Book Biological Robustness

Download or read book Biological Robustness written by Marta Bertolaso and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reviews examples and notions of robustness at several levels of biological organization. It tackles many philosophical and conceptual issues and casts an outlook on the future challenges of robustness studies in the context of a practice-oriented philosophy of science. The focus of discussion is on concrete case studies. These highlight the necessity of a level-dependent description of robust biological behaviors.Experts from the neurosciences, biochemistry, ecology, biology, and the history and the philosophy of life sciences provide a multiplex perspective on the topic. Contributions span from protein folding, to cell-level robustness, to organismal and developmental robustness, to sensorimotor systems, up to the robustness of ecological systems.Several chapters detail neurobiological case-studies. The brain, the poster child of plasticity in biology, offers multiple examples of robustness. Neurobiology explores the importance of temporal organization and multiscalarity in making this robustness-with-plasticity possible. The discussion also includes structures well beyond the brain, such as muscles and the complex feedback loops involved in the peculiar robustness of music perception. Overall, the volume grounds general reflections upon concrete case studies, opening to all the life sciences but also to non-biological and bio-inspired fields such as post-modern engineering. It will appeal to researchers, students, as well as non-expert readers.

Book Passive Network Synthesis An Approach to Classification

Download or read book Passive Network Synthesis An Approach to Classification written by Alessandro Morelli and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2019-05-21 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A resurgence of interest in network synthesis in the last decade, motivated in part by the introduction of the inerter, has led to the need for a better understanding of the most economical way to realize a given passive impedance. This monograph outlines the main contributions to the field of passive network synthesis and presents new research into the enumerative approach and the classification of networks of restricted complexity. Passive Network Synthesis: An Approach to Classification serves as both an ideal introduction to the topic and a definitive treatment of the Ladenheim catalogue. In particular, the authors provide a new analysis and classification of the Ladenheim catalogue, building on recent work, to obtain an improved understanding of the structure and realization power of the class within the biquadratic positive-real functions. This book is intended for researchers in systems and control, real algebraic geometry, electrical and mechanical networks, and dynamics and vibration.

Book Adaptive Backstepping Control of Uncertain Systems with Actuator Failures Subsystem Interactions and Nonsmooth Nonlinearities

Download or read book Adaptive Backstepping Control of Uncertain Systems with Actuator Failures Subsystem Interactions and Nonsmooth Nonlinearities written by Wei Wang and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In practice, actuators often undergo failures and various factors influence its effectiveness. Also due to the increasing complexity of large-scale systems, subsystems are often interconnected, whereas the interactions between any two subsystems are difficult to deal with. This book details a series of new methodologies of designing and analyzing adaptive backstepping control systems involving treatment on actuator failures, subsystem interactions and nonsmooth nonlinearities. Moreover, it discusses some interesting open issues in adaptive failure accommodation, decentralized adaptive control and distributed adaptive coordinated control.

Book Discrete Mechanics Geometric Integration and Lie Butcher Series

Download or read book Discrete Mechanics Geometric Integration and Lie Butcher Series written by Kurusch Ebrahimi-Fard and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-05 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume resulted from presentations given at the international “Brainstorming Workshop on New Developments in Discrete Mechanics, Geometric Integration and Lie–Butcher Series”, that took place at the Instituto de Ciencias Matemáticas (ICMAT) in Madrid, Spain. It combines overview and research articles on recent and ongoing developments, as well as new research directions. Why geometric numerical integration? In their article of the same title Arieh Iserles and Reinout Quispel, two renowned experts in numerical analysis of differential equations, provide a compelling answer to this question. After this introductory chapter a collection of high-quality research articles aim at exploring recent and ongoing developments, as well as new research directions in the areas of geometric integration methods for differential equations, nonlinear systems interconnections, and discrete mechanics. One of the highlights is the unfolding of modern algebraic and combinatorial structures common to those topics, which give rise to fruitful interactions between theoretical as well as applied and computational perspectives. The volume is aimed at researchers and graduate students interested in theoretical and computational problems in geometric integration theory, nonlinear control theory, and discrete mechanics.

Book Input to State Stability for PDEs

Download or read book Input to State Stability for PDEs written by Iasson Karafyllis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-07 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book lays the foundation for the study of input-to-state stability (ISS) of partial differential equations (PDEs) predominantly of two classes—parabolic and hyperbolic. This foundation consists of new PDE-specific tools. In addition to developing ISS theorems, equipped with gain estimates with respect to external disturbances, the authors develop small-gain stability theorems for systems involving PDEs. A variety of system combinations are considered: PDEs (of either class) with static maps; PDEs (again, of either class) with ODEs; PDEs of the same class (parabolic with parabolic and hyperbolic with hyperbolic); and feedback loops of PDEs of different classes (parabolic with hyperbolic). In addition to stability results (including ISS), the text develops existence and uniqueness theory for all systems that are considered. Many of these results answer for the first time the existence and uniqueness problems for many problems that have dominated the PDE control literature of the last two decades, including—for PDEs that include non-local terms—backstepping control designs which result in non-local boundary conditions. Input-to-State Stability for PDEs will interest applied mathematicians and control specialists researching PDEs either as graduate students or full-time academics. It also contains a large number of applications that are at the core of many scientific disciplines and so will be of importance for researchers in physics, engineering, biology, social systems and others.
