Book excerpt: The 2nd International Workshop on Statistical Methods in Video Processing, SMVP 2004, was held in Prague, Czech Republic, as an associated workshop of ECCV 2004, the 8th European Conference on Computer Vision. A total of 30 papers were submitted to the workshop. Of these, 17 papers were accepted for presentation and included in these proceedings, following a double-blind review process. The workshop had 42 registered participants. The focus of the meeting was on recent progress in the application of - vanced statistical methods to solve computer vision tasks. The one-day scienti?c program covered areas of high interest in vision research, such as dense rec- struction of 3D scenes, multibody motion segmentation, 3D shape inference, errors-in-variables estimation, probabilistic tracking, information fusion, optical ?owcomputation,learningfornonstationaryvideodata,noveltydetectionin- namic backgrounds, background modeling, grouping using feature uncertainty, and crowd segmentation from video. Its successful solution has numerous possibilities in applications like multimedia communications, surveillance, virtual reality, automatic navigation, medical prognosis, etc. One of the most powerful techniques for solving this problem is known as structure from motion (SfM). Briefy, the SfM problem is about recovering the absolute or relative depth of static and moving objects using video acquired from single or multiple video cameras. The most challenging problem is when only a monocular video is present and we require a dense estimate of the depth. Successful solution of this problem requires a detailed understanding of the geometry of the 3D world and its 2D projections on the image planes. However, the motion between adjacent frames of a video sequence is usually very small, thus introducing large errors in its estimation. Hence, in order to obtain a satisfactory solution, it is important to understand the statistics of these errors and their in teraction with the geometry of the problem. The overall aim of this thesis is to show how to combine the statistics describing the quality of the input video data with an understanding of the geometry, in order to obtain an accurate 3D scene reconstruction from a video sequence using the optical flow model. In our work, we pose the 3D reconstruction problem in an estimation-theoretic framew ork. We adopt the optical flow paradigm for modeling the motion between the frames of the video sequence. We show how the statistics of the errors in the input motion estimates are propagated through the 3D reconstruction algorithm and affect the quality of the output. We present a new result: that the 3D estimate is always statistically biased, and the magnitude of this bias is signifficant. In order to demonstrate our analysis in a practical application, we consider the problem of reconstructing a 3D model of a human face from video. An algorithm is proposed that obtains a robust 3D model by fusing two-frame estimates using stochastic approximation theory and then combines it with a generic face model in a Markov chain Monte Carlo optimization procedure. We address the question of how to automatically evaluate the quality of a 3D reconstruction from a video sequence, and presen a criterion using concepts from information theory . Finally, we propose a probabilistic registration algorithm that extends the results of our work to create holistic 3D models from multiple video streams.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Image based motion capture is a problem that has recently gained a lot of attention in the domain of understanding human motion in computer vision. The problem involves estimating the 3D configurations of a human body from a set of images and has applications that include human computer interaction, smart surveillance, video analysis and animation. This thesis takes a machine learning based approach to reconstructing 3D pose and motion from monocular images or video. It makes use of a collection of images and motion capture data to derive mathematical models that allow the recovery of full body configurations directly from image features. The approach is completely data-driven and avoids the use of a human body mode!. This makes the inference extremely fast. We formulate a class of regression based methods to distill a large training database of motion capture and image data into a compact model that generalizes to predicting pose from new images. The methods rely on using appropriately developed robust image descriptors, learning dynamical models of human motion, and kernelizing the input within a sparse regression framework. Firstly, it is shown how pose can effectively and efficiently be recovered from image silhouettes that are extracted using background subtraction. We exploit sparseness properties of the relevance vector machine for improved generalization and efficiency, and make use of a mixture of reg ressors for probabilistically handling ambiguities that are present in monocular silhouette based 3D reconstruction. The methods developed enable pose reconstruction from single images as weil as tracking motion in video sequences. Secondly, the framework is extended to recover 3D pose from cluttered images by introducing a suitable image encoding that is resistant to changes in background. We show that non-negative matrix factorization can be used to suppress background features and allow the regression to selectively cue on features from the foreground human body. Finally, we study image encoding methods in a broader context and present a novel multi-Ievel image encoding framework called 'hyperfeatures' that proves to be effective for object recognition and image classification tasks.

These conferences have been very successful, making ECCV a major event to the computer vision community. ECCV 2002 was the seventh in the series. The privilege of organizing it was shared by three universities: The IT University of Copenhagen, the University of Copenhagen, and Lund University, with the conference venue in Copenhagen. These universities lie ̈ geographically close in the vivid Oresund region, which lies partly in Denmark and partly in Sweden, with the newly built bridge (opened summer 2000) crossing the sound that formerly divided the countries. We are very happy to report that this year’s conference attracted more papers than ever before, with around 600 submissions. Still, together with the conference board, we decided to keep the tradition of holding ECCV as a single track conference. Each paper was anonymously refereed by three different reviewers. For the ?nal selection, for the ?rst time for ECCV, a system with area chairs was used. These met with the program chairsinLundfortwodaysinFebruary2002toselectwhatbecame45oralpresentations and 181 posters.Also at this meeting the selection was made without knowledge of the authors’identity.

We accepted 41 papers for oral and 149 papers for poster presentation. Several innovations were introduced into the review process. Second, we adopted a paper ranking system. Program committee members were asked to rank all the papers assigned to them, even those that were reviewed by additional reviewers. Third, we allowed authors to respond to the reviews consolidated in a discussion involving the area chair and the reviewers. Fourth, thereports,thereviews,andtheresponsesweremadeavailabletotheauthorsas well as to the program committee members. Our aim was to provide the authors with maximal feedback and to let the program committee members know how authors reacted to their reviews and how their reviews were or were not re?ected in the ?nal decision. Finally, we reduced the length of reviewed papers from 15 to 12 pages.
