Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the California Academy of Sciences, 1903, Vol. 1 IN MY inaugural dissertation1 certain quadratic trans formations played an important part. Their generation by the combination of conjugate imaginary collineations (in point co-ordinates) was a novelty that seemed capable of a generalization which I sought in vain at that time. It was also desirable to invert the transformations. This inversion was accomplished for some of the transformations, but not for all, although it was evident that they were really bira tional. I had always intended to investigate the inversion of quadratic transformations in general, but a press of other work had caused the subject to be abandoned until very recently, when Dr. Dickson's interesting construction2 of a special transformation recalled my interest to this field. The main object of this paper was to have been the in version of the general quadratic transformation, which is accordingly presented at the Close of the paper. But the method of treatment led me also to the generalization men tioned above, furnishing a simple geometrical construction for the general transformation, and this is to be found in 2. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the California Academy of Natural Sciences, 1858-1862, Vol. 2 The question is often mooted in our courts, whether the age of a tree can be determined with any degree of accuracy by referring to the rings or growth of the wood. F rom the observations I have made during a period of twenty years, or more, I have long since been convinced, that as a. General thing each ring or growth of the timber represented a year of the existence of the tree. The specimen presented this evening, goes to substantiate more clearly, my previous conclusions. Book The Sciences of the Artificial reissue of the third edition with a new introduction by John Laird

Download or read book The Sciences of the Artificial reissue of the third edition with a new introduction by John Laird written by Herbert A. Simon and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-08-13 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herbert Simon's classic work on artificial intelligence in the expanded and updated third edition from 1996, with a new introduction by John E. Laird. Herbert Simon's classic and influential The Sciences of the Artificial declares definitively that there can be a science not only of natural phenomena but also of what is artificial. Exploring the commonalities of artificial systems, including economic systems, the business firm, artificial intelligence, complex engineering projects, and social plans, Simon argues that designed systems are a valid field of study, and he proposes a science of design. For this third edition, originally published in 1996, Simon added new material that takes into account advances in cognitive psychology and the science of design while confirming and extending the book's basic thesis: that a physical symbol system has the necessary and sufficient means for intelligent action. Simon won the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1978 for his research into the decision-making process within economic organizations and the Turing Award (considered by some the computer science equivalent to the Nobel) with Allen Newell in 1975 for contributions to artificial intelligence, the psychology of human cognition, and list processing. The Sciences of the Artificial distills the essence of Simon's thought accessibly and coherently. This reissue of the third edition makes a pioneering work available to a new audience.

Book Neuropsychoanalysis in practice

Download or read book Neuropsychoanalysis in practice written by Georg Northoff and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-06-23 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the Ego nothing but our brain? Are our mental and psychological states nothing but neuronal states of our brain? Though Sigmund Freud rejected a neuroscientific foundation for psychoanalysis, recent knowledge in neuroscience has provided novel insights into the brain and its neuronal mechanisms. This has also shed light on how the brain itself contributes to the differentiation between neuronal and psychological states. In Neuropsychoanalysis in Practice , Georg Northoff discusses the various neuronal mechanisms that may enable the transformation of neuronal into psychological states, looking at how these processes are altered in psychiatric disorders like depression and schizophrenia. He focuses specifically on how the brain is organized and how this organization enables the brain to differentiate between neuronal and psychodynamic states, that is, the brain and the psyche. This leads him to discuss not only empirical issues but also conceptual problems, for instance, the concept of the brain. Neuropsychoanalysis in Practice applies these concepts and mechanisms to explain the various symptoms observed in psychiatric disorders such as depression and schizophrenia. In addition to the empirical issues, he also discusses various conceptual and methodological issues that are relevant in linking neuroscience and psychoanalysis, developing a novel transdisciplinary framework for linking neuroscience, psychoanalysis and philosophy. This highly original new book will help foster new dialogues between neuroscience, psychoanalysis, and philosophy, and will be fascinating reading for anyone in these disciplines.
