Book Satellite Remote Sensing for Resources Development

Download or read book Satellite Remote Sensing for Resources Development written by United Nations Staff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Interregional Expert Meeting on the Use of Satellite Imaging RADAR and Thematic Mapping in Natural Resources Development, organized by the Economic and Social Develop ment Center of the German Foundation for International Development - DSE - in co-operation with the United Nations Department of Technical Co-operation for Develop ment - DTCD - was held in Berlin (West) from 21 November to 4 December 1984. As a result of this meeting, the participants made the following recommendations: A. REMOTE SENSING SYSTEMS AND AVAILABILITY OF DATA 1. Acquisition Platforms and their Continuity The participants expressed concern over the insecurity which clouds the future of orbital remote sensing platforms - the U. S. Landsat series should be continued, if at all possible. The planned initial ten-year operational lifetime of SPOT is en couraging and received support. ESA/ERS 1, Japanl J-ERS 1 and Canada's RADARSAT programmes should be given full imple mentation commitment, as soon as possible, and plans should be developed for system continuity. The participants noted that development of national and regional remote sensing programmes in developing nations, and establishment and upgrading of appropriate ground receiving stations for these systems depends critically on the prospect of platform continuity. vii SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING FOR RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT 2. Future Developments (a) Future developments in microwave remote sensing from space should be encouraged so as to circumvent, among others, the problem of cloud cover and to facilitate extension of application areas.

Book Proceedings of the Tiangong 2 Remote Sensing Application Conference

Download or read book Proceedings of the Tiangong 2 Remote Sensing Application Conference written by Yidong Gu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers a selection of peer-reviewed papers presented at the Tiangong-2 Data Utilization Conference, which was held in Beijing, China, in December 2018. As the first space laboratory in China, Tiangong-2 carries 3 new types of remote sensing payloads – the Wide-band Imaging Spectrometer (WIS), Three-dimensional Imaging Microwave Altimeter (TIMA), and Multi-band Ultraviolet Edge Imaging Spectrometer (MUEIS) – for observing the Earth. The spectrum of the WIS covers 18 bands, from visible to thermal infrared, with a swath of 300km. The TIMA is the first-ever system to use interferometric imaging radar altimeter (InIRA) technology to measure sea surface height and land topography at near-nadir angles with a wide swath. In turn, the MUEIS is the world’s first large-field atmospheric detector capable of quasi-synchronously detecting the characteristics of ultraviolet limb radiation in the middle atmosphere. The Earth observation data obtained by Tiangong-2 has attracted many research groups and been applied in such diverse areas as land resources, water resources, climate change, environmental monitoring, agriculture, forestry, ecology, oceanography, meteorology and so on. The main subjects considered in this proceedings volume include: payload design, data processing, data service and application. It also provides a comprehensive introduction to the research results gleaned by engineers, researchers and scientists throughout the lifecycle of the Tiangong-2 Earth observation data, which will improve the payload development and enhance remote sensing data applications.

Book Contributions of Land Remote Sensing for Decisions About Food Security and Human Health

Download or read book Contributions of Land Remote Sensing for Decisions About Food Security and Human Health written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-01-13 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land remote sensing: the use of space-based satellite technologies to obtain information on environmental variables such as land-use and land-covering combination with other types of data can provide information on changes in the Earth's surface and atmosphere that are critical for forecasting and responding to human welfare issues, such as disease outbreaks, food shortages, and floods. This book summarizes a workshop on the potential contributions of remotely sensed data to land-use and land-cover change and ways to use physical, biological, temporal, and social characteristics of particular locations to support decisions about human welfare. The discussions focused on human health and food security, two aspects of human welfare in which remotely-sensed environmental conditions play a key role. Examples illustrating the possibilities for applying remote sensing for societal benefit are included throughout the report. As a result of the workshop, three themes were identified that, if fostered, could help realize the potential for the application of land remote sensing to decisions about human welfare: (1) integration of spatial data on environmental conditions derived from remote sensing with socioeconomic data; (2) communication between remote sensing scientists and decision makers to determine effective use of land remote sensing data for human welfare issues; and (3) acquisition and access to long-term environmental data and development of capacity to interpret these data.
