Book New Methods for the Study of Biomolecular Complexes

Download or read book New Methods for the Study of Biomolecular Complexes written by W. Ens and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-02-28 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A NATO Advanced Research Workshop entitled New Methods for the Study of Molecular Aggregates was held at Tbe Lodge at Kananaskis Village, Alberta, Canada from 16 -20 June 1996. In fact the meeting was entirely concerned with the problem of analyzing biomolecular complexes, so the title of these proceedings has been altered to give a more precise description of the content. Tbe workshop was hosted by the time-of-flight group of the Department of Physics at the University of Manitoba, and was attended by 64 participants from around the world. '!\venty-one invited talks were given and 27 papers were presented as posters. Of the 48 contributions, 22 papers (12 orals, 10 posters) are included in these proceedings. Tbe subject of the conference was the investigation of noncovalent biomolecular complexes, with particular focus on the application of mass spectrometry to their characterization. '!\vo new ionization techniques introduced in the late 1980s, electrospray ionization (ES I) and matrix-assisted laser desorptionlionization (MALDI), resulted in a breakthrough in mass spectrometry, enabling its use in molecular weight and primary structure determination of biopolymers larger than 100 kDa. Recently it has been discovered that ESI mass spectrometry mayaiso be used to characterize complexes containing noncovalent interactions, thus opening new perspectives for supramolecular chemistry. ESI mass spectrometry has the advantage that the sampie is introduced from a homogenous solution which can be maintained at near physiological conditions of pR, concentration, and temperature.

Book A Handbook of Derivatives for Mass Spectrometry

Download or read book A Handbook of Derivatives for Mass Spectrometry written by Vladimir Zaikin and published by IM Publications. This book was released on 2009 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical derivatisation of functional groups has proved popular since the beginning of organic mass spectrometry as a means to enhance the stability and volatility of the analytes as well as facilitating structure elucidation. This book provides comprehensive information on the wide range of derivatisation methods. Each chapter looks at a particular area of derivatisation and includes extensive references to the literature for further research where necessary. There are nearly 1800 references, which, as well as full bibliographic information, include chapter/paper titles where appropriate and Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) to allow easy retrieval of the online version of the referenced publication. The emergence of atmospheric pressure ionisation and other soft ionisation techniques has not diminished the interest in such chemical techniques, as witnessed by the many chemical tags used in quantitative proteomics (Chapter 9). The last two chapters, a substantial part of the book, deal with derivatisation for use with soft ionisation of both small and large molecules. Chapters Silylation Acylation Alkylation (Arylation) Cyclic derivatives Monofunctional compounds Polyfunctional compounds On-line derivatisation/degradation Soft ionisation—small molecules Soft ionisation—large molecules

Book Mass Spectrometry of Proteins and Peptides

Download or read book Mass Spectrometry of Proteins and Peptides written by John R. Chapman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-05 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little more than three years down the line and I am already writing the Preface to a second volume to follow Protein and Peptide Analysis by Mass . What has happened in between these times to make this second venture worthwhile? New types of mass spectrometric instrumentation have appeared so that new techniques have become possible and existing techniques have become much more feasible. More particularly, however, the newer ionization te- niques, introduced for the analysis of high molecular weight materials, have now been thoroughly used and studied. As a result, there has been an en- mous improvement in the associated sample handling technology so that these methods are now routinely applied to much smaller sample amounts as well as to more intractable samples. Again, this particular community of mass spectrometry users has both increased in number and diversified. And, riding this wave of acceptance, leaders in the field have set their sights on more complex problems: molecular interaction, ion structures, quantitation, and kinetics are just a few of the newer areas reported in Mass Spectrometry of Proteins and Peptides. As with the first volume, one purpose of this collection, Mass Spectr- etry of Proteins and Peptides, is to show the reader what can be done by the application of mass spectrometry, and perhaps even to encourage the reader to venture down new paths.

Book Human Genome Analysis

    Book Details:
  • Author : Manuel Hallen
  • Publisher : IOS Press
  • Release : 1998
  • ISBN : 9789051994094
  • Pages : 496 pages

Download or read book Human Genome Analysis written by Manuel Hallen and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rationale for co-ordinated activities related to human genome analysis is based on its potential contribution to the understanding of the processes underlying human disease, hence to improve diagnostics, treatment and eventually disease prevention. The basic idea on how best to meet this objective at a European level was through the collective improvement of research infrastructure, broader availability of resources and co-operation of leading research groups in Europe. The emphasis of the European programmes was placed on the provision of an adequate research infrastructure, including resource centres, to the improvement in the mapping facilities and information management. In this context, a paradigm of successful international collaboration was the European Human Genetic Linkage Mapping Project (EUROGEM), and the Single Chromosome Workshops (SCWs), monitored by the Human Genome Organisation (HUGO). This book contains the final reports of all 41 research projects funded under the BIOMED 1 programme during the period 1993 to 1997.

Book Proteomics in Functional Genomics

Download or read book Proteomics in Functional Genomics written by P. Jolles and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-03-11 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wealth of information has accumulated over the last few years on the human genome. The new insights have completely changed the focus of protein analysis. It is no longer time-consuming analysis of unknown products, but rather selective identifications of individual forms, modifications and processings, and overall analysis of global protein outputs from cells and tissues in health and disease. This book gears to the rising need of sensitive, accurate, and fast separation and identification techniques in proteomics. It discusses current methodologies of modern protein analysis, from isolation and sample preparation, over analysis and identification, to final characterization. Several evaluations concentrate on the now productive approaches of two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry, but alternative methods and further perspectives are also outlined. The book includes an overlook over current databases to connect protein analysis data with all available information,...
