Book Probability of Fire Occurrence Can Be Predicted Classic Reprint

Download or read book Probability of Fire Occurrence Can Be Predicted Classic Reprint written by John S. Crosby and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Probability of Fire Occurrence Can Be Predicted The percentage relationship between actual and expected fires is independent of year-to-year variations in fire occurrence and so shows how much the factors not included in the meter rating influenced fire occurrence. Since changes in population and area protected have been minor, and activities on the national forest have remained fairly constant, it is reasonable to conclude that the relative decrease in fire occurrence is largely a result of effective fire prevention. The above relationships are based on all causes of fires. Data for a single cause or for a particular prevention program can be analyzed similarly. Weaknesses in the prevention program can be revealed in this way and steps taken to remedy them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Model for Predicting Lightning Fire Ignition in Wildland Fuels Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Model for Predicting Lightning Fire Ignition in Wildland Fuels Classic Reprint written by Donald M. Fuquay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Model for Predicting Lightning Fire Ignition in Wildland Fuels This report, the second of several planned on the topic of lightning-caused fires (see Preface), describes the development and structure of a model for predicting the ignition of Wildland fuels by lightning. The model is both physical and stochastic in structure. The physical processes for ignition of fine woody fuels by lightning are the basis for the model. Stochastic processes are used to generalize site conditions for a large area and the chance occurrence of simultaneous events required for ignition. Book Earth Observation of Wildland Fires in Mediterranean Ecosystems

Download or read book Earth Observation of Wildland Fires in Mediterranean Ecosystems written by Emilio Chuvieco and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-09-25 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wildland fires are becoming one of the most critical environmental factors affecting a wide range of ecosystems worldwide. In Mediterranean ecosystems (including also South-Africa, California, parts of Chile and Australia), wildland fires are recurrent phenomena every summer, following the seasonal drought. As a result of changes in traditional land use practices, and the impact of recent climate warming, fires have more negative impacts in the last years, threatening lives, socio-economic and ecological values. The book describes the ecological context of fires in the Mediterranean ecosystems, and provides methods to observe fire danger conditions and fire impacts using Earth Observation and Geographic Information System technologies.

Book Science And Human Behavior

Download or read book Science And Human Behavior written by B.F Skinner and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-12-18 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The psychology classic—a detailed study of scientific theories of human nature and the possible ways in which human behavior can be predicted and controlled—from one of the most influential behaviorists of the twentieth century and the author of Walden Two. “This is an important book, exceptionally well written, and logically consistent with the basic premise of the unitary nature of science. Many students of society and culture would take violent issue with most of the things that Skinner has to say, but even those who disagree most will find this a stimulating book.” —Samuel M. Strong, The American Journal of Sociology “This is a remarkable book—remarkable in that it presents a strong, consistent, and all but exhaustive case for a natural science of human behavior…It ought to be…valuable for those whose preferences lie with, as well as those whose preferences stand against, a behavioristic approach to human activity.” —Harry Prosch, Ethics

Book Stumbling on Happiness

Download or read book Stumbling on Happiness written by Daniel Gilbert and published by Vintage Canada. This book was released on 2009-02-24 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A smart and funny book by a prominent Harvard psychologist, which uses groundbreaking research and (often hilarious) anecdotes to show us why we’re so lousy at predicting what will make us happy – and what we can do about it. Most of us spend our lives steering ourselves toward the best of all possible futures, only to find that tomorrow rarely turns out as we had expected. Why? As Harvard psychologist Daniel Gilbert explains, when people try to imagine what the future will hold, they make some basic and consistent mistakes. Just as memory plays tricks on us when we try to look backward in time, so does imagination play tricks when we try to look forward. Using cutting-edge research, much of it original, Gilbert shakes, cajoles, persuades, tricks and jokes us into accepting the fact that happiness is not really what or where we thought it was. Among the unexpected questions he poses: Why are conjoined twins no less happy than the general population? When you go out to eat, is it better to order your favourite dish every time, or to try something new? If Ingrid Bergman hadn’t gotten on the plane at the end of Casablanca, would she and Bogey have been better off? Smart, witty, accessible and laugh-out-loud funny, Stumbling on Happiness brilliantly describes all that science has to tell us about the uniquely human ability to envision the future, and how likely we are to enjoy it when we get there.

  • Author : Kevin P. Murphy

Download or read book Machine Learning written by Kevin P. Murphy and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2012-08-24 with total page 1102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive introduction to machine learning that uses probabilistic models and inference as a unifying approach. Today's Web-enabled deluge of electronic data calls for automated methods of data analysis. Machine learning provides these, developing methods that can automatically detect patterns in data and then use the uncovered patterns to predict future data. This textbook offers a comprehensive and self-contained introduction to the field of machine learning, based on a unified, probabilistic approach. The coverage combines breadth and depth, offering necessary background material on such topics as probability, optimization, and linear algebra as well as discussion of recent developments in the field, including conditional random fields, L1 regularization, and deep learning. The book is written in an informal, accessible style, complete with pseudo-code for the most important algorithms. All topics are copiously illustrated with color images and worked examples drawn from such application domains as biology, text processing, computer vision, and robotics. Rather than providing a cookbook of different heuristic methods, the book stresses a principled model-based approach, often using the language of graphical models to specify models in a concise and intuitive way. Almost all the models described have been implemented in a MATLAB software package—PMTK (probabilistic modeling toolkit)—that is freely available online. The book is suitable for upper-level undergraduates with an introductory-level college math background and beginning graduate students.

Book Fire Modelling

    Book Details:
  • Author : G. Cox
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2004
  • ISBN : 9781860817281
  • Pages : 8 pages

Download or read book Fire Modelling written by G. Cox and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Digest explains the methodologies being used for the computer simulation of fire. It focuses on models of the fire itself: the essentially gas phase phenomenon at the heart of any fire simulation. Numerical modelling has become increasingly attractive for those wishing to fully exploit the freedoms to achieve safe, cost effective design offered by performance based regulation. This new edition of Digest 367 supersedes the version published in 1991. It explains fire growth and spread, and the two basic types of computer simulation methodologies. These are the zonal models, and the more universal field models that use the specialist discipline of computational fluid dynamics. Two types of field model are described which employ alternative approaches using Reynolds Averaged and Large Eddy methodologies to capture the influences of turbulence. An example shows the BRE CRISP model applied to the problem of smoke spread through a two storey theatre and the evacuation of the occupants.
