Book Socialisation et performances math matiques

Download or read book Socialisation et performances math matiques written by Bernard Courtebras and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Growth and Empowerment

Download or read book Growth and Empowerment written by Nicholas Stern and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2006-08-11 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite significant gains in promoting economic growth and living conditions (or "human progress") globally over the last twenty-five years, much of the developing world remains plagued by poverty and its attendant problems, including high rates of child mortality, illiteracy, environmental degradation, and war. In Growth and Empowerment, Nicholas Stern, Jean-Jacques Dethier, and F. Halsey Rogers propose a new strategy for development. Drawing on many years of work in development economics—in academia, in the field, and at international institutions such as the World Bank—the authors base their strategy on two interrelated approaches: building a climate that encourages investment and growth and at the same time empowering poor people to participate in that growth. This plan differs from other models for development, including the dogmatic approach of market fundamentalism popular in the 1980s and 1990s. Stern, Dethier, and Rogers see economic development as a dynamic process of continuous change in which entrepreneurship, innovation, flexibility, and mobility are crucial components and the idea of empowerment, as both a goal and a driver of development, is central. The book points to the unique opportunity today—after 50 years of successes and failures, and with a growing body of analytical work to draw on—to pursue new development strategies in both research and action.

Download or read book Becoming a Revolutionary written by Timothy Tackett and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here Timothy Tackett tests some of the diverse explanations of the origins of the French Revolution by examining the psychological itineraries of the individuals who launched it--the deputies of the Estates General and the National Assembly. Based on a wide variety of sources, notably the letters and diaries of over a hundred deputies, the book assesses their collective biographies and their cultural and political experience before and after 1789. In the face of the current "revisionist" orthodoxy, it argues that members of the Third Estate differed dramatically from the Nobility in wealth, status, and culture. Virtually all deputies were familiar with some elements of the Enlightenment, yet little evidence can be found before the Revolution of a coherent oppositional "ideology" or "discourse." Far from the inexperienced ideologues depicted by the revisionists, the Third Estate deputies emerge as practical men, more attracted to law, history, and science than to abstract philosophy. Insofar as they received advance instruction in the possibility of extensive reform, it came less from reading books than from involvement in municipal and regional politics and from the actions and decrees of the monarchy itself. Before their arrival in Versailles, few deputies envisioned changes that could be construed as "Revolutionary." Such new ideas emerged primarily in the process of the Assembly itself and continued to develop, in many cases, throughout the first year of the Revolution. Originally published in 1996. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Book David Hilbert and the Axiomatization of Physics 1898 1918

Download or read book David Hilbert and the Axiomatization of Physics 1898 1918 written by L. Corry and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Hilbert (1862-1943) was the most influential mathematician of the early twentieth century and, together with Henri Poincaré, the last mathematical universalist. His main known areas of research and influence were in pure mathematics (algebra, number theory, geometry, integral equations and analysis, logic and foundations), but he was also known to have some interest in physical topics. The latter, however, was traditionally conceived as comprising only sporadic incursions into a scientific domain which was essentially foreign to his mainstream of activity and in which he only made scattered, if important, contributions. Based on an extensive use of mainly unpublished archival sources, the present book presents a totally fresh and comprehensive picture of Hilbert’s intense, original, well-informed, and highly influential involvement with physics, that spanned his entire career and that constituted a truly main focus of interest in his scientific horizon. His program for axiomatizing physical theories provides the connecting link with his research in more purely mathematical fields, especially geometry, and a unifying point of view from which to understand his physical activities in general. In particular, the now famous dialogue and interaction between Hilbert and Einstein, leading to the formulation in 1915 of the generally covariant field-equations of gravitation, is adequately explored here within the natural context of Hilbert’s overall scientific world-view. This book will be of interest to historians of physics and of mathematics, to historically-minded physicists and mathematicians, and to philosophers of science.

Book A History of Mathematical Statistics from 1750 to 1930

Download or read book A History of Mathematical Statistics from 1750 to 1930 written by Anders Hald and published by Wiley-Interscience. This book was released on 1998-04-22 with total page 832 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-awaited second volume of Anders Hald's history of the development of mathematical statistics. Anders Hald's A History of Probability and Statistics and Their Applications before 1750 is already considered a classic by many mathematicians and historians. This new volume picks up where its predecessor left off, describing the contemporaneous development and interaction of four topics: direct probability theory and sampling distributions; inverse probability by Bayes and Laplace; the method of least squares and the central limit theorem; and selected topics in estimation theory after 1830. In this rich and detailed work, Hald carefully traces the history of parametric statistical inference, the development of the corresponding mathematical methods, and some typical applications. Not surprisingly, the ideas, concepts, methods, and results of Laplace, Gauss, and Fisher dominate his account. In particular, Hald analyzes the work and interactions of Laplace and Gauss and describes their contributions to modern theory. Hald also offers a great deal of new material on the history of the period and enhances our understanding of both the controversies and continuities that developed between the different schools. To enable readers to compare the contributions of various historical figures, Professor Hald has rewritten the original papers in a uniform modern terminology and notation, while leaving the ideas unchanged. Statisticians, probabilists, actuaries, mathematicians, historians of science, and advanced students will find absorbing reading in the author's insightful description of important problems and how they gradually moved toward solution.

Download or read book Mathematicians at war written by Laurent Mazliak and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-10-08 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous scientists have taken part in the war effort during World War I, but few gave it the passionate energy of the prominent Italian mathematician Volterra. As a convinced supporter of the cause of Britain and France, he struggled vigorously to carry Italy into the war in May 1915 and then developed a frenetic activity to support the war effort, going himself to the front, even though he was 55. This activity found an adequate echo with his French colleagues Borel, Hadamard and Picard. The huge correspondence they exchanged during the war, gives an extraordinary view of these activities, and raises numerous fundamental questions about the role of a scientist, and particularly a mathematician during WW I. It also offers a vivid documentation about the intellectual life of the time ; Volterra’s and Borel’s circles in particular were extremely wide and the range of their interests was not limited to their field of specialization. The book proposes the complete transcription of the aforementioned correspondence, annotated with numerous footnotes to give details on the contents. It also offers a general historical introduction to the context of the letters and several complements on themes related to the academic exchanges between France and Italy during the war.
