Book An Imperial Path to Modernity

Download or read book An Imperial Path to Modernity written by Jung-Sun N. Han and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Imperial Path to Modernity examines the role of liberal intellectuals in reshaping transnational ideas and internationalist aspirations into national values and imperial ambitions in early twentieth-century Japan. Perceiving the relationship between liberalism and the international world order, a cohort of Japanese thinkers conformed to liberal ideas and institutions to direct Japan’s transformation into a liberal empire in Asia. To sustain and rationalize the imperial enterprise, these Japanese liberals sought to make the domestic political stage less hostile to liberalism. Facilitating the creation of print-mediated public opinion, liberal intellectuals attempted to enlist the new middle class as a social ally in circulating liberal ideas and practices within Japan and throughout the empire. In tracing the interconnections between liberalism and the imperial project, Jung-Sun N. Han focuses on the ideas and activities of Yoshino Sakuzo (1878–1933), who was and is remembered as a champion of prewar Japanese liberalism and Taisho democracy. Drawing insights from intellectual history, cultural studies, and international relations, this study argues that prewar Japanese liberalism grew out of the efforts of intellectuals such as Yoshino who worked to devise a transnational institution to govern the Japanese empire.

Book Japans Struggle With Internation

Download or read book Japans Struggle With Internation written by Ian Nish and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This a study of the Manchurian and Shanghai crises, the first serious confrontation between Japan and the world community. The Manchurian crisis was one of the major international crises of the period between World Wars I and II. For Britain and America, it bred a new distrust of Japanese long-term national objectives. It also brought home to all concerned the weaknesses of the League of Nations and the other instruments of collective security which had been devised to deal with problems of the Pacific Ocean area. The first focus of this study is on how one of the international bodies of the time, the League of Nations, attempted to cope with the emergency that broke out in the east in September 1931. The second focus is on the clash of attitudes in Japanese politics. The period covered by the Manchurian crisis was the point when civilian government in Japan was seriously challenged for the first time in the 20th century. The book offers a fresh account of the crisis, making use of new materials, in Japanese and in English, which have become available and which have been drawn upon for this work. These throw new light on the struggles both within Japan and among League enthusiasts to ensure that Japan, the Asian-state which was at once most stable and economically most successful, should not end up in isolation.

Book Japan s international Youth

Download or read book Japan s international Youth written by Roger Goodman and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1990 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A striking aspect of Japan's growing international activity is the return home each year of thousands of children who have lived abroad as a result of their parents' work. Traditionally, it has been widely believed that these children were stigmatized and that they faced severe problems in adjusting to the realities of living in Japanese society. Drawing on his long-term fieldwork in one of the special schools set up to receive these children, this book is the first to challenge these ideas. Goodman argues that the convergence of several factors--particularly parental status and a powerful new political rhetoric stressing "internationalization"--is making these returnee children the vanguard of a new social elite.
