Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine, 1918-1919, Vol. 16 In view Of the fact that canned tomatoes are included in our army ration, in which they may be substituted for potatoes to the extent of 20 per cent., it Seemed worth while to ascertain whether they possessed antiscorbutic properties. This appeared particularly desirable in view of our previous experiments1 which had demonstrated that the dehydrated vegetables commonly em ployed cannot be relied upon for furnishing this important dietary factor. From a theoretical standpoint a study of this question was of further interest, as the tomatoes have been subjected to a temperature above the boiling-point in the course of the canning process. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine, 1917-1918, Vol. 15 The conductance of gastric juice is mainly due to the free hydrochloric acid which it contains and the same is generally true of the gastric contents. After the introduction of water or solutions (as sugar solutions) of very low conductance, the curve for conductance very Closely follows the curve for free and total acid. This indicates that the equalization of osmotic concentra tion is brought about primarily by secretion of normal gastric juice. After the ingestion of food containing protein the conductance curve usually lies below that for free hydrochloric acid as deter mined by titration because the latter values are high due to gradual dissociation of the protein salt. In the presence of weak organic acid as after fruit ingestion or of phosphate, as where much saliva is swallowed, the conductance falls below titration values and is a better measure of free hydrochloric acid. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine, 1916-1917, Vol. 14 Rabbits were inoculated with material from the brains after death of seven cases of parenchymatous syphilis, and we have succeeded in obtaining strains in four cases. Two of these strains were lost after the second generation, but of the two remaining, we have been able to continue one to the seventh and the other to the ninth generation. Although these strains have not passed through so many generations, lesions have occurred in a sufficient number of rabbits of each generation to afford some interesting deductions. In reference to the percentage of takes, there has been a slight variation in the two strains studied. While one of the strains has produced lesions in eighty to ninety per cent. Of the rabbits inoculated, the other has shown a fluctuation between seventy and one hundred per cent. The incubation periods have likewise exhibited some irregularity. SO far they have varied from sixteen to sixty seven days, but have averaged from nineteen to thirty-one days. Neither of the strains have shown any distinctive features in regards to the incubation time. The character of the lesions has constituted a factor Of considerable significance, in that both hard nodules and large diffuse processes have been obtained. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine, 1919-1920, Vol. 17 That mutations may occur in the oogonial cells prior to matura tion is proved by a few cases in which a single female has given rise to more than a single individual of a new sex-linked recessive character. In the first of these cases the mutant called cut occurred as six males among the 131 sons of a particular female. The mutation tiny-wing occurred as two sons among about 150; sable-duplication occurred as three males among 133: and ivory as about IO per cent. Of the sons. There are one or two other such cases known. In all of these cases the facts are in accord with the hypothesis that the actual mutation occurred in the oogonial cells of particular females, and from one to a few cell-generations prior to maturation. There has been one case in which a female homozygous for an autosomal recessive was outcrossed to a wild type male, and produced among 61 offspring 6 flies that were heterozygous for a new allelomorph of the recessive. The muta tion responsible for the new allelomorph occurred in the wild type male in the. Spermatogonial stage far enough previous to spermatogenesis so that approximately a sixth of the sperm carried the gene. The proportion of gametes that carry the mutant character corresponds to the time previous to maturation at which the particular mutation occurred. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine, Vol. 2: 1904-1905 At the meeting of the Society for Experimental 'biology and Medicine, on April 19, the editor was instructed to present, in this volume, a brief biography of the founder and first president of the society. It is expected that the biography of Dr. Meltzer [page 5 will be followed, in succeeding volumes, by similar sketches of the lives of the future presidents of the society. The constitution, as given on page I I includes the amend ments that have been passed [page 99 since the publica tion of volume I. The numerals in parenthesis before the titles of the abstracts [page 19 (8 indicate numerical positions in the entire series of communications presented before the society since its organization. These numerals are given on the assumption that some of the mem bers desire to have bound together several (perhaps the first three) of these volumes. In such cases the numerical arrangement re ferred to, and that adopted for the index, will facilitate reference to the abstracts. The same is true of the page numerals in paren thesis. It has been repeatedly stated in the literature that botulinus toxin resists action of acids, but so far as we know nobody has observed the increase in potency of this toxin resulting from the change in its hydrogen ion con centration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine, 1915, Vol. 12 Studies of the behavior of methylene blue, and other dyes, in the ovaries, Show that, in some plants, introduced solutions may be taken up by the placenta and conducted through the funicular stalk to the antipodal region of the embryo-sac, finally staining the egg-cell. In other cases, the cells of the micropylar opening are stained, and the pollen tube in passing through this might be affected, and might also take up free foreign solutions in the open cavity. It is evident, therefore, that in the introduction of substances into such an ovary, the effect would depend upon the simpler mechanical features of the operation, the stage of development of the separate ovules, the progress of the advancing pollen-tubes, and the varying dilution of the reagent in its diffusion through many membranes. The individuals resulting from a treatment, affecting one element only, would be of a hybrid nature: and might be if both were affected to an unlike degree, or in an unlike manner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine, 1904 The characteristics of this ring may be briefly stated as fol lows: A few seconds after the urine has been carefully poured upon the acid, there forms, precisely on the line of junction, a grayish white ring about mm. High, resembling the albumin ring given by a faint trace of albumin, and gradually becoming more and more distinct, until, in some urines under conditions to be mentioned later, it presents the appearance of a heavy thick precipitate, the height of which increases continuously and renders the lower portion of the urine completely opaque. At this stage the color is somewhat different from that of a protein ring, in that it is more yellowish. Below the ring there is a greenish zone ex tending somewhat into the acid; above it, a reddish zone smaller than the former and more contracted. The white ring is seen best in daylight reflected from a dark background, the color rings are seen best if the test-tube is held against a white surface. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine, 1922-1923, Vol. 20: Including the Pacific Coast Branch, Minnesota Branch, Western New York Branch, and Peking (China) Branch Some eight years ago, while teaching anaesthesia, the writer became impressed with the need of a clinical measure of cyanosis. The general term, or, even its gradations spoken of as marked, moderate, or a mild degree of cyanosis, conveyed no accurate idea of the condition under observation. Furthermore, it was noted that when an observer had been with a patient for some time, his appreciation or registration of a color witnessed be came less acute. It is a common occurrence for a spectator to enter an operating room and be struck by the patient's cyanosis, the condition having been imperceptibly increased under the color wearied gaze of the anaesthetist. A standard measure ot'oyan osis, therefore, serves two purposes. It provides data relative to the degree of cyanosis present and provides a criterion for the color wearied vision of the constant observer. That there has been a general failure to meet the demand for a measure of cyanosis is possibly due to a rather unique and widely accepted impression that where there is cyanosis there must be an increased tension of carbon dioxide. This accidental association of carbon dioxide and cyanosis has so complicated the matter of measuring cyanosis that, to the average medical mind, the solution was quite out of the question. To brush away the cobwebs of carbon dioxide as an element affecting the color of the blood is to reduce the problem to its simplest terms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine, 1920-1921, Vol. 18 The experiments to be discussed presently will show that in salamanders hypophysis feeding produces gigantism and that it is the anterior lobe alone which possesses the ability of maintaining growth after the normal size of the species is reached. The effect of the hypophysis diet depends, however, on the developmental stage of the salamanders. Larvae do not respond to the anterior lobe diet; the growth-promoting effect Of the gland commences after metamorphosis has taken place.
