers to accept God’s “compassionate heart,” to allow God’s Spirit to transform us and enable us to live like the prodigal father, opening our hearts to the weak and the strong, the broken and the bitter. Scarano’s insightful work will be welcomed by preachers, teachers, and anyone engaged in prayer with or reflection upon the gospels.

Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling author of The Prodigal Prophet uncovers the essential message of Jesus, locked inside his most familiar parable. Newsweek called renowned minister Timothy Keller "a C.S. Lewis for the twenty-first century" in a feature on his first book, The Reason for God. In that book, he offered a rational explanation of why we should believe in God. Now, in The Prodigal God, Keller takes his trademark intellectual approach to understanding Christianity and uses the parable of the prodigal son to reveal an unexpected message of hope and salvation. Within that parable Jesus reveals God's prodigal grace toward both the irreligious and the moralistic. This book will challenge both the devout and skeptics to see Christianity in a whole new way.

Book Prodigal Father Wayward Son

Download or read book Prodigal Father Wayward Son written by Sam Keen and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the long awaited sequel to Fire in the Belly father and son authors Sam Keen and Gifford Keen write the next chapter of one of the defining books of the men's movement. Filled with personal stories of their own struggles and breakthroughs Prodigal Father, Wayward Son is a warm and engaging book on masculinity, and a compelling and dynamic invitation for readers to recall the memories that define their own fatherandson relationships.A central theme of the men's movement was the alienation between sons and fathers, but after having explored this theme, the movement stalled. Similar to the memoirs of Pat Conroy and Andre Dubus III about their fathers, Prodigal Father, Wayward Son points to the next chapter in that story the reconciliation of fathers and sons. Sam and Gifford Keen provide guidance and inspiration to those looking for positive role models and teach new ways to move beyond old wounds. They offer proven and concrete methods to overcome long standing enmities and misunderstanding and become reconciled through a process of telling our longheld, but often unexamined, myths and stories. With Prodigal Father, Wayward Son Sam Keen delivers the crowing achievement of his remarkable literary career and a moving account of repentance, forgiveness and reconciliation that sets it apart from any other books in this genre.

Book Prodigal Father Pagan Son

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the USA Book News National Book Award for Best Nonfiction True Crime and Best Memoir/Autobiography By the time he was thirteen, he already had attended thirteen funerals. Abandoned by his mother, and with his father, "Mangy" Menginie—president of the Pagans Motorcycle Club, Philadelphia chapter—in jail, Anthony "LT" Menginie is raised inside the Pagans and inducted into a life of sex, violence, drugs, and organized crime. In Mangy's absence, LT finds a father figure in the Saint, a club member who helps teach him the difference between the club members you respect...and those you fear. The author recounts the power struggles that occur when Mangy is released from jail and tries to resume his role as father and president. Soon all hell breaks loose when Mangy betrays the club by going over to the rival Hells Angels, helping to touch off the "Biker Wars" in Philadelphia. The chapter's new president grooms LT to one day confront his father for his treachery. Faced with an impossible decision, LT has to decide where his loyalties lie. Prodigal Father, Pagan Son is a voyeuristic glimpse into the shocking and hypnotic underworld of notorious "one-percenter" biker clubs, hit men, drug dealers, and the other individuals who operate under no other rules than the "club code." But more than this, Menginie's story is the gritty and powerful true tale of surviving amid personal trials and tragedies, and of one man's determination to escape to a better life.

Book The Return of the Prodigal Son

Download or read book The Return of the Prodigal Son written by Henri J. M. Nouwen and published by Image. This book was released on 2013-11-20 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With over a million copies sold, this classic work is essential reading for all who ask, “Where has my struggle led me?” A chance encounter with a reproduction of Rembrandt’s The Return of the Prodigal Son catapulted Henri Nouwen on an unforgettable spiritual adventure. Here he shares the deeply personal and resonant meditation that led him to discover the place within where God has chosen to dwell. As Nouwen reflects on Rembrandt’s painting in light of his own life journey, he evokes a powerful drama of the classic parable in a rich, captivating way that is sure to reverberate in the hearts of readers. Nouwen probes the several movements of the parable: the younger son’s return, the father’s restoration of sonship, the elder son’s resentfulness, and the father’s compassion. The themes of homecoming, affirmation, and reconciliation will be newly discovered by all who have known loneliness, dejection, jealousy, or anger. The challenge to love as God loves, and to be loved as God’s beloved, will be seen as the ultimate revelation of the parable known to Christians throughout time, and is here represented with a vigor and power fresh for our times.

