I cannot say that we have the facu1ty to produce solar ec1ipses in order to justify an Institute on this subject to be held in Athens, but I can say that the occurrence of a solar ec1ipse over Greece wou1d present, for optica1 and solar astronomers, the highest possibi1ity of exce11ent conditions for observation. We had this opportunity during the May 20, 1966 annu1ar solar ec1ipse over North Africa and southern Europe. At that time we had the p1easure to co11aborate with a 1arge number of research groups of various nationa1ities, who insta11ed optica1 and radio instru ments near or in Lagonissi, which 1ay a10ng the centra1 path, in order to fo110w the ec1ipse. A first meeting was then organized in order to discuss methods of data handling and avai1abi1ity of resu1ts. After a pre1iminary discussion it was suggested that a 1ater meeting shou1d be organized when final resu1ts were avai1ab1e.

Book excerpt: The destruction of the ozone layer, together with global warming, is one of the hot environmental topics of today. This book examines the effect of human activities on atmospheric ozone, namely the increase of tropospheric ozone and the general diminution of stratospheric ozone and the production of the Antarctic ozone hole. Also discussed is the role of remote sensing techniques in the understanding of the effects of human activities on atmospheric ozone as well as in the development of social and political awareness of the damage to the ozone layer by man-made chemicals, principally CFCs. This led to the formulation and ratification in 1989 of the Montreal Protocol on controlling/banning the manufacture and use of chemicals that damage the ozone layer. Since then, remote sensing has played a key role in monitoring atmospheric ozone concentration and determining the success of the Montreal Protocol in protecting the ozone layer from further damage. In this book, the renowned authors discuss the sophisticated instruments that have been launched into space to study not only ozone but also other trace gases in the atmosphere, some of which play a key role in the generation and destruction of ozone in the atmosphere. Professors Cracknell and Varotsos also examine the satellite-flown instruments which are involved in monitoring the absorption of solar ultraviolet light in the atmosphere in relation both to the generation and destruction of ozone and consequently to human health. This scholarly book, written by the foremost experts in the field, looks at remote sensing and its employment in the various aspects of ozone science. It is widely acknowledged that global warming, due to anthropogenic greenhouse gases emissions, represents a threat to the sustainability of human life on Earth. Book excerpt: In the four years which elapsed between our first workshop on .Tidal Friction and the Earth's Rotation and the second, the proceedings of which are presented here, many of the disciplines involved made ad vances which we felt should be exchanged. We were encouraged by the good reception our first report met with. Of course, more insight often means more problems. Therefore, this volume contains new results and revisions of matters which previously appeared settled. We are certainly far from "final answers". For this reason, differing opinions on some issues are to be found in this book. Moreover, we have refrained from making mathematical symbols uniform to avoid the risk of errors and non-compatibility with the earlier work of an author. The two workshops have stimulated collaboration between participants working in various fields. The final versions of the contributions have already profited from these discussions. We are convinced that they will also influence further investigations. This advancement of our past and future aims is based on the very existence of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies and on the support we have received from its leading members.
