Download or read book Probabilistic Benchmarking written by Andrew Banasiewicz and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-09-23 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is a ‘good’ outcome? In relation to others, and in relation to the past? Commonly associated with the ideas of benchmarking and baselining, comparative assessment is an important part of organizational management, but this broadly defined undertaking lacks clear conceptual framing and methodological foundations. At the same time, the readily available transactional data make robust tracking and measurement possible at an unprecedented scale, but also accentuate the impact of assessment paradox: To be truly meaningful, exact magnitudes-expressed values often need to be ‘translated’ into qualitative, assessment-laden categories, but that task is impeded by lack of established approaches for doing so. Inspired by these observations, Probabilistic Benchmarking frames the notions of benchmarking and baselining as two complementary but distinct mechanisms of comparative assessment that make use of informational contents of organizational data to contribute unbiased, systematic, and consistent evaluation of outcomes or states of interest. In that general context, this book provides much-needed conceptual and methodological clarity to guide construction and use of benchmarks and baselines, and re-casts the idea of assessment standards in the context of data-derived estimates, to better align the practice of comparative assessment with the emerging realities of the Age of Data. This pioneering research-based but application-minded book bridges the gap between theory and practice. It will greatly benefit professionals, business students and others interested in the broad domain of organizational assessment.

Download or read book Benchmarking of deemed to satisfy provisions in standards written by fib Fédération internationale du béton and published by fib Fédération internationale du béton. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Standards for specifying and ensuring the durability of new concrete structures are commonly of the prescriptive kind. fib Bulletin 76: Benchmarking of deemed-to-satisfy provisions in standards - Durability of reinforced concrete structures exposed to chlorides presents the benchmarking of a number of rules for chloride-induced corrosion as given in national codes such as European, US and Australian standards. This new benchmark determines the reliability ranges in the chloride-induced depassivation of rebar if the deemed-to-satisfy rules of different countries are taken into consideration. It does not only involve (probabilistic) calculations using input mainly based on short-term and rapid laboratory-test data but also involves input based on an independent assessment of existing structures. The reliability analyses are carried out using the probabilistic design approach for chloride-induced corrosion presented in fib Bulletin 34: Model Code for Service Life Design (2006), fib Model Code for Concrete Structures 2010 and ISO 16204:2012. The work compares the calculated reliability ranges thus determined with the target reliabilities proposed by current specifications and, based on the comparison, offers a proposal for the improvement of deemed-to-satisfy rules and specifications. fib Bulletin 76 presents and discusses in detail the input data for the examined model parameters and offers an extensive annexe documenting the values of the individual parameters used in the analyses. It thus provides a reliable database for the performance-based probabilistic service-life design of concrete structures exposed to chlorides, be they in the form of salt fog, sea water or de-icing salts.

Download or read book Computer Safety Reliability and Security written by Erwin Schoitsch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-08-11 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers and microprocessors are indispensable in modern technical systems, their deployment spanning the domains automotive, railway, aerospace, and transportation, security, energy supply, telecommunication, critical infrastructures and process ind- tries. They perform tasks that a few decades ago were very difficult if not impossible. As they perform these tasks with increasing efficiency, more and more tasks are shifted from hardware to software, which means that the dependability of computer systems becomes crucial for the safety, security and reliability of technical systems. With the so-called “embedded systems” (becoming more and more intelligent, networked and co-operating with each other, with humans and the environment) computers have invaded all aspects of daily life. New paradigms have arisen, like ubiquitous computing, systems-of-systems, energy and resource awareness, enormous complexity issues and the like, requiring a more holistic systems view as well. th So, after 31 years of SAFECOMP, the emphasis of the 29 event is on critical - bedded systems, which are almost omnipresent. Their impact on our lives, risks and challenges are often not well understood (underestimated or exaggerated). The p- mary issue is to cope with complexity, new failure modes and resource management, due to shrinking feature size, multi-core systems and management of multiple variants, while maintaining dependability properties and robustness.

Download or read book Algorithmic Foundations of Robotics XII written by Ken Goldberg and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-06 with total page 942 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the outcomes of the 12th International Workshop on the Algorithmic Foundations of Robotics (WAFR 2016). WAFR is a prestigious, single-track, biennial international meeting devoted to recent advances in algorithmic problems in robotics. Robot algorithms are an important building block of robotic systems and are used to process inputs from users and sensors, perceive and build models of the environment, plan low-level motions and high-level tasks, control robotic actuators, and coordinate actions across multiple systems. However, developing and analyzing these algorithms raises complex challenges, both theoretical and practical. Advances in the algorithmic foundations of robotics have applications to manufacturing, medicine, distributed robotics, human–robot interaction, intelligent prosthetics, computer animation, computational biology, and many other areas. The 2016 edition of WAFR went back to its roots and was held in San Francisco, California – the city where the very first WAFR was held in 1994. Organized by Pieter Abbeel, Kostas Bekris, Ken Goldberg, and Lauren Miller, WAFR 2016 featured keynote talks by John Canny on “A Guided Tour of Computer Vision, Robotics, Algebra, and HCI,” Erik Demaine on “Replicators, Transformers, and Robot Swarms: Science Fiction through Geometric Algorithms,” Dan Halperin on “From Piano Movers to Piano Printers: Computing and Using Minkowski Sums,” and by Lydia Kavraki on “20 Years of Sampling Robot Motion.” Furthermore, it included an Open Problems Session organized by Ron Alterovitz, Florian Pokorny, and Jur van den Berg. There were 58 paper presentations during the three-day event. The organizers would like to thank the authors for their work and contributions, the reviewers for ensuring the high quality of the meeting, the WAFR Steering Committee led by Nancy Amato as well as WAFR’s fiscal sponsor, the International Federation of Robotics Research (IFRR), led by Oussama Khatib and Henrik Christensen. WAFR 2016 was an enjoyable and memorable event.

Presents methods for organizing and treating uncertainties in a generic and prioritized perspective. Illustrates practical difficulties and solutions encountered according to the level of complexity, information available and regulatory and financial constraints. Discusses best practice in uncertainty modeling, propagation and sensitivity analysis through a variety of statistical and numerical methods. Reviews recent standards, references and available software, providing an essential resource for engineers and risk analysts in a wide variety of industries. This book provides a guide to dealing with quantitative uncertainty in engineering and modelling and is aimed at practitioners, including risk-industry regulators and academics wishing to develop industry-realistic methodologies.
