Book Parallel Processing Algorithms For GIS

Download or read book Parallel Processing Algorithms For GIS written by Richard Healey and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-11-30 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last fifteen years GIS has become a fully-fledged technology, deployed across a range of application areas. However, although computer advances in performance appear to continue unhindered, data volumes and the growing sophistication of analysis procedures mean that performance will increasingly become a serious concern in GIS. Parallel computing offers a potential solution. However, traditional algorithms may not run effectively in a parallel environment, so utilization of parallel technology is not entirely straightforward. This groundbreaking book examines some of the current strategies facing scientists and engineers at this crucial interface of parallel computing and GIS.; The book begins with an introduction to the concepts, terminology and techniques of parallel processing, with particular reference to GIS. High level programming paradigms and software engineering issues underlying parallel software developments are considered and emphasis is given to designing modular reusable software libraries. The book continues with problems in designing parallel software for GIS applications, potential vector and raster data structures and details the algorithmic design for some major GIS operations. An implementation case study is included, based around a raster generalization problem, which illustrates some of the principles involved. Subsequent chapters review progress in parallel database technology in a GIS environment and the use of parallel techniques in various application areas, dealing with both algorithmic and implementation issues.; "Parallel Processing Algorithms for GIS" should be a useful text for a new generation of GIS professionals whose principal concern is the challenge of embracing major computer performance enhancements via parallel computing. Similarly, it should be an important volume for parallel computing professionals who are increasingly aware that GIS offers a major application domain for their technology.

Book Information Logistics Decentralized Approaches of Information Allocation in Information Exchange Networks

Download or read book Information Logistics Decentralized Approaches of Information Allocation in Information Exchange Networks written by Sven Grolik and published by ibidem-Verlag / ibidem Press. This book was released on 2012-02-24 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of modern planning and optimization systems for process synchronization in value networks requires the optimal information exchange between the entities involved. The central focus of Sven Grolik's study is the development of efficient mechanisms for the coordination of information allocation by the example of interconnected transportation marketplaces. Unlike traditional information allocation algorithms, the algorithms developed in his analysis are based on update mechanisms which maintain a weak consistency of replicated information in the network. Sven Grolik shows that these algorithms enable savings concerning the update costs as well as increase the performance within the network, but at the same time guarantee compliance with quality of service levels concerning the currency of information. The focus of this work is the development of decentralized, online algorithms which make a logically distributed computation possible on the basis of local information. The development of these innovative algorithms is based on approaches of multi-agent system theory as well as distributed simulated annealing techniques.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impending advent of GSM in the early 1990s triggered massive investment that revolutionised the capability of DSP technology. A decade later, the vastly increased processing requirements and potential market of 3G has triggered a similar revolution, with a host of start-up companies claiming revolutionary technologies hoping to challenge and displace incumbent suppliers. This book, with contributions from today's major players and leading start-ups, comprehensively describes both the new approaches and the responses of the incumbents, with detailed descriptions of the design philosophy, architecture, technology maturity and software support. Analysis of SDR baseband processing requirements of cellular handsets and basestations 3G handset baseband - ASIC, DSP, parallel processing, ACM and customised programmable architectures 3G basestation baseband - DSP (including co-processors), FPGA-based approaches, reconfigurable and parallel architectures Architecture optimisation to match 3G air interface and application algorithms Evolution of existing DSP, ASIC & FPGA solutions Assessment of the architectural approaches and the implications of the trends. An essential resource for the 3G product designer, who needs to understand immediate design options within a wider context of future product roadmaps, the book will also benefit researchers and commercial managers who need to understand this rapid evolution of baseband signal processing and its industry impact.
