Book Proceedings of the Royal Society of Medicine Vol 8 Session 1914 15 Part I Occasional Lectures Notes on New Books Section of An sthetics Balneo

Download or read book Proceedings of the Royal Society of Medicine Vol 8 Session 1914 15 Part I Occasional Lectures Notes on New Books Section of An sthetics Balneo written by J. Y. W. Macalister and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-13 with total page 848 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Royal Society of Medicine, Vol. 8: Session 1914-15; Part I, Occasional Lectures, Notes on New Books, Section of Anæsthetics, Balneological and Climatological Section, Section for the Study of Disease in Children, Clinical Section, Dermatological Section, Electro-Therapeutical Section IT was not till recently that we realized how numerous are the difficulties that confront an investigator into the action Of drugs upon the human subject. The medical faculty is amazed at the claims made by another body professing faith in science, who are reported to have made astounding cures without the aid Of medicine. This body, hailing from the New World, even counts among its votaries citizens of this country. Sceptics explain away these alleged cures by a theory of auto-suggestion. But in the practice Of medicine itself auto-suggestion is not excluded for among the curative factors we have the personality of the physician, the inherited memory of the medicine man and his magical practices, and the pure effect of drugs as such. This will give us some idea Of the great intricacy of the problem; and the only way in which we can evade the almost insuperable difficulties that confront us, is by taking for our experimental subject an organism whose psychic power is so undeveloped as to be incapable of reacting to a suggestion. Such a rigorous condition is amply fulfilled by the plant, for no one will impute an emotional exuberance to a turnip. Results Of experiments carried out with plants will therefore give us the pure effect of the chemical agent. Therefore, we shall be on somewhat safer ground if before hazarding a new drug on a patient we examine its potency on an inarticulate and uncomplaining piece of vegetable. This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 982 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Royal Society of Medicine, Vol. 1: Session 1907-8; Part III, Odontological Section, Otological Section, Pathological Section, Surgical Section, Therapeutical and Pharmacological Section; Inde I mention these facts to Show what an absolute demonstration was given of the enormous value of this great discovery. In spit-e of this convincing proof, the new system, as is the case with every innovation, met with opposition in many quarters; and one of my earliest student recollections is that Of a clinical lecture in which an eminent London surgeon declared that the new method of treatment of wounds had proved in his wards to be a failure. He was, however, soon afterwards convinced that the failure was due to imperfect methods, and became a warm advocate of antiseptic surgery. In our days it has become the only justifiable method Of treating wounds, and its effects have been studied in all directions, in the treatment Of all conditions of disease, with the greatest benefit to suffering humanity. Lord Lister's prophecy in 1869 has been amply fulfilled, when he said: The antiseptic treat ment is continually attracting more and more attention in various parts of the world, and whether in the form which it has now reached, or in some other and more perfect shape, its universal adoption can only be a question of time. The noble institutions of which our country is justly proud, admirably adapted alike for the treatment of the Sick and the instruction of the student, will then be cleared of the only blot that now ittaches to them. They have been cleansed from this blot, and it is impossible to estimate the number of valuable lives that have been saved ince that time by the universal adoption of the antiseptic treatment. Book Drawn from the Antique

Download or read book Drawn from the Antique written by Adriano Aymonino and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This catalogue examines one of the most important educational tools and sources of inspiration for Western artists for over five hundred years: drawing after the Antique. From the Renaissance to the 19th century, classical statues offered young artists idealised models from which they could learn to represent the volumes, poses and expressions of the human figure and which, simultaneously, provided perfected examples of anatomy and proportion. For established artists, antique statues and reliefs presented an immense repertory of forms that they could use as inspiration for their own creations. Through a selection of thirty-nine drawings, prints and paintings, covering more than four hundred years and by artists as different as Federico Zuccaro, Hendrick Goltzius, Peter Paul Rubens, Charles-Joseph Natoire, Henry Fuseli and Joseph Mallord William Turner, this catalogue provides the first overview of a phenomenon crucial for the understanding and appreciation of European art."--Page 2 of cover.

Book An Anthology of London in Literature 1558 1914

Download or read book An Anthology of London in Literature 1558 1914 written by Geoffrey G. Hiller and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2019-02-25 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an anthology of extracts of literary writing (in prose, verse and drama) about London and its diverse inhabitants, taken from the accession of Queen Elizabeth I in 1558 to the outbreak of the Great War in 1914. The 143 extracts, divided into four periods (1558-1659, 1660-1780, 1781-1870 and 1871-1914), range from about 250 words to 2,500. Each of the four periods has an introduction that deals with relevant social, geographical and historical developments, and each extract is introduced with a contextualizing headnote and furnished with explanatory footnotes. In addition, the general introduction to the anthology addresses some of the literary questions that arise in writing about London, and the book ends with many suggestions for further reading. It should appeal not only to the general reader interested in London and its representation, but also to students of literature in courses about ‘reading the city’.
