Download or read book Beef Cattle Production and Trade written by Lewis Kahn and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2014-04-15 with total page 894 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beef Cattle Production and Trade covers all aspects of the beef industry from paddock to plate. It is an international text with an emphasis on Australian beef production, written by experts in the field. The book begins with an overview of the historical evolution of world beef consumption and introductory chapters on carcass and meat quality, market preparation and world beef production. North America, Brazil, China, South-East Asia and Japan are discussed in separate chapters, followed by Australian beef production, including feed lotting and live export. The remaining chapters summarise R&D, emphasising the Australian experience, and look at different production systems and aspects of animal husbandry such as health, reproduction, grazing, feeding and finishing, genetics and breeding, production efficiency, environmental management and business management. The final chapter examines various case studies in northern and southern Australia, covering feed demand and supply, supplements, pasture management, heifer and weaner management, and management of internal and external parasites.

Download or read book Natural and Anthropogenic Disasters written by M.K. Jha and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-20 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major challenges of the 21st century faced by human beings are how to achieve water security, food security, energy security and environmental security. Owing to enhanced natural/anthropogenic disasters worldwide, these challenges become much more complicated and daunting especially for developing countries. Therefore, it is important to highlight the risk of different disasters as well as the modern tools and techniques for minimizing disaster incidence and losses. Disaster management being highly multidisciplinary in nature, a comprehensive book dealing with different aspects of disaster management, and encompassing important disasters faced by humankind is presently not available. This book is an attempt to fulfill this gap. It provides clear, comprehensive, and up-to-date information about different facets of disaster management along with salient case studies. The book highlights the current status of disaster management focusing on developing nations, discusses vital issues such as climate change and sustainable development, modern approaches and tools/techniques, and the challenges of and future R&D needs for sustainable disaster management.

Download or read book Handbook of Agricultural Productivity written by Miloslav Rechcigl and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The greatest challenge of our time is to produce sufficient food ot keep pace with the rapidly growing population. In the opinion of experts, during the next 25 years there will be a need for as much food as was produced in the entire history of mankind to date. Of the various measures available, improvement in agricultural productivity is judged as the ultimate means of augmenting food production and supplies. In this Handbook, an international team of experts consider the most important factors affecting production of both crops and livestock. This Handbook is intended as a scientific guide to practitioners and students, as well as to researchers, who should find here stimulating ideas for further exploration.
Download or read book Selected Readings in Applied Climatology written by Robert V. Rohli and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-25 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last 40 years, applied climatologists have been producing increasingly sophisticated and insightful research which has led to the current level of recognition that climate and particularly climatic changes have important environmental, economic, and recreational impacts. Furthermore, as societal needs for optimizing the use of resources increase, applied climatology will continue to grow in importance. Selected Readings in Applied Climatology is a collection of academic-style vignettes of research over the past 40 years that represents the evolution of this important subfield, and, therefore, provides a framework for appreciating the impacts of climate on society. After an introductory editorial chapter placing the development of applied climatology in its historical context, the book is divided into topical sections on applied climatological research in atmospheric circulation variability; the biosphere; water and energy resources; agriculture; and human health, comfort and behavior. The final section includes a collection of essays on communicating climatic information to the public. Selected Readings in Applied Climatology will be beneficial to those whose field of interest affects, and is affected by, climate, such as meteorologists, ecologists, water resource planners, energy demand forecasters, commodities brokers, agriculturalists, sociologists, and media consultants.
Download or read book Scientific Assessment of the Effects of Global Change on the United States written by George Gray and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2009-05 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This national scientific assessment integrates, evaluates, and interprets the findings of the U.S. Climate Change Science Program and draws from and synthesizes findings from previous assessments of the science. It analyzes current trends in global change, both natural and human-induced, and projects major trends for the future. It analyzes the effects of these changes on the natural environment, ag., water resources, social systems, energy production and use, transport., and human health. This assessment addresses not only climate change, but also other change in the global environment ¿ including water resources, oceans, atmospheric chemistry, land productivity, and ecological systems¿that may alter the capacity of Earth to sustain life. Download or read book Air Quality and Livestock Farming written by Thomas Banhazi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-06-13 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air quality has a direct influence on health, welfare and production performance of livestock as the high concentrations of noxious gases, dust and airborne microorganisms are likely to reduce production efficiency and the general welfare of farm animals. Long term exposure to particulates in livestock buildings might also affect the respiratory health of farm workers. Dust in animal buildings contains many biologically active substances such as bacteria, fungi, endotoxins and residues of antibiotics (as a result of veterinary treatments) that are suspected to be hazardous to human health. Furthermore, air pollutants emitted from livestock buildings can reduce air, water and soil quality and can potentially undermine the health of nearby residents. Airborne emissions include ammonia, methane, nitrous oxide, particulates like dust and microorganisms. In addition, other potentially harmful substances such as heavy metals, antibiotic residues and components of disinfectants might be also emitted from livestock building that are potentially damaging to ecosystems. In this book, key aspects of agricultural air quality, such as monitoring, managing and reducing airborne pollutants in and around livestock facilities are reviewed. Features: addressing the raising awareness of the importance of optimal health and welfare for lifestock species with contributions from international specialists and researchers providing up-to-date information for professionals involved in modern animal producti This book will be useful for farming professionals, academics, students, policy makers, business leaders, regulatory bodies and agricultural consultants.

Download or read book Pollution Abatement from Cattle Feedlots in Northeastern Colorado and Nebraska written by Lynn K. Porter and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climatic factors, feedlot runoff, and organic material in the runoff were evaluated in experimental and commercial feedlots. The effects of slope, stocking rates, terraces, basins, and holding ponds were evaluated to obtain best controls for containing runoff. The organic manure-soil interface severely restricts the movement of water, nitrates, organic substances, and air into the soil beneath feedlots. Management practices, such as good drainage, that enhance aeration will decrease the evolution of volatile compounds.
