Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As in other African countries, the engagement of faith-based organizations (FBOs) in the development sector in Ethiopia is tremendous and manifold. FBOs are, however, still insufficiently integrated in the development discourse and often operate under the radar of international and multilateral donors. This can be to a large extent reasoned by the fact that very little empirical research has hitherto been undertaken to assess the impact of FBO activities in Ethiopia. Upon this background, this study contributes to the debate among practitioners and researchers on the actual and potential contribution of FBOs to development in Ethiopia. This is exemplified by the work of the Ethiopian Kale Heywet Church (EKHC) in rural areas of southern Ethiopia in the thematic fields of schooling, ecological balance and food security. Cross-sectional and case study designs form the principal approaches used in the study; both quantitative and qualitative methods were used.

Book excerpt: Ethiopia's economic development just like many countries in Africa, is largely dependent on an educated workforce, yet one of the greatest limitations to educational progress is a disadvantaged economy. The Ethiopian government understands the value of education and currently dedicates a significant amount of resources towards its development at all levels. Research has been invigorated to discover new knowledge that can be implemented and advance the education system in Ethiopia. Recognizing the need for 21st century workers who are skilled in science, technology, mathematics, and engineering (STEM), Ethiopian universities are steering students towards these STEM-related degrees. While foreign investment and aids will likely play an important role in Ethiopian education, those who are developing the educational system are strongly encouraged to focus primarily on meeting the needs of the Ethiopian people, with the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful, not only in the cultural and political context of East Africa, but also to prepare Ethiopians to the world. The educational system of Ethiopia must simultaneously be culturally relevant and flexible/responsive and the country must invest heavily in teacher training and development. An educational system is only as good as its teachers. One of the consequences of a rapidly expanding educational mission is the inability to build and maintain instructional capacity of which Ethiopia should strive to improve. There is also a need to increase the use of technology to aid the medium of exchange and communication. Gender equity must also be reflected in Ethiopia's educational system. The concept of inclusive education is broad and encompassing not just physical inclusion, but also the active participation of all learners. For gender equality, the curriculum and instruction in Ethiopia must engage all learners, as the system should prepare boys and girls to meet the country's economic and social needs. Finally, greater effort must be made to provide educational opportunities to students in rural areas. Naturally, this goal is tied to economic and political factors, particularly the provision of communication and transportation to connect rural areas and improve accessibility.

Book excerpt: In June 2016, the Norwegian Programme for Capacity Development in Higher Education and Research for Development (Norhed) hosted a conference on the theme of knowledge for development in an attempt to shift the focus of the programme towards its academic content. This book follows up on that event. The conference highlighted the usefulness of presenting the value of Norheds different projects to the world, showing how they improve knowledge and expand access to it through co-operation. A wish for more meta-knowledge was also expressed and this gives rise to the following questions: Is this way of co-operating contributing to the growth of independent post-colonial knowledge production in the South, based on analyses of local data and experiences in ways that are relevant to our shared future? Does the growth of academic independence, as well as greater equality, and the ability to develop theories different to those imposed by the better-off parts of the world, give rise to deeper understandings and better explanations? Does it, at least, spread the ability to translate existing methodologies in ways that add meaning to observations of local context and data, and thus enhance the relevance and influence of the academic profession locally and internationally? This book, in its varied contributions, does not provide definite answers to these questions but it does show that Norhed is a step in the right direction. Norhed is an attempt to fund collaboration within and between higher education institutions. We know that both the uniqueness of this programme, and ideas of how to better utilise the learning and experience emerging from it, call for more elaboration and broader dissemination before we can offer further guidance on how to do things better. This book is a first attempt.
