This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Food-Producing Systems for Arid and Semiarid Lands: Part B contains the proceedings of a symposium on ""Advances in Food-Producing Systems for Arid and Semiarid Lands"" of the International Symposium Series held in Kuwait in April 1980. As a continuation of the proceedings, this compilation contains the last three parts of the symposium and the editor's closing remarks. It specifically talks about the innovative food systems and aquacultural systems in the arid and semi-arid lands. It also addresses the general problems of post-harvest losses in food of plant origin and the possibilities to reduce these losses. The presented papers bring renewed vitality to the hope that appropriate and directed exploitation of various technologies can evolve developable industries for arid and semiarid lands.

This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1988. There are many excellent texts on water supply and irrigation engineering, irrigation economics, agricultural development and the problems which often plague such efforts. Few syntheses of such writings have been made, despite a clear need for them from people interested in water resources and agricultural development: students of geography, economics, development studies and agricultural management, administrators, planners and aid agency staff. This book attempts to provide a broad interdisciplinary introduction for such people.

Book Biosalinity in Action Bioproduction with Saline Water

Download or read book Biosalinity in Action Bioproduction with Saline Water written by D. Pasternak and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1985-11-30 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, scientists and laymen have regarded salinity as a hazar dous, detrimental phenomenon. This negative view was a principal reason for the lack of agricultural development of most arid and semi arid zones of the world where the major sources of water for biological production are saline. The late Hugo Boyko was probably the first scientist in recent times to challenge this commonly held, pessimistic view of salinity. His research in Israel indicated that many plants can be irrigated with saline water, even at seawater strength, if they are in sandy soil - a technique that could open much barren land to agriculture. This new, even radical, approach to salinity was clearly enunciated in the book he edited and most appropriately entitled 'Salinity and Aridity: New Approaches to Old Problems' (1966). A decade later, three members of the United States National Science Foundation (NSF), Lewis Mayfield, James Aller and Oskar Zaborsky, formulated the 'Biosaline Concept'; namely, that poor soils, high solar insolation and saline water, which prevail in arid lands, should be viewed as useful resources rather than as disadvantages, and that these resources can be used for non-traditional production of food, fuels and chemicals. The First International Workshop on Biosaline Research was con vened at Kiawah Island, South Carolina, in 1977 by A. San Pietro.

Book Problems of the Agricultural Development of Less Favoured Areas in Europe

Download or read book Problems of the Agricultural Development of Less Favoured Areas in Europe written by Sam Stuart and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-05-03 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problems of the Agricultural Development of Less-Favoured Areas in Europe is a collection of papers from a symposium of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and Food and Agriculture Organization held in Geneva on May 22-26, 1978. This collection of papers covers European countries with areas where agricultural development is limited. This book defines less-favored agricultural areas as those places where there is limited agricultural development, of different sizes and economic and social importance. These areas are also defined as suffering serious deterioration of the natural environment and of economic and social activities. This book then presents country reports covering problem areas in Austria, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Finland, France, and Germany. In reviewing each of these countries, and other countries as well, the text presents each government's objectives concerning the rural areas, the actual strategies and policies pursued by the state, and the problems encountered when implementing these policies. This text also gives the methodologies used in evaluating these programs. This book can prove useful for government officials and ministries dealing with the agricultural sector, heads of volunteer organizations dealing with countryside development, and academicians in political science and developmental planning.

Book Opportunities use and transfer of systems research methods in agriculture to developing countries

Download or read book Opportunities use and transfer of systems research methods in agriculture to developing countries written by Goldsworthy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 1993, ISNAR, in collaboration with International Consortium for Application of Systems Approaches, organized a three-day workshop on systems approaches and modelling for agricultural development. Sponsored by the Dutch Ministry for Development Cooperation, the workshop was attended by participants from 12 national agricultural research systems (NARS), nine international agricul tural research centers (lARCs), and five advanced research organizations (AROs). Although application of systems approaches in agricultural research and resource management is a rather new field, there is already increasing demand for implemen tation of these approaches. This will require a critical mass of specialists in the NARS and IARCs. Before this critical mass can be obtained, however, the experience that has been gained in this area needs to be evaluated, further possibilities need to be explored, and new objectives and targets need to be set. This book, which contains the papers presented at the workshop, assesses the state of the art of systems approaches in agricultural research, resource management, and rural planning. It also gives an impression of the evolution of this interdisciplinary field and its use in national and international research centers. Another, less tangible, outcome of the workshop was its contribution toward strengthening the network of NARS, lARCs, and AROs. It gave participants and organizers a chance to develop contacts, and provided an opportunity to make the first proposals for collaborative programs. Special thanks are due to Peter Goldsworthy and Luc Boerboom for their crucial role in making the workshop a success in this regard.

Book Ecophysiology Abiotic Stress Responses and Utilization of Halophytes

Download or read book Ecophysiology Abiotic Stress Responses and Utilization of Halophytes written by Mirza Hasanuzzaman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-12 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Halophytes are those plant species that can tolerate high salt concentrations. There are diversified species of halophytes suited for growth in various saline regions around the world, e.g. coastal saline soil, soils of mangrove forests, wetlands, marshlands, lands of arid and semiarid regions, and agricultural fields. These plants can be grown in soil and water containing high salt concentrations and unsuitable for conventional crops, and can be good sources of food, fuel, fodder, fiber, essential oils, and medicine. Moreover, halophytes can be exploited as significant and major plant species for the desalination and restoration of saline soils, as well as phytoremediation. This book highlights recent advances in exploring the unique features of halophytes and their potential uses in our changing environment.
