Book Spectroscopy and Modeling of Biomolecular Building Blocks

Download or read book Spectroscopy and Modeling of Biomolecular Building Blocks written by Jean-Pierre Schermann and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2007-10-16 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spectroscopy and Modeling of Biomolecular Building Blocks presents an overview of recent advances in the intertwining of the following research fields: photon and electron spectroscopy, quantum chemistry, modelling and mass-spectrometry. The coupling of these disciplines offers a new point of view to the understanding of isolated elementary building blocks of biomolecules and their assemblies. It allows the unambiguous separation between intrinsic properties of biomolecular systems and those induced by the presence of their environment. The first chapters provide background in modelling (I), frequency-resolved spectroscopy using microwave, infrared and UV photons, time-resolved spectroscopy in the femtosecond domain and energy-resolved electron spectroscopy (II) and production of gas-phase neutral and ionic biomolecular species, mass-spectrometry, ion mobility and BIRD techniques (III). Chapter IV is devoted to case studies of gas-phase experimental investigations coupled to quantum or classical calculations. The topics are structural studies of nucleobases and oligonucleotides, peptides and proteins, sugars; neuromolecules; non-covalent complexes; chiral systems, interactions of low-energy electrons with biomolecules in the radiation chemistry context and very large gas-phase biomolecular systems. The fifth chapter concerns the link between gas-phase and liquid-phase. Different treatments of solvation are illustrated through examples pointing out the influence of progressive addition of water molecules upon properties of nucleobases, peptides, sugars and neuromolecules. Offer a new perspective to the understanding of isolated elementary building blocks of bio molecules Includes case studies of experimental investigations coupled to quantum or classical calculations

Book Dynamic Force Spectroscopy and Biomolecular Recognition

Download or read book Dynamic Force Spectroscopy and Biomolecular Recognition written by Anna Rita Bizzarri and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-01-25 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular recognition, also known as biorecognition, is the heart of all biological interactions. Originating from protein stretching experiments, dynamic force spectroscopy (DFS) allows for the extraction of detailed information on the unbinding process of biomolecular complexes. It is becoming progressively more important in biochemical studies and is finding wider applications in areas such as biophysics and polymer science. In six chapters, Dynamic Force Spectroscopy and Biomolecular Recognition covers the most recent ideas and advances in the field of DFS applied to biorecognition: Chapter 1: Reviews the basic and novel aspects of biorecognition and discusses the emerging capabilities of single-molecule techniques to disclose kinetic properties and molecular mechanisms usually hidden in bulk measurements Chapter 2: Describes the basic principle of atomic force microsocopy (AFM) and DFS, with particular attention to instrumental and theoretical aspects more strictly related to the study of biomolecules Chapter 3: Overviews the theoretical background in which experimental data taken in nonequilibrum measurements of biomolecular unbinding forces are extrapolated to equilibrium conditions Chapter 4: Reviews the most common and efficient strategies adopted in DFS experiments to immobilize the interacting biomolecules to the AFM tip and to the substrate Chapter 5: Presents and discusses the most representative aspects related to the analysis of DFS data and the challenges of integrating well-defined criteria to calibrate data in automatic routinary procedures Chapter 6: Overviews the most relevant DFS applications to study biorecognition processes, including the biotin/avidin pair, and selected results on various biological complexes, including antigen/antibody, proteins/DNA, and complexes involved in adhesion processes Chapter 7: Summarizes the main results obtained by DFS applied to study biorecognition processes with forthcoming theoretical and experimental advances Although DFS is a widespread, worldwide technique, no books focused on this subject have been available until now. Dynamic Force Spectroscopy and Biomolecular Recognition provides the state of the art of experimental data analysis and theoretical procedures, making it a useful tool for researchers applying DFS to study biorecognition processes.

Book Spectroscopy of Biological Molecules

Download or read book Spectroscopy of Biological Molecules written by Maria Paula Marques and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents contributions from some of the leading experts in spectroscopic techniques including infrared, Raman, NMR, fluorescence and Circular Dichroism spectroscopy. Structural characterization of biomolecules, cells, tissues and whole organisms are amongst the topics that were covered by these experts at the 14th European Conference on Spectroscopy of Biological Molecules (ECSBM2011), held at the University of Coimbra, Portugal, from 29th August to 3rd September 2011, of which this book contains the papers. The book would be particularly valuable for those interested in vibrational spectroscopy and imaging of cells and tissues, applications of spectroscopy in biotechnology, single cell studies and microbial characterization. It highlights the potential of spectroscopy and imaging in medical diagnosis and screening, and discusses issues related to methodology, including data acquisition, analysis and processing, that would be valuable for scientists who are new to the field. The book would be an important reference source for scientists in academia and industry as well as early stage researchers such as graduate students and post-doctoral researchers.
