Book excerpt: This is a story for the Baby Boom generation and for their progeny as well. This is a tale for anyone who has wistfully dreamed of personal fulfillment. For those who contemplate the shedding of the shackles of conformity, of repetitive task completion, of living to satisfy the expectations of others, Michael Campbell is a man well worth meeting. Michael defi nes his own, Castle in Spain, his statement of individual dream fulfillment and he works tirelessly to achieve it. Michaels singular focus becomes a beacon to others. Some raft together with him to his immense benefit while others become steadfast in their attempts to sink him. Capistrano, a club for gentlemen in the heart of Metro Manila, rises to become the premier night spot in a city famous for its ability to gratify the nocturnal, nefarious desires of those who enjoy the embrace of business success. And those, as well, in sequined splendor, whose agenda it is to satisfy those needs, to achieve their own goals. Capistrano is, in microcosm, South East Asia in the late 1980s. At once a bastion of sensual overload, it houses the unholy alliance of those with means and those who trade in their desires. Capistrano will make you laugh out loud, it will make you cry, and, in the process make you think about your own present and what possibilities lie untapped within.

Book Advanced Geostatistics in the Mining Industry

Download or read book Advanced Geostatistics in the Mining Industry written by M. Guarascio and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1976-07-31 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Prof. Hatheron was asked to delineate the history of geostatistics, he objected that such discipline is still too "young" to be treated from a historical point of view. The more and more increasing practical applications requiring newer and newer methodologies would rather suggest the necessity of empha sizing the steps taken and the results obtained up to now. The reason of certain epistemological choices as well as the difficul ties and success in establishing a dialogue with the people most likely to benefit from the results of geostatistics are necessary premises to understand the present status of this discipline. The human bearing of characters of the persons that have introduc ed and studied this science blending theory with economic prac tics is a factor playing a not inconsiderable role in the develop ment of geostatistics. These concepts were the guidelines in organizing the ASI-Geo stat 75. Canada, France and Italy are three different situations in an industrial and academic context, especially in the interac tion between these fields. Yet it was our impression that the time had come to assemble experts, scholars, and other people in terested in geostatistics in order to evaluate its present posi tion on various levels in the different countries and to discuss its future prospects. Prof. Hatheron and Hr. Krige as well as other prominent people were of the same opinion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The letters presented in the book were mainly written between 1955 and 1965. During this period, algebraic geometry went through a remarkable transformation, and Grothendieck and Serre were among central figures in this process. The reader can follow the creation of some of the most important notions of modern mathematics, like sheaf cohomology, schernes, Riemann-Roch type theorems, algebraic fundamental group, motives. The letters also reflect the mathematical and political atmosphere of this period (Bourbaki, Paris, Harvard, Princeton, war in Algeria, etc.) Also included are a few letters written between 1984 and 1987. The letters are supplemented by J.-P. Serre's notes, which give explanations, corrections, and references further results." "The book should be useful to specialists in algebraic geometry, in history of mathematics, and to all mathematicians who want to understand how great mathematics is created."--BOOK JACKET.

Download or read book Our Civilizing Mission written by Nicholas Harrison and published by Contemporary French and Francophone Cultures. This book was released on 2019-05-30 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Civilizing Mission is at once an exploration of colonial education, and a response to current anxieties about the historical and conceptual foundations of the 'humanities'. On the one hand, focusing in detail on the example of Algeria, it treats colonial education as a facet of colonialism, exploring work by 'colonized' writers that attests to the suffering inflicted by colonialism, to the shortcomings of colonial education, and to the often painful mismatch between the world of the colonial school and students' home cultures. On the other hand, it asks what can be learned by treating colonial education not just as an example of colonialism but as a provocative, uncomfortable example of education. Placing writers' literary and personal accounts of their transformative and often alienating experiences of colonial education in historical context, it raises difficult questions - about languages, literatures, ways of thinking, nationalism and national cultures - that need to be reconsidered by anyone teaching subjects such as French, or English, especially through literature.

Book The Photoromance

    Book Details:
  • Author : Paola Bonifazio
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2020-09-22
  • ISBN : 0262539284
  • Pages : 260 pages

