Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the role and meaning of probability in physical theory, in particular in two of the most successful theories of our age, quantum physics and statistical mechanics? Laws once conceived as universal and deterministic, such as Newton‘s laws of motion, or the second law of thermodynamics, are replaced in these theories by inherently probabilistic laws. This collection of essays by some of the world‘s foremost experts presents an in-depth analysis of the meaning of probability in contemporary physics. Among the questions addressed are: How are probabilities defined? Are they objective or subjective? What is their explanatory value? What are the differences between quantum and classical probabilities? The result is an informative and thought-provoking book for the scientifically inquisitive.

Book Generalised Thermostatistics

Download or read book Generalised Thermostatistics written by Jan Naudts and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-02-07 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The domain of non-extensive thermostatistics has been subject to intensive research over the past twenty years and has matured significantly. Generalised Thermostatistics cuts through the traditionalism of many statistical physics texts by offering a fresh perspective and seeking to remove elements of doubt and confusion surrounding the area. The book is divided into two parts - the first covering topics from conventional statistical physics, whilst adopting the perspective that statistical physics is statistics applied to physics. The second developing the formalism of non-extensive thermostatistics, of which the central role is played by the notion of a deformed exponential family of probability distributions. Presented in a clear, consistent, and deductive manner, the book focuses on theory, part of which is developed by the author himself, but also provides a number of references towards application-based texts. Written by a leading contributor in the field, this book will provide a useful tool for learning about recent developments in generalized versions of statistical mechanics and thermodynamics, especially with respect to self-study. Written for researchers in theoretical physics, mathematics and statistical mechanics, as well as graduates of physics, mathematics or engineering. A prerequisite knowledge of elementary notions of statistical physics and a substantial mathematical background are required.

Download or read book Statistical Physics written by Bernard H. Lavenda and published by Courier Dover Publications. This book was released on 2016-10-20 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suitable for graduate students in chemical physics, statistical physics, and physical chemistry, this text develops an innovative, probabilistic approach to statistical mechanics. The treatment employs Gauss's principle and incorporates Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac statistics to provide a powerful tool for the statistical analysis of physical phenomena. The treatment begins with an introductory chapter on entropy and probability that covers Boltzmann's principle and thermodynamic probability, among other topics. Succeeding chapters offer a case history of black radiation, examine quantum and classical statistics, and discuss methods of processing information and the origins of the canonical distribution. The text concludes with explorations of statistical equivalence, radiative and material phase transitions, and the kinetic foundations of Gauss's error law. Bibliographic notes complete each chapter.

Book E T Jaynes Papers on Probability Statistics and Statistical Physics

Download or read book E T Jaynes Papers on Probability Statistics and Statistical Physics written by Edwin T. Jaynes and published by Springer. This book was released on 1983-01-31 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first six chapters of this volume present the author's 'predictive' or information theoretic' approach to statistical mechanics, in which the basic probability distributions over microstates are obtained as distributions of maximum entropy (Le. , as distributions that are most non-committal with regard to missing information among all those satisfying the macroscopically given constraints). There is then no need to make additional assumptions of ergodicity or metric transitivity; the theory proceeds entirely by inference from macroscopic measurements and the underlying dynamical assumptions. Moreover, the method of maximizing the entropy is completely general and applies, in particular, to irreversible processes as well as to reversible ones. The next three chapters provide a broader framework - at once Bayesian and objective - for maximum entropy inference. The basic principles of inference, including the usual axioms of probability, are seen to rest on nothing more than requirements of consistency, above all, the requirement that in two problems where we have the same information we must assign the same probabilities. Thus, statistical mechanics is viewed as a branch of a general theory of inference, and the latter as an extension of the ordinary logic of consistency. Those who are familiar with the literature of statistics and statistical mechanics will recognize in both of these steps a genuine 'scientific revolution' - a complete reversal of earlier conceptions - and one of no small significance.

Book Probabilistic and Statistical Aspects of Quantum Theory

Download or read book Probabilistic and Statistical Aspects of Quantum Theory written by Alexander S. Holevo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-05-05 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to aspects of the foundations of quantum mechanics in which probabilistic and statistical concepts play an essential role. The main part of the book concerns the quantitative statistical theory of quantum measurement, based on the notion of positive operator-valued measures. During the past years there has been substantial progress in this direction, stimulated to a great extent by new applications such as Quantum Optics, Quantum Communication and high-precision experiments. The questions of statistical interpretation, quantum symmetries, theory of canonical commutation relations and Gaussian states, uncertainty relations as well as new fundamental bounds concerning the accuracy of quantum measurements, are discussed in this book in an accessible yet rigorous way. Compared to the first edition, there is a new Supplement devoted to the hidden variable issue. Comments and the bibliography have also been extended and updated.
