Book Interviewing in Social Science Research

Download or read book Interviewing in Social Science Research written by Lee Ann Fujii and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is interviewing and when is this method useful? What does it mean to select rather than sample interviewees? Once the researcher has found people to interview, how does she build a working relationship with her interviewees? What should the dynamics of talking and listening in interviews be? How do researchers begin to analyze the narrative data generated through interviews? Lee Ann Fujii explores the answers to these inquiries in Interviewing in Social Science Research, the latest entry in the Routledge Series on Interpretive Methods. This short, highly readable book explores an interpretive approach to interviewing for purposes of social science research. Using an interpretive methodology, the book examines interviewing as a relational enterprise. As a relational undertaking, interviewing is more akin to a two-way dialogue than a one-way interrogation. Fujii examines the methodological foundations for a relational approach to interviewing, while at the same time covering many of the practical nuts and bolts of relational interviewing. Examples come from the author’s experiences conducting interviews in Bosnia, Rwanda, and the United States, and from relevant literatures across a variety of social scientific disciplines. Appendices to the book contain specific tips and suggestions for relational interviewing in addition to interview excerpts that give readers a sense of how relational interviews unfold. This book will be of great value to graduate students and researchers from across the social sciences who are considering or planning to use interviews in their research, and can be easily used by academics for teaching courses or workshops in social science methods.

Download or read book Laura s Ghost written by Courtenay Stallings and published by Fayetteville Mafia Press. This book was released on 2020-10-20 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1990, the groundbreaking television series Twin Peaks, co-created by David Lynch and Mark Frost, opened with a murder mystery when a beautiful homecoming queen, wrapped in plastic, washed up on a cold and rocky beach. Laura Palmer's character began as a plot device that triggered a small town to face its fractured self. But after three seasons and a film, Laura Palmer is no longer just a plot device. Instead of solely focusing on the murderer, like most traditional storytelling at the time, the audience gets to know the victim, a complex young woman who explores her sexuality and endures incredible abuse. Laura's Ghost: Women Speak About Twin Peaks is an examination of Laura Palmer's legacy on the 30th anniversary of Twin Peaks. Palmer's character was one of the few frank and horrific representations of sexual abuse victims which did not diminish the strength and complexity of the victim. Sheryl Lee, who played Laura Palmer, discusses the challenges of the role and how it has impacted herself as well as women she has met over the years, many of whom are survivors of sexual abuse. The role demanded Lee give all of her vulnerability as an actor to this role. This role is one she cannot escape, one with which she will forever be identified. It's a role that still haunts her today. For many women, this character represents them. Here was a woman who was not just a victim, but who was owning her sexuality as well—a woman coming into her own and discovering her sources of power. This book is a reckoning in which women from the show and community speak about grief, mischief, humor, sexuality, strength, weakness, wickedness, and survival.

Book My Road to Ithaca

Download or read book My Road to Ithaca written by Michael Panayotopoulos and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2023-01-05 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An autobiography, this book is about the events and personalities of one hundred years of modern legends through the eyes of one who has lived it, stated in a uniquely opinionated manner. It includes wars and whores, the inside of business and politics on several continents, with unexpurgated revelations of individuals known to nearly everyone who lived during those times or learned about them since. Royalty, film figures, heads of state, corporate tycoons, and politicians parade through the pages as part of the author's daily life. Twentieth century history comes alive with experiences in Baltic wars, Adolf Hitler's inner circle, Greek government coups, CIA mercenaries in Africa, American heiresses, and the privileges of diplomatic office. Related by one born into riches and relegated to poverty, the narrative progresses via family scoundrels, political involvements, and escape and escapades in America. An unintendedly adventurous life from wealth and privilege to penniless, left with the asset of a brilliant mind to tell the story.

Book Child Second Language Acquisition

Download or read book Child Second Language Acquisition written by Sonia Rocca and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2007-10-26 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one of the first books in child second language acquisition (SLA), this book focuses on the core area of tense-aspect morphology, reporting on three L1-Italian children learning L2 English vs. three L1-English children learning L2 Italian. An innovative longitudinal/bidirectional research design, where two languages represent both source and target, show effects of language transfer in learners that, because of their age, still have potential to become native-speakers of the target. An unusual feature of this book is that relevant studies of acquisition of L2 Italian, some heretofore only in Italian, are reviewed, incorporated into the study and made available to a more general audience. Though the main focus is on child SLA, crucial comparisons to both first language acquisition vs. adult SLA are presented. This approach will thus be of interest more generally to readers in first and second language acquisition and child development.

Book Sport and Foreign Policy in a Globalizing World

Download or read book Sport and Foreign Policy in a Globalizing World written by Steven J. Jackson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization is effecting a close convergence of sport and foreign policy. In order to respond to novel social, political, cultural and economic pressures, states are increasingly turning to sport as a foreign policy instrument; and they cannot ignore the corresponding influence that global sport has on their core interests. This book is devoted to exploring this relationship in detail. Although any examination of sport and foreign policy inevitably focuses on issues related to both politics and international relations, the primary intention here is to consider the dimensions associated with foreign policy. This book was previously published as a special issue of Sport in Society.

Book Football Culture and Power

Download or read book Football Culture and Power written by David J. Leonard and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean when a hit that knocks an American football player unconscious is cheered by spectators? What are the consequences of such violence for the participants of this sport and for the entertainment culture in which it exists? This book brings together scholars and sport commentators to examine the relationship between American football, violence and the larger relations of power within contemporary society. From high school and college to the NFL, Football, Culture, and Power analyses the social, political and cultural imprint of America’s national pastime. The NFL’s participation in and production of hegemonic masculinity, alongside its practices of racism, sexism, heterosexism and ableism, provokes us to think deeply about the historical and contemporary systems of violence we are invested in and entertained by. This social scientific analysis of American football considers both the positive and negative power of the game, generating discussion and calling for accountability. It is fascinating reading for all students and scholars of sports studies with an interest in American football and the wider social impact of sport.