Download or read book The Photoromance written by Paola Bonifazio and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating feminist reading of an often scorned medium: the storytelling, cross-platform success, and female fandom of the photoromance. Born in Italy and successfully exported to the rest of the world, photoromances had a readership of millions in the postwar years. By the early 1960s, more than ten million Italians read a photoromance each week. Despite its popularity, the photoromance—a form of graphic storytelling that uses photographs instead of drawings—was widely scorned as a medium, and its largely female audience derided as naive, pathetic, and uneducated. In this provocative book, Paola Bonifazio offers another perspective, making a case for the relevance of the photoromance for both feminism and media culture. She argues that the photoromance pioneered storytelling across platforms, elevated characters and artists into brands, and nurtured a devoted fan base. Moreover, Bonifazio shows that female readers—condescended to by intellectuals, journalists, and politicians of both the left and the right—powered the Italian photoromance industry's success. Bonifazio examines the “convergence culture” of Italian media as photoromance magazines dispersed their content across multiple formats, narrative conventions, editorial and business strategies, and platforms. The plots of photoromances often resembled the storylines of romantic films, and film stars themselves often appeared in photoromances. Bonifazio discusses the media habits of photoromance readers; the use of photoromances to promote political, religious, and social agendas, including a campaign for “birth control in comics”; and long-term fandom. While publishers built lifelong relationships with their readers, the readers built a common identity and culture.

Book Des d dicaces sans th onyme de Palmyre

Download or read book Des d dicaces sans th onyme de Palmyre written by Aleksandra Kubiak-Schneider and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-07-15 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. 203 Palmyrene-Aramaic votive inscriptions from the period between the 2nd and 3rd centuries CE contain three intriguing designations of the gods: “Blessed (be) his name forever”, “Master of the Universe” and “the Merciful”. Previous studies have claimed that the god to whom these inscriptions are addressed is anonymous. Not satisfied with this explanation, Des dédicaces sans théonyme de Palmyre: Béni (soit) son nom pour l’éternité addresses the phenomenon through the lens of thanksgiving and praise, revealing the existence of a contemporary ritual hymn, the origin of the Palmyrene formula “Blessed his name forever”. Who, then, were these gods, the recipients of the dedications? Can we find a match between the formulae and a proper name? This book provides answers to these fascinating questions.

Book Victim Organisations and the Politics of Reparation

Download or read book Victim Organisations and the Politics of Reparation written by Heidy Rombouts and published by Intersentia nv. This book was released on 2004 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reparation for victims of gross and systematic human rights violations is a contemporary issue gaining increased attention in both national and international politics. Post-conflict societies have to face the legacies of the dark past and dealing with a large group of victims is one of them. Transitional justice mechanisms trying to cope with the past should not overlook the issue of reparation. This research demonstrates how reparation for victims of gross and systematic human rights violations differs from reparation for isolated violations. The Rwandan case study unveils the role of victim organisations in and the competition and politicisation of the reparation debate. Although reparation for victims is a crucial element in transitional justice, it becomes clear that the way in which the reparation debate unfolds does not necessarily contribute to the peaceful future of a post-conflict society. This study argues that remedying the process and debate of the search for reparation will lead to an improved and more constructive reparation policy. Heidy Rombouts is a legal and social scientist (1997, Master of Laws; 1999, Master in Social and Political Sciences, Catholic University of Leuven). In 2004 she obtained a PhD degree in Social and Political Sciences at the University of Antwerp for her research on victim organisations and the politics of reparation. For several years she has been conducting research on transitional justice, human rights and post-conflict situations, including extensive field research in South Africa and Rwanda.

Book Ame Qui Survit

Download or read book Ame Qui Survit written by Mary Ross Smith and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2020-12-06 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soul Survivor explores the depths of human emotions, both real and imagined. That any I of us reach adulthood in one piece, emotionally or physically is a miracle of no small proportion. That any of us reach adulthood to contribute back to society and become highly respected in the community is truly a gift of time and place. Soul Survivor is a true story of fortitude, and iron will and looking to the future in the hope that tomorrow will be better than today. Soul Survivor is nothing less than a story of triumph. "Little Mary" Reese spent her childhood living, working and playing in a funeral home. Her mother, Mrs. Mary ("Big Mary") Reese, was well known and respected in the African-American community in Los Angeles through the operation of a prestigious black funeral home. Little Mary's story tells what really happens behind the embalming room doors- the light and dark side of life. Soul Survivor is both humorous and mischievous, and talks of sex, murder, voodoo, preachers and deviate gravediggers. Famous entertainers that passed through Little Mary's life include Redd Foxx, Lou Rawls, Sam Cooke, Billy Preston and Johnny Cochran. Little Mary was born in 1944 in the South, reared in the Southwest and was often disparagingly referred to as "high-yellow." During racial tensions of the '50s and '60s, Little Mary found her hue to be a major issue but not her only problem. Mary's mother caused her to endure life threatening situations due to her drinking and wild ways. Little Mary’s childhood experiences, the mental and physical abuse faced each day, led her to believe that her only true friends were the dead people in the funeral home. Indeed, Little Mary received a BS degree (Be Smart) at an early age. It was the only way she I knew to survive. Little Mary's story is and unlikely but revealing peek into the unexpected and in the end, truly a story of a Soul Survivor.
