The older system is characterized by decreasing operations as numbers of small slaughterers, live-poultry stores, buyers of live poultry, terminal market live-poultry receivers, and city dressing plants dwindle. Newer types of firms, such as large processing plants, contract haulers, and contractors, have made tremendous gains at the expense of the older types and through extensive use of contract production. The size of the supply area for most firms has been shrinking. At the same time volume per firm has increased. As farm unit sizes have in creased and the number of small firms has declined, itinerant live buy ing has virtually disappeared. Commercial meat chicken production now greatly exceeds the volume of fowl in most areas. The increasing im portance of contract growing, particularly as firm size increases, has contributed to producing larger lots and enabled better scheduling of plant operations. Since the work of instruction was undertaken by the Government there has been a great improvement in the class of poultry kept by farmers, in the methods practised, and in the production of table-poultry and eggs. There is room for much further improvement, and in this direction the officers of the Poultry Division of the Depart ment of Agriculture are always willing to assist with information and advice. The results will depend, as in all business undertakings, upon the skill, industry, and business capacity of those engaged in it. With good management poultry-keeping will give steady cash returns at an early period after embarking in the enterprise, and no other class of stock will give so much profit on the capital invested as poultry will. Poultry-keeping should go hand-in-hand with dairying, also with fruit growing and bee-culture. In addition to their direct profit, poultry are valuable on the farm in enriching the soil or restoring impoverished soil to a fertile condition; in the orchard they search for and devour insects of all kinds, and not a grub will escape them. Research techniques were employed to measure man and machine input requirements and resultant output-s, an approach that has not been previously employed in analyzing these operations. The authors received valuable suggestions from Fred C. Winter, Professor of Industrial Engineering, Columbia University, and Consulting Engineer to Transportation and Facilities Branch.
