Book Production Technology for Cassava and Sweet Potato

Download or read book Production Technology for Cassava and Sweet Potato written by S. P. Varma and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropical tuber crops comprising cassava and sweet potato are the important food crops of man after cereals and provide 6% of the world's dietary energy. Their ability for higher dry matter production even under adverse conditions is well known. Besides contributing significantly as a source of food energy to the weaker sections of the society, these crops have immense industrial value for extraction of starch and production of animal feed. However, there is a marked decline in the production of these crops in recent years. Hence, emphasis has to be given to the scientific management practices of these crops for achieving a higher production potential.

Book Cassava Processing

Download or read book Cassava Processing written by M. R. Grace and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cassava is second only to sweet potatoes as the most important starchy root crop of the tropics. The plant, grown for edible tubers, is a staple food in many tropical countries, an important source of starch, and valuable as a famine relief crop. Industrial use of the crop is expanding. Cassava products are used for bath human and animal consumption. Discussion includes cultivation practices, processing operations for flour and starch, baked tapioca products, starch factories, product utilization, quality control, world trade, and predictions of future industrial developments and uses.

Because of their highly perishable nature, search for efficient and better methods of preservation/processing have been continuing alongside the developments in different arena. This book covers the processing and technological aspects of root and tuber foods, detailing the production and processing of roots and tubers such as taro, cassava, sweet potato, yam and elephant foot yam. Featuring chapters on anatomy, taxonomy and physiology, molecular and biochemical characterization, GAP, GMP, HACCP, Storage techniques, as well as the latest technological interventions in Taro, Cassava, Sweet potato, yam and Elephant foot Yam.

Book Small scale Processing And Storage Of Tropical Root Crops

Download or read book Small scale Processing And Storage Of Tropical Root Crops written by Donald Plucknett and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropical root crops—basic staples for millions of people—are highly perishable, and tremendous losses occur after harvest because of the lack of storage and processing technology. This book is the first to fully describe small-scale processing and storage methods for these root crops, particularly taro, sweet potato, and yams. The authors emphasize methods of handling and preserving the crops that require little in the way of energy or technology, and they discuss traditional methods of storage and processing in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. They also describe small machines suitable for processing and highlight examples of higher-level technology. The book is a milestone in the search for ways to appropriately modernize traditional agriculture and food systems.

Book Nutrition security in Tanzania Orange fleshed sweet potatoes and their contribution to health

Download or read book Nutrition security in Tanzania Orange fleshed sweet potatoes and their contribution to health written by Verena Schmidt and published by Anchor Academic Publishing (aap_verlag). This book was released on 2014-02-01 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particularly in developing countries nearly one billion people are effected by nutrition insecurity in form of under- or malnutrition (FAO 2010, p. 1). Merely by the expression of vitamin A-deficiency an estimate of up to 500,000 children go blind worldwide every year (WHO 2011). This survey deals with a solution approach in form of the contribution made by the orange-fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) and its afford towards nutrition security in rural areas of Mwanza, Tanzania. With help of the partner organization TAHEA, a retrospective population-based study of the nutritional status of rural population of Mwanza was conducted and impressions on food security were reinforced through participant observation. The positive influence of OFSP towards vitamin A status has been confirmed and among others an income-generating function by cultivation and sale of the tuber has been observed. The risk of a possible overdose must also be considered. Thus, the tuber is recommended as a nutritious snack or side dish, but should not be advertised as a considered staple food.
