Book Performance Evaluation Origins and Directions

Download or read book Performance Evaluation Origins and Directions written by Günter Haring and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-06-29 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph-like state-of-the-art survey presents the history, the key ideas, the success stories, and future challenges of performance evaluation and demonstrates the impact of performance evaluation on a variety of different areas through case studies in a coherent and comprehensive way. Leading researchers in the field have contributed 19 cross-reviewed topical chapters competently covering the whole range of performance evaluation, from theoretical and methodological issues to applications in numerous other fields. Additionally, the book contains one contribution on the role of performance evaluation in industry and personal accounts of four pioneering researchers describing the genesis of breakthrough results. The book will become a valuable source of reference and indispensable reading for anybody active or interested in performance evaluation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sixth International Workshop on Persistent Object Systems was held at Les Mazets des Roches near Tarascon, Provence in southern France from the fifth to the ninth of September 1994. The attractive context and autumn warmth greeted the 53 participants from 12 countries spread over five continents. Persistent object systems continue to grow in importance. Almost all significant uses of computers to support human endeavours depend on long-lived and large-scale systems. As expectations and ambitions rise so the sophistication of the systems we attempt to build also rises. The quality and integrity of the systems and their feasibility for supporting large groups of co-operating people depends on their technical founda tion. Persistent object systems are being developed which provide a more robust and yet simpler foundation for these persistent applications. The workshop followed the tradition of the previous workshops in the series, focusing on the design, implementation and use of persistent object systems in particular and persistent systems in general. There were clear signs that this line of research is maturing, as engineering issues were discussed with the aid of evidence from operational systems. The work presented covered the complete range of database facilities: transactions, concurrency, distribution, integrity and schema modifica tion. There were examples of very large scale use, one involving tens of terabytes of data. Language issues, particularly the provision of reflection, continued to be important.

Book excerpt: This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Entertainment Computing, ICEC 2010, held in Seoul, Korea, in August 2010, under the auspices of IFIP. The 19 revised long papers, 27 short papers and 33 poster papers and demos presented were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions for inclusion in the book. The papers cover all main domains of entertainment computing, from interactive music to games, taking a wide range of scientific domains from aesthetic to computer science.

Book Grid Computing The New Frontier of High Performance Computing

Download or read book Grid Computing The New Frontier of High Performance Computing written by Lucio Grandinetti and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-11-15 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book deals with the most recent technology of distributed computing. As Internet continues to grow and provide practical connectivity between users of computers it has become possible to consider use of computing resources which are far apart and connected by Wide Area Networks.Instead of using only local computing power it has become practical to access computing resources widely distributed. In some cases between different countries in other cases between different continents. This idea of using computer power is similar to the well known electric power utility technology. Hence the name of this distributed computing technology is the Grid Computing.Initially grid computing was used by technologically advanced scientific users. They used grid computing to experiment with large scale problems which required high performance computing facilities and collaborative work.In the next stage of development the grid computing technology has become effective and economically attractive for large and medium size commercial companies. It is expected that eventually the grid computing style of providing computing power will become universal reaching every user in industry and business. * Written by academic and industrial experts who have developed or used grid computing* Many proposed solutions have been tested in real life applications* Covers most essential and technically relevant issues in grid computing

Book Input Output Intensive Massively Parallel Computing

Download or read book Input Output Intensive Massively Parallel Computing written by Peter Brezany and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997-04-09 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Massively parallel processing is currently the most promising answer to the quest for increased computer performance. This has resulted in the development of new programming languages and programming environments and has stimulated the design and production of massively parallel supercomputers. The efficiency of concurrent computation and input/output essentially depends on the proper utilization of specific architectural features of the underlying hardware. This book focuses on development of runtime systems supporting execution of parallel code and on supercompilers automatically parallelizing code written in a sequential language. Fortran has been chosen for the presentation of the material because of its dominant role in high-performance programming for scientific and engineering applications.
