Book Engineering Ceramics 96 Higher Reliability through Processing

Download or read book Engineering Ceramics 96 Higher Reliability through Processing written by G.N. Babini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the significant progress, which has been made in developing of ceramic materials desired for engineering applications, their mass production is still not on expected level. Among the key factors hindering higher exploitation of these materials the problems in processing were identified. The processing comprises powder production, mixing techniques, forming, and sintering. All of them are equally important and all of them can introduce defects into the material. Besides improvement in processing, the properties of ceramic materials can be considerably improved by the creation of composites. Composites formed at micro or macro level are able to form more flaw-tolerant material. Considerable research activities, working on above mentioned phenomena are in progress at industrial laboratories as well as other research centres. This volume presents the contributions to the Advanced Research Workshop "Engineering Ceramics '96" with 65 participants from 21 countries held on 12th - 15th May 1996 at Smolenice Castle, Slovakia, the conference site of Slovak Academy of Sciences. The book covers research activities on engineering ceramic materials and gives an overview with respect to recent developments.

Book Advanced Ceramics for Dentistry

Download or read book Advanced Ceramics for Dentistry written by Tanja Lube and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ceramic materials are frequently and increasingly used in dentistry. However, they are very brittle, the tensile strength has a large scatter, and their total fracture strain is very low. The strength depends on the loaded volume and on time under load. These properties cause special needs with respect to design, manufacturing tolerances, and handling, in production as well as in application. In ceramics, strength is limited by small flaws that are either caused by the processing of the material or by the machining of surfaces of specimens and components. This chapter introduces the principles of linear elastic fracture mechanics as the basis for understanding brittle fracture, and then presents fracture statistics. These topics are followed by an example for designing with ceramics. In subsequent sections, several other damage mechanisms and their relevance in dental applications will be discussed. The chapter closes with sections that deal with mechanical testing of ceramics and fractography.

Book Ceramics for High Performance Applications III

Download or read book Ceramics for High Performance Applications III written by E.M. Lenoe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sixth Army Materials Technology Conference, IICeramics for High Performance Applications-II I-Reliabilityll , was co-sponsored by the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center and the U. S. Department of Energy, Office of Transportation Programs . The program highlighted all issues relevant to the reliability of ceramics in advanced systems. The conference emphasized programmatic reviews of the major efforts on ceramic gas turbine technology, on an international basis. The conference showed how ceramic design, materials development, materials processing, NDE, and component systems testing are being integrated and iterated in specific engine development programs . Further , the conference promoted inter change among the various technical disciplines working in the advanced turbine and heat engine areas. This volume will join its earlier companions, Ceramics for High Performance A lications (1974), and Ceramics for High Performance Applications-II 1 7 ,in chronicling the rapid progress being made in the applicaton of ceramics to the very demanding service environ ment of gas turbine and piston engines. At the last meeting of this series at Newport, R t, in March 1977, successful high temperature tests of ceramic components in test rigs were described.

Book Advanced Ceramics for Dentistry

Download or read book Advanced Ceramics for Dentistry written by Erik Adolfsson and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mechanical reliability and aesthetic appearance of ceramic dental prostheses are strongly influenced by the presence of defects. When several processes are used during fabrication of ceramic dental prostheses, additional defects are unavoidably introduced in each process step; these are in addition to the ones that already exist in raw materials. To avoid the degeneration of material performance by the accumulated defect population, process optimization is needed to minimize the defects introduced. Standardized mechanical evaluations are usually performed on samples with carefully prepared surfaces in order to minimize the influence from the defects usually induced by fabrication processes. The results from such mechanical evaluation indicate the strength level that is achievable by the material with the given population of bulk defects. In order to avoid a reduction in the performance of the ceramic material by the additional defects normally induced by the fabrication process, it must be understood how these defects are introduced, and solutions must be found to reduce their size and frequency through modifications of the material and processes. The aim of this chapter is to elucidate the sources of defects that are common for ceramic dental prostheses and to determine how to minimize them.
