Book The Second Chance Club

Download or read book The Second Chance Club written by Jason Hardy and published by Simon & Schuster. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A former parole officer shines a bright light on a huge yet hidden part of our justice system through the intertwining stories of seven parolees striving to survive the chaos that awaits them after prison in this illuminating and dramatic book. Prompted by a dead-end retail job and a vague desire to increase the amount of justice in his hometown, Jason Hardy became a parole officer in New Orleans at the worst possible moment. Louisiana’s incarceration rates were the highest in the US and his department’s caseload had just been increased to 220 “offenders” per parole officer, whereas the national average is around 100. Almost immediately, he discovered that the biggest problem with our prison system is what we do—and don’t do—when people get out of prison. Deprived of social support and jobs, these former convicts are often worse off than when they first entered prison and Hardy dramatizes their dilemmas with empathy and grace. He’s given unique access to their lives and a growing recognition of their struggles and takes on his job with the hope that he can change people’s fates—but he quickly learns otherwise. The best Hardy and his colleagues can do is watch out for impending disaster and help clean up the mess left behind. But he finds that some of his charges can muster the miraculous power to save themselves. By following these heroes, he both stokes our hope and fuels our outrage by showing us how most offenders, even those with the best intentions, end up back in prison—or dead—because the system systematically fails them. Our focus should be, he argues, to give offenders the tools they need to re-enter society which is not only humane but also vastly cheaper for taxpayers. As immersive and dramatic as Evicted and as revelatory as The New Jim Crow, The Second Chance Club shows us how to solve the cruelest problems prisons create for offenders and society at large.

Book Parole and Beyond

Download or read book Parole and Beyond written by Ruth Armstrong and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-21 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an assessment of contemporary international knowledge about the experiences of life after release from prison. For over 100 years people leaving prison have been supervised by probation services, but little has been written about how those who are supervised experience this process, or how this process influences experiences post-release. Research suggests that the success or failure of supervision in terms of reoffending may be related to how it is experienced, but little has been written about how supervision interacts with these experiences. Despite this lack of grounded knowledge, post-prison supervision continues to grow internationally. This book addresses issues relating to life after release through providing a vision of contemporary life after prison in different social and economic climates from those who are the subjects of this growing and changing form of penal power. An engaging and timely study, this book will be of particular interest to scholars of criminal justice and punishment.

Book excerpt: Written from an insider's view, this text provides an up-to-date and comprehensive examination of a field that is undergoing significant change. Probation and Parole: Theory and Practice, 12e looks at the history of the field, how it moved from a focus on treatment/rehabilitation and the indeterminate sentence, toward a model based on control/law enforcement and the determinate sentence. It offers a logical, student-friendly approach. Written by a former community corrections professional, the author provides an insider's view on how these changes affected the roles and responsibilities of probation and parole officers. In contrast to competing texts, the author weaves his experience with the practices of probation and parole agencies throughout the United States to provide a realistic, state-of-the-art view of the field. The use of cognitive behavior therapy and motivation interviewing, "broken windows"/community-based supervision, and the importance of evidence-based practice are examined. Book The Probation Officer Investigates

Download or read book The Probation Officer Investigates written by Paul W. Keve and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Probation Officer Investigates was first published in 1960.Paul W. Keve is an outstanding practitioner in the field of probation and parole. From his own experience and observation, he has prepared this guide to help others in an important aspect of their work. He points out: "Each probation officer makes his own contribution to the public's eventual acceptance of a constructive penal philosophy by the high quality of his daily work. If that work is to be truly and consistently rehabilitative, it must be based upon sound diagnosis of each case, and this, of course, is the concern of this book."A major task of probation officers is to investigate offenders before their courts and then to write comprehensive and analytical reports about the offenders, for the use of the court. In this book, Mr. Keve explains the philosophy of the preparation of pre-sentence reports and discusses in specific detail the techniques of preparing these reports in a significant, diagnostic way. He considers the problems of confidentiality, relationships with attorneys, techniques of interviewing, and style and format in the writing of the report. He proposes a form for a standard report, and discusses, separately, each category of material to be included. He reproduces two examples of actual (but disguised) reports in an appendix. The book will be particularly helpful to new probation officers. It will be useful, also, to the more experienced staff members, for inservice training programs, and in academic courses in the correctional field. For judges and attorneys, it provides insight into the philosophy and purposes of the probation report.

Book Prison Probation Or Parole

Download or read book Prison Probation Or Parole written by Paul W. Keve and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written and published about the pressing problems of prison reform, but this book differs from most of the others because it goes more deeply to the heart of the question. The author speaks with the authority of years of experience in the corrections field, yet his analysis and proposals are not only those of an outstanding professional but those of a deeply committed humanist as well. Mr. Keve provides a balanced picture of prison problems, showing in understandable terms what happens to both inmates and staff when they are confined together in a traditional prison. He points out that problems of management, communication, and staff training are especially acute in a typical prison, demonstrating, with examples, the reasons why severe stress and recurring disturbances will always be part of the prison experience as long as the present large security institutions are maintained. He gives special attention to the effects on prison life of parole board decisions, and of recent relevant court decisions. He also discusses the particular problems of women's institutions. The author concludes that because of increased awareness by both courts and prison inmates of prisoner rights, the time is coming shortly when our prisons will be considered virtually inoperable, and new alternatives will have to be developed. He devotes a full chapter to consideration of fifteen concepts or suggestions that could lead to improvement of prisons. In a final chapter he discusses the kinds of programs he thinks must be developed as alternative resources to replace prison sentences for most offenders.
