Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Pennsylvania Democratic State Convention: Held at Harrisburg, March 4th, 1856 In pursuance of the call of the Democratic State Central Committee, the Pennsylvania Democratic State Convention for appointing Delegates to the Cincinnati Convention, and also for nominating candidates for Canal Commissioner, Auditor-General, and Surveyor-General, assembled in the hall of the House of Representatives, at Harrisburg, on the morning of the 4th day of March, 1856. Long before the appointed time of meeting, the hall was crowded with Delegates and others, who vied with each other in their expressions of regard and enthusiasm for Pennsylvania's favorite son. It was with feelings of delight that we saw these men - the old men and the young - those who have heretofore had other preferences, but now ardently for Mr. Buchanan, - the representatives of the Democratic masses of our State, and fresh from their midst, so unanimous in expressing the sentiments of their constituents. At ten o'clock, the Convention was called to order by James P. Johnston, Esq., Chairman of the State Central Committee. On motion of Mr. Piollet, of Bradford, Gen. J. P. Brawley, of Crawford, was appointed temporary Chairman, and Messrs. R. Biddle Roberts, of Alleghany, and B. F. Sloan, of Erie, Secretaries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Democratic Convention: Held at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, March 5, 1832 In conformity with the recommendation of the Democratic Republican Members of the Legislature on the 8th day of December, 1831, recommending a time and place for holding a State Convention, to place in nomination candidates for the Presidency and Vice Presidency of the United States, and a person for the office of Governor - a Convention of Delegates elected by the Democratic citizens of the several counties of this Commonwealth, was held at Harrisburg on Monday, 5th of March, 1882. Convention met at the Court House, at 11 o'clock, A. M. On motion, William M'Creery, of Washington county, was appointed Chairman, for the purpose of organization; and Joseph B. Anthony of Lycoming, and J. Y. Barclay of Westmoreland, Secretaries. On motion of Mr. Potter, it was Resolved, That where delegates have been appointed from any county or district, and a vacancy has occurred, the delegates in attendance from such county or district, are authorised to supply such vacancy. The names of the delegates being called over, one hundred and thirty two delegates, representing all the counties in the State, answered to their names. On motion of Mr. Fritz, it was Resolved, That Editors of newspapers residing in Harrisburg, be invited to take seats within the bar of the convention. The Convention then proceeded to elect officers of the Convention. Viva voce: Whereupon, Frederick Smith, of Franklin county, was elected President; William M'Creery, of Washington county, Christian Garber of Huntingdon county, Alexander Cook, of Philadelphia, and Joseph B. Anthony, of Lycoming county, Vice Presidents; and John Y. Barclay, of Westmoreland, and Henry Frick of Northumberland, Secretaries; and the Convention adjourned until half past three o'clock, P. M.
