Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Municipal Engineers of the City of New York, and Constitution, by-Laws, List of Members and Annual Report, 1903 Park building suffered the same relapse as did learning and the arts during the long, dreary middle ages, but with their renaissance came its own revival, and Louis XIV gave Paris a great system of parks and gardens. The French capital has, in this respect, retained its pre-eminence among the great cities of the world, as will be seen by a comparison of the park reservations of some of them drawn to the same scale. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Municipal Engineers of the City of New York: Proceedings for 1910 The proposed Henry Hudson Memorial Bridge, as I presume every member of the Society knows, is designed largely as a rein forced concrete structure, but that does not mean that all parts of the bridge over the 3 000 ft. Of its length are of reinforced con crete. The principal reinforced concrete feature is the main arch over the Spuyten Duyvil Creek, having a clear Span of 703 ft. And a clear height under the sofiit at the crown Of about 180 ft. The approaches are interesting constructions of masonry, but they involve no features of special interest. The spans are circular arches about 108 ft. In the clear. They will be constructed of native stone, i. E., selected gneiss rock as it is found on Manhattan Island. This book was released on 2017-07-07 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Municipal Engineers of the City of New York, 1904 In view of the instructions given to the Commission, it seemed necessary that a broad view of the question should be taken and that the problem of the future water supply of the city should, as far as possible, be settled for a long period in the future. At the same time these instructions were such that the Commission was not permitted to consider any source of supply Of an interstate char acter, for the reason that any attempt to take water flowing from this State into other States would be followed by litigation of so serious a character that the construction of an additional supply would be deferred indefinitely; in other words, the Commission was limited to the consideration of those sources which were avail able without the shadow Of litigation over them. Those instructions shut out such streams as the Housatonic, the Ten Mile River, which is a branch of the Housatonic, or any stream flowing from New York into New Jersey. The investigations Of the Commission were thus practically limited to the waters Of the Hudson River or to those tributary to it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Municipal Engineers of the City of New York: Proceedings for 1909 Probably the first attempt to formulate a method of storm-water sewer design was made in 1849 by an English engineer, John Rowe, who compiled a set of tables showing the acreage supposed to be drained by various Sim of sewers laid to difierent grades. It was, naturally, extremely crude, no allowance being made for any of the varying factors of different drainage areas, such as rainfall, im perviousness, slope or manner Of collection, all Of which have a marked influence upon the necessary Sizes of sewers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Municipal Engineers of the City of New York: Proceedings for 1911 For such purposes no set of facts is of so great importance as the composition and character and structure both of the soil mantle and of bed rock. It is readily established that on Manhattan the soil as a rule is very unlike the bed rock. It contains immense quantities of rock matter, sands and gravels and boulders, that could not under any circumstances be derived from bed rock where the soil now lies. Furthermore, it contains large boulders, generally mixed promiscuously through the mass, and seems to be almost as unlike the rock floor in depth as at the surface. This is regarded by the geologist as conclusive proof that the soil is of foreign derivation largely and that it has been spread unevenly over the rock floor by some agency not at present in evidence. Such a condi tion of affairs is, on the whole, abnormal. Soils are regularly developed by the disintegration and decay of bed rock in situ - they are the so-called residuary soils. The New York City soils are trans ported instead, and transported, furthermore, by a rather abnormal agency - one that could carry boulders and cobbles as well as sand and clay at the same time and to the same place. Such an agency might be expected to leave the deposits unevenly and somewhat promiscuously distributed. In other words, the present topography of the soil surface is not necessarily a duplicate of the topography of the rock floor, although the larger features of relief marked by the chief ridges and longer valleys may coincide. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Municipal Engineers of the City of New York: Proceedings for 1912 Freight terminals and the operating conditions whereby there can be rapid and economical transference of miscellaneous freight have not until recently been a matter of moment to municipal engineers. A freight terminal, whether for rail or water-home freight, formerly came within the province of the railway engineer and the steamship superintendent. In the United States, cities in the past have had little if any ownership in their water-fronts. The wharves, piers and bulkheads, and the structures upon them belonged either to private owners, to steamship companies or later to the railways. That a city should have any control over a rail way terminal, even though correlated with a water terminal, is to-day almost an anomaly in this country, although such combined terminals at the larger foreign ports are under the jurisdiction of public authority. There are a few similar ports in this country. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Municipal Engineers of the City of New York: Proceedings for 1907 Now, I do not know how often an examination of floors that have failed, would reveal a factor of safety Of about two, used in design; but it is my belief that such would be the case more often than might be supposed. I do know that a floor is sometimes said to he figured with a factor of safety of four, when it is designed to fail under its dead load plus four times the assumed live load, instead Of under four times the sum Of its live and dead loads, as should he understood when factor Of safety Of a floor is given.i-'ig. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Report of the Officers and Committees of the Architectural League of New York: Constitution and by-Laws and the Roll of Membership, 1912-1913 In 1892, on the completion of the building of the American Fine Arts Society, the League obtained per manent quarters in that building, where it maintains a club room for the use of the members, a room for meet ings, and its library. Its annual exhibitions are regularly held in the galleries of the same building. The work of the League falls naturally into two divi sions, professional and public. Its professional work is carried on through the meetings of the League and the work of its various committees. Its public work em braces all that is concerned with the general public, and chiefly centers in its exhibitions. These have been held annually since 1886, and they now form an important feature in the art exhibitions in New York each season. During the last year the exhibition has been made free to the public on Saturdays, and its popularity has been greatly increased by this policy. The opening reception at the beginning of the exhibitions invariably brings together a large and representative company and the interest of the general public is further invited in the public meetings or lectures, of which three are given dur ing the continuance of each exhibition, and which have invariably developed a wide interest in the League and its work. Members who contemplate foreign travel are again reminded that upon proper verification of their member ship in the Architectural League of New York, the courtesy of free admission with permission to sketch is permitted by the authorities of certain galleries of the principal cities of Europe.
