Book Procedures for the Design of Thermal Protection Systems for Maneuverable Re entry Vehicles

Download or read book Procedures for the Design of Thermal Protection Systems for Maneuverable Re entry Vehicles written by DONALD. TURRENTINE and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atmospheric re-entry of earth-orbital, hypersonic glide vehicles creates thermal problems. The heat affects not only the materials and construction of the airframe but also the crew and various subsystems of the vehicle. Successful solution of these problems depends upon the development of an effective thermal protective concept, which will also give the designer some latitude in his design philosophy. The role of the protective system is to significantly attenuate the influx of heat that is aerodynamically generated within the surrounding boundary layer. Attenuation is accomplished by combining external radiation shielding elements with backup insulation materials and an appropriate cooling system. Analytical procedures are presented for determining significant system parameters by transforming the differential heat conduction or diffusion equation into an algebraic expression by employing the calculus of finite differences. The adaptation of the resulting equation to digital computer programming is discussed, and numerical results are presented to indicate systems of minimum weight. (Author).

Book Integrated Ablative and Radiative Heat Shield Panels and Leading Edges for High L D Reentry Vehicles

Download or read book Integrated Ablative and Radiative Heat Shield Panels and Leading Edges for High L D Reentry Vehicles written by Ralph W. Kiger and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This program analytically and experimentally investigates the design and thermostructural performance of integrated ablative/radiative thermal protection systems in two phases: CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT AND FULL-SCALE PANEL DEVELOPMENT. In Phase I, the program includes the investigation, analysis, and test of sub-scale specimens and various design concepts to determine design values for the full-scale panels and leading edges. Phase II covers the design and fabrication of large-scale lower surface ablative panels and leading edges for integration on the AFFDL Hypersonic Aerospace Test Structure (HATS). A vehicle configuration, the FDL-5A, is furnished by the Air Force to serve as a basepoint for the analytical and experimental phases of the program. (Author, modified-PL).

Book Design Methodologies for Space Transportation Systems

Download or read book Design Methodologies for Space Transportation Systems written by Walter Edward Hammond and published by AIAA. This book was released on 2001 with total page 906 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation "Design Methodologies for Space Transportation Systems is a sequel to the author's earlier text, "Space Transportation: A Systems Approach to Analysis and Design. Both texts represent the most comprehensive exposition of the existing knowledge and practice in the design and project management of space transportation systems, and they reflect a wealth of experience by the author with the design and management of space systems. The text discusses new conceptual changes in the design philosophy away from multistage expendable vehicles to winged, reusable launch vehicles and presents an overview of the systems engineering and vehicle design process as well as systems trades and analysis. Individual chapters are devoted to specific disciplines such as aerodynamics, aerothermal analysis, structures, materials, propulsion, flight mechanics and trajectories, avionics and computers, and control systems. The final chapters deal with human factors, payload, launch and mission operations, safety, and mission assurance. The two texts by the author provide a valuable source of information for the space transportation community of designers, operators, and managers. A companion CD-ROM succinctly packages some oversized figures and tables, resources for systems engineering and launch ranges, and a compendium of software programs. The computer programs include the USAF AIRPLANE AND MISSILE DATCOM CODES (with extensive documentation); COSTMODL for software costing; OPGUID launch vehicle trajectory generator; SUPERFLO-a series of 11 programs intended for solving compressible flow problems in ducts and pipes found in industrial facilities; and a wealth of Microsoft Excel spreadsheet programs covering thedisciplines of statistics, vehicle trajectories, propulsion performance, math utilities,

Book Theoretical Modelling of Aeroheating on Sharpened Noses Under Rarefied Gas Effects and Nonequilibrium Real Gas Effects

Download or read book Theoretical Modelling of Aeroheating on Sharpened Noses Under Rarefied Gas Effects and Nonequilibrium Real Gas Effects written by Zhi-Hui Wang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-28 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical Modelling of Aeroheating on Sharpened Noses under Rarefied Gas Effects and Nonequilibrium Real Gas Effects employs a theoretical modeling method to study hypersonic flows and aeroheating on sharpened noses under rarefied gas effects and nonequilibrium real gas effects that are beyond the scope of traditional fluid mechanics. It reveals the nonlinear and nonequilibrium features, discusses the corresponding flow and heat transfer mechanisms, and ultimately establishes an analytical engineering theory framework for hypersonic rarefied and chemical nonequilibrium flows. The original analytical findings presented are not only of great academic significance, but also hold considerable potential for applications in engineering practice. The study explores a viable new approach, beyond the heavily relied-upon numerical methods and empirical formulas, to the present research field, which could be regarded as a successful implementation of the idea and methodology of the engineering sciences.

Book Reentry Systems Environmental Protection resep Program Task 2 High Performance Heat Shields

Download or read book Reentry Systems Environmental Protection resep Program Task 2 High Performance Heat Shields written by W. E. Shannon and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Task 2 is devoted to the development of materials systems intended for use with advanced ballistic reentry vehicles. Materials to be considered will be nonmetallic, reinforced composites of both the homogeneous and graded types, with such materials applied to both nose-tip and heat shield requirements. The program will examine in detail resins, reinforcements, and various techniques for fabricating such materials in composite form. These materials will be characterized in sufficient detail such that systems planners will be provided with adequate information to support the preliminary design of future ballistic reentry systems with regard to material considerations. Task 2 will place primary emphasis upon improving the ablation performance of newly developed composite materials. However, improvement of ablation performance will not be achieved at the expense and/or the neglect of related and desirable characteristics such as weight, strength, fabricability, cost, and observables.