Book A Prodigal Saint

Download or read book A Prodigal Saint written by Nadieszda Kizenko and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rarely are we privileged to see the making of a saint, but it is just what this book gives us for John of Kronstadt (1829&–1908), a major figure in the religious life of Late Imperial Russia. So popular was Father John during his years of ministry that Kronstadt became a pilgrimage site replete with peddlers selling souvenir photographs, postcards, and commemorative mugs. A Prodigal Saint follows Father John&’s development from activist priest to venerated spiritual leader and, after his death, to his elevation to sainthood in 1990. We see both the inner life of an aspiring saint and the symbiotic relationship between a living icon and his followers. Father John represented a fundamentally new type of religious behavior and a new standard of sanctity in Late Imperial Russia. He ministered to the poor of Kronstadt, creating shelters and employment programs and participating in the temperance movement. In the process he acquired a reputation for prayerful intercession that soon spread beyond Kronstadt. When he was asked to minister to the dying Alexander III in 1894, his fame became international as he attracted correspondents from the United States and Europe. In his later years he allied himself increasingly with the radical right, which has had momentous implications for the Russian Orthodox Church in the twentieth century. Kizenko draws upon rich and virtually unknown documents from the Russian archives, including Father John&’s diaries, thousands of letters he received from his followers, and the police reports on the sect that formed around him. John&’s diaries are a truly unique source, for they document the making of a modern saint: his struggles with doubt, his ascetic practices, and his growing realization that others saw him as a saint. Kizenko explores the extent to which Father John collaborated in the formation of his own cult and how he himself was influenced by the expectations and desires of his audience. In the final chapter she follows Father John&’s posthumous reputation (and the struggles over how to use that reputation) in Russia, the Soviet Union, and throughout the world. A Prodigal Saint is published in collaboration with the Harriman Institute at Columbia University as part of its Studies of the Harriman Institute series. It is a pioneering study that contributes to our understanding of lived religion, saints&’ cults, and modern Russian history.

Book excerpt: "Everybody has a story. Some may seem uneventful, others dramatic, while others are life changing. This story, Marcus' story, is a life changer." - Dale Clapper Fifteen years in the making, The Love of a Father and the Journey of His Prodigal Son is more than a linear recount of life's highs and lows. In his debut memoir, author Marcus Clapper captivates readers with his salvation story, which eventually leads to his spiritual rebirth. Raised by devout Christian parents, Clapper always knew God was present, but never fully understood His presence for himself; only through the experience of his parents. With limited knowledge of God and seeking a life gratifying to himself, Clapper embarked on his own life's path only to become enthralled in addiction, crime, and advertent malfeasances. Blind to the light and hope within himself, Clapper was broken and ashamed believing his mistakes were unforgivable. Fearful, insecure, and depressed, he never believed love, joy, and peace were possible in his life. He was facing a dismal future rife with monotony, addiction, and solitary confinement. Miraculously, he survived this calamitous and murky time in his life where he slit relationships, risked his health and freedom, hurt loved ones, dented lives and livelihoods, and suffered from addiction. For years, he wrestled with, and was tormented by, the belief that he will never be forgiven or given the opportunity to make amends-until he obliged an unlikely request from an unlikely requestor. In The Love of a Father and the Journey of His Prodigal Son, Clapper's life's story is a testament of God's mercy, grace, forgiveness, and freedom-all of which are also extended to you. Regardless of your mistakes, you can begin anew-today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What has become popularly but erroneously known in Christian and Church circles as the parable of the ‘Prodigal son’ is part of a larger revelation Jesus told about three parables of lost—the lost coin, the lost sheep, and the lost son. Contrary to the popular opinion and title given to this parable, the parable is more about a Prodigal father and his attitude towards a wayward younger son and a disgruntled elder son, and nothing at all about a ‘Prodigal’ son. The book culminates in the clear and simple distinction that our Lord Jesus makes between sonship and servanthood in his vineyard parables, contrary to the claim by many that all humans are sons of God through procreation. Are all indeed sons of God? Or is there a distinction between Kingdom-Sons and Kingdom-Servants of God? This book’s approach to both subjects above will leave you amused, instructed, enlightened, stirred up, and challenged, but definitely not bored!
