Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about moving from the conceptual to practical applications that impact the day-to-day teaching and learning processes. Skoglund and Ness give School leaders all the tools that are necessary to change the culture of a school, improve teacher performance, and elevate student achievement. Each component of the process is clearly addressed. The authors provide critical documents, such as an academic mission, core commitments, instructional calendars, common assessments, data charts, error analysis forms, and meeting agendas. The Continuous Improvement System differs from other improvement efforts in that it views the school as an integrated whole and not a group of parts that are to be independently addressed. This common-sense approach has been welcomed by administrators and teachers alike.

Book Assessing Conditions to Enhance Educational Effectiveness

Download or read book Assessing Conditions to Enhance Educational Effectiveness written by George D. Kuh and published by Jossey-Bass. This book was released on 2005-09-23 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the authors of Student Success in College—the book that describes the policies, programs, and practices of twenty colleges and universities that have created success-oriented campus cultures and learning environments—comes the next-step resource to help an institution assess whether these conditions exist. The authors present the Inventory for Student Engagement and Success (ISES), a self-guided framework for conducting a comprehensive, systematic, institutionwide analysis. The process also can be applied to areas within an institution, such as a school or college within a university, an academic or student affairs division, or a department or program. The ISES includes sets of diagnostic queries that focus on the six properties and conditions common to high-performing schools as well as the five clusters of effective educational practices featured on the National Survey of Student Engagement. Suggestions are offered to illustrate how the information generated from the ISES process can be used for various purposes including accreditation self-studies, program reviews, staff development, faculty and governing board retreats, and strategic planning.

Book Leading Assessment for Student Success

Download or read book Leading Assessment for Student Success written by Rosie Phillips Bingham and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While both committed to providing effective programs and services that help students succeed in college and beyond, and aware of the increasing demands from internal and external stakeholders that every dollar spent benefits students and contributes to the mission of higher education, student affairs professionals have little guidance about how to create and sustain the culture of assessment to achieve these goals. This book provides the practical directions for embedding assessment in the fabric of practice. The authors in this volume – all experienced senior level leaders who have established programs that exemplify a culture of evidence-based practice – identify and explicate ten tenets of practice for leading and implementing a culture of change committed to student learning and sound assessment methods. Grounded in assessment literature, the tenets are:1. Understand the Why of Assessment2. Commit to Student Learning as a Primary Focus3. Lay the Foundation for a Sustainable Assessment Culture4. Develop Strategies to Engage Staff in a Commitment to Assessment5. Provide Recognition and Accountability Structures6. Reaffirm the Importance of Assessment to Anchor Cultural Change 7. Develop Sound Assessment Plans8. Connect Assessment Plans to Divisional and Institutional Strategic Plans9. Determine the Appropriate Methods for Assessing Programs and Services10. Market Data to Leverage Buy-in, and Promote Utility to the Campus Community The basic premise of this book is that the Senior Student Affairs Officer must be the primary leader and spokesperson for this effort, both in setting the tone and keeping all members of the team accountable for implementation and the commitment of their units. The book opens with an overview of history and purpose and language of assessment, relates it to the educational mission of student affairs, and outlines the four elements necessary to start a culture of assessment: commitment, connection, consistency, and communication. In addressing the role of the Senior Student Affairs Officer, subsequent chapters address the process of gaining “buy-in” and the importance understanding the unique culture of the institution; provide guidance on creating an environment of trust, accountability, and transparency; and describe how to lay the foundations to sustainability through consistency and strong interpersonal and collaborative relationships among the staff. The book concludes by summarizing the essential assessment practices and tools that senior leaders need to be aware of – providing examples of assessment cycle templates that can be applied across departments – and outlining how to establish a strategic plan aligned with institutional mission that is linear, predictable and consistent, and aligned with institutional mission; as well as communicating results both externally and internally for the purposes of improvement.

Book Evaluating Student Success Interventions Principles and Practices of Student Success

Download or read book Evaluating Student Success Interventions Principles and Practices of Student Success written by Rigoberto J. Rincones-Gomez and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Achieving the Dream colleges engage in a process of institutional improvement to increase student success. A central component of this process is engaging internal and external stakeholders to help develop and implement interventions or changes in programs and services that improve student success. To determine whether these interventions do indeed improve student outcomes, and what changes and refinements should be made to produce further improvements, colleges need to evaluate their interventions. Achieving the Dream institutions are expected to develop plans for evaluating student success interventions before they begin their implementation. These plans should specify the collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data that will form the basis of the evaluation. The plans should also indicate how the results of the evaluation will be used to improve the effectiveness of the interventions. Having the capacity to effectively evaluate student success interventions is necessary for meeting the expectations of funders, accreditation agencies, students, policy makers, and the public. It is essential for continuously improving the impact of programs and services on student learning and success. This guide is designed to help colleges plan and conduct effective evaluations of their student success interventions. A list of resources is included. (Contains 6 figures.).

Book Proceedings of the 10th Focus Conference TFC 2023

Download or read book Proceedings of the 10th Focus Conference TFC 2023 written by Manyane Makua and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-05 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an open access book. The 2023 Focus Conference will focus on Goal Four (Quality Education) of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SGD). Goal Four is seized with providing “equal access for all women and men to affordable and quality technical, vocational and tertiary education including university.” Quality education, in this context, means the ability to function, provide and derive value in society. The theme of the conference is therefore coined as “The Role of Higher Education in the Attainment of Sustainable Quality Education.” Through this theme, the conference will provide a space for participants to share practical knowledge, experiences, and possible solutions to the myriad of problems that confront the higher education sector. Universities are often thought of as ivory towers far removed from the realities that confront global societies. To compound this, higher education is increasingly being questioned for its relevance in providing practical and innovative solutions to existing societal problems. Such questions often navigate around the relevance of the academic programmes being offered, curriculum, the capacity of staff, employability of graduates, and generally the ability of these institutions to understand why they exist. Indeed, higher education’s role in creating a sustainable future will presumably take on greater importance as the world continues to become increasingly globalised and interdependent.

Book Increasing Student Success in Developmental Mathematics

Download or read book Increasing Student Success in Developmental Mathematics written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-11-18 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Board on Science Education and the Board on Mathematical Sciences and Analytics of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened the Workshop on Increasing Student Success in Developmental Mathematics on March 18-19, 2019. The Workshop explored how to best support all students in postsecondary mathematics, with particular attention to students who are unsuccessful in developmental mathematics and with an eye toward issues of access to promising reforms and equitable learning environments. The two-day workshop was designed to bring together a variety of stakeholders, including experts who have developed and/or implemented new initiatives to improve the mathematics education experience for students. The overarching goal of the workshop was to take stock of the mathematics education community's progress in this domain. Participants examined the data on students who are well-served by new reform structures in developmental mathematics and discussed various cohorts of students who are not currently well served - those who even with access to reforms do not succeed and those who do not have access to a reform due to differential access constraints. Throughout the workshop, participants also explored promising approaches to bolstering student outcomes in mathematics, focusing especially on research and data that demonstrate the success of these approaches; deliberated and discussed barriers and opportunities for effectively serving all students; and outlined some key directions of inquiry intended to address the prevailing research and data needs in the field. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussion of the workshop.
