Book Interaction Models

    Book Details:
  • Author : Norman Biggs
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1977-11-24
  • ISBN : 0521217709
  • Pages : 109 pages

Download or read book Interaction Models written by Norman Biggs and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1977-11-24 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on a set of lectures given to a mixed audience of physicists and mathematicians. The desire to be intelligible to both groups is the underlying preoccupation of the author. Physicists nowadays are particularly interested in phase transitions. The typical situation is that a system of interacting particles exhibits an abrupt change of behaviour at a certain temperature, although the local forces between the particles are thought to be smooth functions of temperature. This account discusses the theory behind a simple model of such phenomena. An important tool is the mathematical discipline known as the Theory of Graphs. There are five chapters, each subdivided into sections. The first chapter is intended as a broad introduction to the subject, and it is written in a more informal manner than the rest. Notes and references for each chapter are given at the end of the chapter.

Book ZZ 2 Homotopy Theory

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael Charles Crabb
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1980-11-28
  • ISBN : 0521280516
  • Pages : 137 pages

Download or read book ZZ 2 Homotopy Theory written by Michael Charles Crabb and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1980-11-28 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This account is a study of twofold symmetry in algebraic topology. The author discusses specifically the antipodal involution of a real vector bundle - multiplication by - I in each fibre; doubling and squaring operations; the symmetry of bilinear forms and Hermitian K-theory. In spite of its title, this is not a treatise on equivariant topology; rather it is the language in which to describe the symmetry. Familiarity with the basic concepts of algebraic topology (homotopy, stable homotopy, homology, K-theory, the Pontrjagin-Thom transfer construction) is assumed. Detailed proofs are not given (the expert reader will be able to supply them when necessary) yet nowhere is credibility lost. Thus the approach is elementary enough to provide an introduction to the subject suitable for graduate students although research workers will find here much of interest.

Book Uniform Algebras and Jensen Measures

Download or read book Uniform Algebras and Jensen Measures written by Theodore W. Gamelin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1978 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These lecture notes are devoted to an area of current research interest that bridges functional analysis and function theory. The unifying theme is the notion of subharmonicity with respect to a uniform algebra. The topics covered include the rudiments of Choquet theory, various classes of representing measures, the duality between abstract sub-harmonic functions and Jensen measures, applications to problems of approximation of plurisubharmonic functions of several complex variables, and Cole's theory of estimates for conjugate functions. Many of the results are published here for the first time in monograph form.

Book Surveys in Combinatorics

Download or read book Surveys in Combinatorics written by B. Bollobás and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1979-08-09 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combinatorics is an active field of mathematical study and the British Combinatorial Conference, held biennially, aims to survey the most important developments by inviting distinguished mathematicians to lecture at the meeting. The contributions of the principal lecturers at the Seventh Conference, held in Cambridge, are published here and the topics reflect the breadth of the subject. Each author has written a broadly conceived survey, not limited to his own work, but intended for wide readership. Important aspects of the subject are emphasized so that non-specialists will find them understandable. Topics covered include graph theory, matroids, combinatorial set theory, projective geometry and combinatorial group theory. All those researching into any aspect of Combinatorics and its applications will find much in these articles of use and interest.

Book Stopping Time Techniques for Analysts and Probabilists

Download or read book Stopping Time Techniques for Analysts and Probabilists written by L. Egghe and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1984-09-27 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers convergence of adapted sequences of real and Banach space-valued integrable functions, emphasizing the use of stopping time techniques. Not only are highly specialized results given, but also elementary applications of these results. The book starts by discussing the convergence theory of martingales and sub-( or super-) martingales with values in a Banach space with or without the Radon-Nikodym property. Several inequalities which are of use in the study of the convergence of more general adapted sequence such as (uniform) amarts, mils and pramarts are proved and sub- and superpramarts are discussed and applied to the convergence of pramarts. Most of the results have a strong relationship with (or in fact are characterizations of) topological or geometrical properties of Banach spaces. The book will interest research and graduate students in probability theory, functional analysis and measure theory, as well as proving a useful textbook for specialized courses on martingale theory.
