Book Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition in Latin America and the Caribbean 2020

Download or read book Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition in Latin America and the Caribbean 2020 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-05-19 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that are related to food security and nutrition will not be achieved as long as, in some territories in Latin America and the Caribbean, populations continue to live with malnutrition rates. Economic opportunities in these areas are often limited, public services are scant, and exposure to severe climate events is high. The public policies promoted in the region have had less impact in these historically lagging territories, and there is a pressing need to produce a new agenda of public instruments that address the characteristics of the communities that inhabit them. The full and sustainable development of the territories that are falling behind is not only an obligation in terms of the realization of the rights of their inhabitants; it would also allow these territories to activate their social, economic, environmental and cultural potential, to the benefit of all societies. It is hoped that the 2020 Regional Overview will help to highlight the challenges experienced by the territories with the worst indicators in terms of food and nutrition, and that it will serve to mobilize political commitment and public attention towards those areas that are most highly laggingThe year 2020 will be remembered for many decades as the year of the COVID-19 pandemic. The indicators of the 2030 Agenda that are used in this publication do not yet show the different impacts of COVID-19. However, there are references to the possible implications of the pandemic for the future.

Download or read book The Invisible Poor written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2010-03-01 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Invisible Poor' seeks to raise the profile of the rural poor in Argentina, promote dialogue on rural poverty issues, provide the best currently available information about rural poverty, and offer a basis for discussions on how to expand household survey data collection to rural areas. Most previous work has been based on case studies or one-time surveys in a few provinces and consequently has been of limited use for drawing conclusions about rural conditions overall in Argentina. Largely because of data limitations, profound gaps exist in the understanding of rural poverty in Argentina. As a result, the rural poor have sometimes been neglected in policy discussions. This study does not directly address policy responses. Rather it seeks to provide an analytical basis for understanding the conditions of rural life, with the ultimate goal of helping policy makers improve the welfare of Argentina s rural poor through evidence-based policy.

Book Overview of rural poverty in Latin America and the Caribbean

Download or read book Overview of rural poverty in Latin America and the Caribbean written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-09-12 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Panorama of Rural Poverty in Latin America and the Caribbean 2018, published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), addresses the important challenges faced by the region in developing its rural territories to achieve the targets of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, particularly SDG 1 to end poverty in all its forms everywhere. After many years of progress, poverty and extreme rural poverty in the region have started to increase again. This is worrying news for countries of the region and the international community because, if they do not return to the path of rural poverty reduction, millions of people will be excluded from the opportunity to contribute to the development of their families, communities and countries. The 33 Member States of the United Nations in the region have pledged their commitment to eradicating rural poverty by 2030 and, despite the recent trend, it is still possible to achieve this goal. This report also highlights the persistence of significant gaps between rural and urban areas, which is incompatible with sustainable and equitable development. Of the 169 targets of the Sustainable Development Goals, 132 require actions that must be carried out in rural territories.

Book Rural Progress Rural Decay

Download or read book Rural Progress Rural Decay written by Liisa North and published by Kumarian Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * Profiles Ecuador as a broadly applicable case study to explore grassroots development initiatives * Stresses how macroeconomic conditions must change to achieve equitable development How do rural development programs, especially those run by nongovernmental organizations, contend with the forces of structural adjustment programs and economic liberalization? Rural Progress, Rural Decay asserts that NGOs make little progress in promoting equitable development and "poor people’s entrepreneurship" in an economic and political environment dominated by big business. The editors probe the adverse consequences of neoliberal macroeconomic policies on development in low-income countries. This illuminating study is a necessary read for those interested in local communities in Latin America and other parts of the developing world.
