Download or read book Marketing New England Poultry Vol 4 written by George B. Rogers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marketing New England Poultry, Vol. 4: Structure and Efficiency of the Assembly System The present assembly system in New England is a mixture of the old and the new. The older system is characterized by decreasing operations as numbers of small slaughterers, live-poultry stores, buyers of live poultry, terminal market live-poultry receivers, and city dressing plants dwindle. Newer types of firms, such as large processing plants, contract haulers, and contractors, have made tremendous gains at the expense of the older types and through extensive use of contract production. The size of the supply area for most firms has been shrinking. At the same time volume per firm has increased. As farm unit sizes have in creased and the number of small firms has declined, itinerant live buy ing has virtually disappeared. Commercial meat chicken production now greatly exceeds the volume of fowl in most areas. The increasing im portance of contract growing, particularly as firm size increases, has contributed to producing larger lots and enabled better scheduling of plant operations. Book Poultry and Eggs for Market and Export Classic Reprint

Download or read book Poultry and Eggs for Market and Export Classic Reprint written by D. D. Hyde and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-02 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poultry and Eggs for Market and Export This pamphlet is intended as a handy guide for farmers and others in practical methods of poultry-keeping. It is only in recent years that much attention has been given in New Zealand to poultry-rearing on a large scale, and it is not always recognised that a good deal of know ledge, as well as industry, is required to insure success. It is the desire of the writer to supply this knowledge and prevent beginners from falling into the mistakes which are often made and from spending money unnecessarily. Since the work of instruction was undertaken by the Government there has been a great improvement in the class of poultry kept by farmers, in the methods practised, and in the production of table-poultry and eggs. There is room for much further improvement, and in this direction the officers of the Poultry Division of the Depart ment of Agriculture are always willing to assist with information and advice. The results will depend, as in all business undertakings, upon the skill, industry, and business capacity of those engaged in it. With good management poultry-keeping will give steady cash returns at an early period after embarking in the enterprise, and no other class of stock will give so much profit on the capital invested as poultry will. Poultry-keeping should go hand-in-hand with dairying, also with fruit growing and bee-culture. In addition to their direct profit, poultry are valuable on the farm in enriching the soil or restoring impoverished soil to a fertile condition; in the orchard they search for and devour insects of all kinds, and not a grub will escape them. Poultry-keeping is full of details: attend to these and success will follow. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods and Equipment for Ice-Packing Poultry This report of research on methods and equipment employed in packing ice-packed whole ready-to-cook chicken in Georgia poultry plants is part of a larger project dealing with the more efficient work methods, equipment, and facilities for the off-farm handling, killing, dressing, eviscerating, cutting up, chilling, and packing of poultry. The work was under the supervision of Harold D. White, agricultural engineer, College of Agriculture, University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia, and John A. Hamann, marketing research analyst, Transportation and Facilities Branch, Marketing Research Division, Agri cultural Marketing Service, Washington, D. C. The study covers an area in poultry processing to which very little atten tion has been given in the past. Research techniques were employed to measure man and machine input requirements and resultant output-s, an approach that has not been previously employed in analyzing these operations. The authors received valuable suggestions from Fred C. Winter, Professor of Industrial Engineering, Columbia University, and Consulting Engineer to Transportation and Facilities Branch. The following Georgia poultry processing plants made their plant facilities available for this study. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Farm Poultry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Farm Poultry Classic Reprint written by F. C. Elford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farm Poultry Poultry Keeping Suited to ail - Poultry keeping is one of the most valuable industries carried on in connection with every well-con ducted farm or rural home. The money-making possibilities of poultry farms may be in doubt, but hens can be made pay on even the poorest farm in the Province. Probably no class of live stock is so widely scattered and universally reared. From the warmest regions of the tropics to the cold, bleak regions of the Yukon, man demands eggs as one Of the staple articles necessary to sustain life. Fresh eggs are pre ferred, therefore the hen has been introduced, and poultry has become adapted and acclimatized to all regions inhabited by civilized man. The flesh of fowls is delicious and nutritious; and eggs, one of the most per fect of human foods, are being used more and more. In former times poultry keeping was, and in many places is yet, a side issue, a mere incident to general farming, its responsibilities and cares falling on the overworked housewife or some of the very small chil dren. The fowls gathered their own subsistence, stole their nests, brought forth a few chickens, which lived or died according to conditions. The poultry was compelled to roost in the trees, on the fences, or perchance in the barn. About the only care given was to occasionally throw them a little food.
