Download or read book Computer Epistemology written by Tibor Vamos and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1991-03-22 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an essay on relevant problems of epistemology (the theory of knowledge) related to computer science. It draws a continuous line between the earliest scientific approaches of epistemology, starting with the Greek Classics and the recent practical and theoretical problems of computer modelling, and by that the appropriate application of computers to our present problems. Uncertainty, logic and language are the key issues of this road leading to some new aspects of cognitive psychology and unification of the different results for a modelling procedure. The book is not a textbook but a critical survey of usual and advertised methods with an evaluation of them from the point of view of their applicability, reliability and limits. Probability, Bayesian, Dempster-Shafer, fuzzy and other approaches are treated in this way in uncertainty, different worlds' concepts, non-monotonic logic and other methods and views in logic. The emphasis in linguistics is put on the meta concept, and in cognitive applications of the pattern concept.Written mostly in an entertaining style, this book provides a more palatable reading of a profound subject.

Book Asset Pricing and Portfolio Choice Theory

Download or read book Asset Pricing and Portfolio Choice Theory written by Kerry Back and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-10 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Asset Pricing and Portfolio Choice Theory, Kerry E. Back at last offers what is at once a welcoming introduction to and a comprehensive overview of asset pricing. Useful as a textbook for graduate students in finance, with extensive exercises and a solutions manual available for professors, the book will also serve as an essential reference for scholars and professionals, as it includes detailed proofs and calculations as section appendices. Topics covered include the classical results on single-period, discrete-time, and continuous-time models, as well as various proposed explanations for the equity premium and risk-free rate puzzles and chapters on heterogeneous beliefs, asymmetric information, non-expected utility preferences, and production models. The book includes numerous exercises designed to provide practice with the concepts and to introduce additional results. Each chapter concludes with a notes and references section that supplies pathways to additional developments in the field.

Book Transactions of the Tenth Prague Conferences

Download or read book Transactions of the Tenth Prague Conferences written by J.A. Vísek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Conference was organized by the Institute of Information Theory and Automation of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences from July 7 - 11, 1986, in Prague. The round number of the conference was only one of the jubilees connected with its organization. Namely, thirty years of the Prague Conferences (the first one was organized in autumn 1956 in Liblice near Prague), and two anniversaries of Professor Anton1n Spacek, the inspirator and first organizer of the Prague Conferences - 75 years of his birth and 25 years of his untimely death. (More about Professor Spacek can be found in the Transactions of the Sixth Prague Conferen ce) • The Tenth Prague Conference kept the traditional style and orien tation typical for the previous Prague Conferences. Almost two hund red of participants from 23 countries (Algerie, Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Federal Republic of Germany, Finland, France, German Democratic Republic, Great Britain, Hungary, Iran, Italy, Ja pan, Netherlands, Poland, Roumania, Soviet Union, Sweden, Switzerland, United States, Vietnam and West Berlin) took part in its sessions and discussions. There were 14 invited lectures and . 92 short contri butions included in four parallel sections of the Conference program me: further, 12 contributions were presented as posters. The invited lectures and submitted contributions covered the three traditional subjects of the Prague Conferences introduced in their title, as well as lots of further applications of the probability theory and mathe matical statistics. Most of the presented lectures and contributions are published in the present Conference Transactions.

Book Biomathematics and Related Computational Problems

Download or read book Biomathematics and Related Computational Problems written by L.M. Ricciardi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 719 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biomathematics emerged and rapidly grew as an independent discipline in the late sixties as scientists with various backgrounds in the mathematical, biological and physical sciences gathered together to form Departments and Institutes centered around this discipline that many at that time felt should fall between the cracks of legitimate science. For various reasons some of these new institutions vanished in the mid-seventies, particularly in the U. S. , the main reason for their demise being economic. Nevertheless, good biomathematical so that the range research has been ceaselessly carried on by numerous workers worldwide of this activity appears now as truly impressive: from useful and effective mathematical statements about problems that are firmly rooted in the 'wet' reality of biology to deep theoretical investigations on outstanding basic questions. It is also interesting to take note that some ideas and theories set forth by 'paleo-biomathematicians' almost a quarter of century ago are now becoming highly appreciated also by scientists engaged in quite different research fields. For instance, neural nets is the hot topic in computer science these days! Well aware of the growing interest in this relatively new field, years back I organized a small workshop on Biomathematics: Current Status and Future Perspectives which was held at the University of Salerno during the middle of April, 1980.
