Book Proceedings of the National Workshop on Integrated Coastal Zone Management in the Seychelles

Download or read book Proceedings of the National Workshop on Integrated Coastal Zone Management in the Seychelles written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coastal zones are important issues in the international debate on the environment and sustainable development. The coastal zone in general consists of the interface between land and sea and in such an equation marine space and resources are as important as terrestrial ones. This means that small island developing states such as the Seychelles have a large coastal area to land mass ratio. As concisely as possible, this document reveals the status of all major and pressing issues revolving around the coastal zone and provides some suggestions on how to move forward. Firstly, the coastal zone of Seychelles is described and some parameters are presented to assist in a precise definition of the coastal zone. This chapter includes an overview of all the principal islands. Secondly, the major development opportunities and threats on the coastal zone of Mahe are outlined. These include tourism, commercial and manufacturing industries and ports. Fisheries and agriculture are presented in the chapter entitled natural resource use: threats and weaknesses. This chapter also outlines the use of geological resources such as sand. Since there are major threats to the integrity of the coastal zone, these are treated separately. These trends in environmental concern include biodiversity and the management of protected areas, coastal erosion, population and urban pressure and development on the outer islands. Climate change is a global worry and since a rising sea level and other phenomena associated with climate change could devastate the coastal zone; this issue is investigated in another chapter. Many projects impinging on the coastal zone are donor driven. Therefore, the status of these projects is examined. Management strengths and weaknesses are described with a view to promote Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM). The necessary for ICZM and constraints hindering integrated approaches treated. Finally, some recommendations are outlined to provide some vitally needed to build a foundation for ICZM in Seychelles.

Book Marine and Coastal Protected Areas

Download or read book Marine and Coastal Protected Areas written by Rodney V. Salm and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2000 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a new edition of the classic textbook on marine protected area (MPA) management in the tropics, originally produced as an output of the Bali World Parks Congress in 1982. Approaches to planning and managing MPAs have evolved considerably. Major advances include innovative financing mechanisms, partnerships with the private sector and NGOs, and collaborative management between government and coastal communities. These advances have brought new approaches for MPA establishment and management that are more participatory, involving communities through interaction and collaboration rather than prescription. With new case studies and illustrations, the guide comes in a water-resistant cover for field use. It is intended for those who plan individual and/or national MPA systems and gives philosophical context for MPAs along with some basic principles and approaches.

Book Coastal Zone Management Imperative for Maritime Developing Nations

Download or read book Coastal Zone Management Imperative for Maritime Developing Nations written by B.U. Haq and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropogenic transformation of the coastal zone continues at a steady pace, especially in the developing maritime countries, where coastal resources are often crucial to national economies. However, exploitation of these resources is often indiscriminate, ill planned, or carried out without adequate scientific knowledge. This leads to rapid resource depletion, and often irreversible environmental degradation. The 1992 Rio de Janeiro UN Conference on Environment and Development recognized the expediency of an integrated and sustainable use of all coastal resources, functions and services grounded on sound scientific data. The present volume is based on the 1994 international workshop Integrated Coastal Zone Management, and brings together contributions by leading specialists both on basic concepts and on applications of coastal management. The work is divided into six parts, dealing with the conceptual framework of ICZM; regional and global aspects of coastal management; environmental assessment in ICZM; capacity building and technology transfer; monitoring and environmental analysis; and case studies and status of ICZM plans. The book also incorporates an interactive ICZM planning module, COSMO, which can be of use in designing a management plan for a coast. Attention is also given to long-term environmental effects of present-day actions. It is hoped that COSMO will prove an additional learning tool for ICZM practitioners and enhance the value of the book. This work is intended to give a broad coverage of conceptual and technical aspects of ICZM, and will be of use to operational executives as well as students of ICZM, environmental economists, policy-makers and senior managers in the international development agencies and governmental and non-governmental organizations. It can be recommended as a textbook and as a reference work.

Book Routledge Handbook of National and Regional Ocean Policies

Download or read book Routledge Handbook of National and Regional Ocean Policies written by Biliana Cicin-Sain and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 683 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive handbook, prepared by leading ocean policy academics and practitioners from around the world, presents in-depth analyses of the experiences of fifteen developed and developing nations and four key regions of the world that have taken concrete steps toward cross-cutting and integrated national and regional ocean policy. All chapters follow a common framework for policy analysis. While most coastal nations of the world already have a variety of sectoral policies in place to manage different uses of the ocean (such as shipping, fishing, oil and gas development), in the last two decades, the coastal nations covered in the book have undertaken concerted efforts to articulate and implement an integrated, ecosystem-based vision for the governance of ocean areas under their jurisdiction. This includes goals and procedures to harmonize existing uses and laws, to foster sustainable development of ocean areas, to protect biodiversity and vulnerable resources and ecosystems, and to coordinate the actions of the many government agencies that are typically involved in oceans affairs. The book highlights the serious conflicts of use in most national ocean zones and the varying attempts by nations to follow the prescriptions emanating from the 1982 UN Law of the Sea Convention and the outcomes of the 1992, 2002, and 2012 sustainable development summits. The interrelationship among uses and processes in the coast and ocean requires that ocean governance be integrated, precautionary, and anticipatory. Overall, the book provides a definitive state-of-the-art review and analysis of national and regional ocean policies around the world.

Book Integrated Management of Coastal Zones

Download or read book Integrated Management of Coastal Zones written by John R. Clark and published by Bernan Press(PA). This book was released on 1992 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report identifies governmental actions that can lead to effective management of coastal resources and strenghtening the national capacity for effective coastal resources management through Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM). This is a system for controlling development and other human activities that effect the condition of economic resources and the quality of environment in coastal zones. The overall objective of ICZM is to provide for sustainable use of coastal natural resources and for maintenance of biodiversity. Environmentally planned development is reputed to add to economic and social prosperity of a coastal community in the long term. The orientation of the report is toward developing countries, particularly those of the coastal tropics. Fisheries productivity, increased tourism revenus, sustained mangrove forestry, and security from natrual hazard devastation are among the practical benefits of ICZM. ICZM incorporates modern principles of planning and resources management, intensive information bases an interdisciplinary processes. A major objective is to facilitate the interactions of different coastal economic sectors (e.g., shipping, agriculturte, fisheries) toward potimal socio-econopmic outcomes, including resolution of conflicts between sectors. ICZM may be initiated in response to a planning mandate but more often because of a crisis - a use conflict, a severe decline in a resource, or a devasting experience with natural hazards.
