Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Recollections and Impressions of Abraham Lincoln Someone has said, That nation is death-stricken that ceases to reverence the memory of her great men. And so we in America are raising memorials to our Washingtons, our Lincolns, our Grants, our Roosevelts, and are commemorating their birth days. The British are doing the same for their great heroes. There is a good deal in common between our British cousins and ourselves. John Wesley was a Britisher but there are millions in our land to-day who also claim him as theirs. No man could possibly be more of an American than was Abraham Lincoln, but to-day he belongs to the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences About Abraham Lincoln In the dawn of the 20th century, looking backward through the vista of time, I recall my first knowledge of Lincoln. Early in the forties, my father, then a resident of the state of Indiana, had correspondence with him pertaining to business of the anti - slavery cause, in which my father was a zealous worker; and previous to this Lincoln had declare-d his opposition to slavery and its extension, basing his opinion on facts experienced in the South where he had been reared. Thus I came to know something of his individual character and sterling qualities of mind and heart prior to meeting him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Reminiscences of Abraham Lincoln These personal reminiscences, written in a fragmentary way by my husband during the last few months of his life, when he was confined to the house the greater part of the time, I have gathered together, feeling that the friends who knew something of his great admiration for Abraham Lincoln would be interested. Much of it came to him from close personal observation, and at a time when it was indelibly impressed on his mind and heart. It is this that would seem to make it worth while to those who knew him best. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Abraham Lincoln

Download or read book Abraham Lincoln written by Robert Brewster Stanton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-27 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: Personal Memories of the Man When the dark days of '61 came my father recognized that perhaps God, in his inscrutable knowledge, knew a better way, and he became a war parson and was one of the foremost in his calling to hold up the hands of the war President, and, unlike some other abolitionists of that day, he stayed by him to the end. It has always been my belief that the reason why Abraham Lincoln and my father became such Warm friends was be cause he brought to the President a cer tain inside knowledge of the South and its people, from an earnest and loyal fol lower, and Mr. Lincoln welcomed such direct information when they discussed together the perplexing problems of those days, as they so often did. Thus it came about that I, even so young, going with my father, came to know Mr. Lincoln personally, and was able to sit with him for hours at a time, in his private office at the White House, and listen to those talks and discussions and observe him at close range, and study his every word and action at times when there was nothing to disturb, and when only one or two others were in the room. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Abraham Lincoln: By Distinguised Men of His Time T was mainly with the View of accumulating a mass of trustworthy evidence concerning the personal traits and private utterances of Abraham Lincoln that I conceived the plan and approached the task of uniting in one or more volumes the Opinions of the most distinguished characters, still surviving, of the great war which produced them. He) begged the oflicial board to let him attend' school aysar two before starting on his circuit. He felt that he needed a better education. But they told him that to- preach. The4 gospel was the very best school or college be-, tween heaven and earth. Then he consulted with his parents. His father advised him to go to school. His mother threw her arms around his neck, kissed him, and said: Peter, my son. Go in the name of the Lord and he will teach you. And so he went. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln Mr. President and Gentlemen - As I am informed, the Cherry Tree Club meets once each year to commemorate the birthday of the Father of his Country. Your club is composed almost entirely of'young men, most of whom were born since the close of the Civil War, and few, if any, of you were old enough at that time to have any personal recollection of the events that marked the most tragic period in the history of the Republic. I am asked to portray the character of the man who was not only the central figure in that Titanic struggle, but whose memory is, and will ever be, enshrined in the hearts of all' liberty-loving people throughout the habitable globe. May I not hope that you will bear with me if I shall attempt more than a brief pass ing tribute to the character of this remarkable man. May I not be indulged in an endeavor to quicken in your minds the meaning of that great epoch in our history, while bring ing to your attention some of the conspicuous characteristics of the man about whom I am to speak, and some of the events connected with which he will always be the one prominent personality. In devotion to his country; in breadth of statesman ship; in exalted character; in blameless private life, the name of Abraham Lincoln will grow brighter with the ages - the synonym of true greatness - the harbinger of that period to which we all look, of peace on earth, good will to man. In his early days he struck his roots deep down into the common soil of the earth, and in his latest years his head towered and shone among the stars! Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Every-Day Life of Abraham Lincoln, Vol. 2: A Narrative and Descriptive Biography With Pen-Pictures and Personal Recollections by Those Who Knew Him Dr. George B. Loring, Of Massachusetts, who was one of the first to meet Lincoln after his arrival in Washington, says: I saw him on his arrival, and when he made his first appearance in a public place. I was standing in the upper hall of Willard's Hotel, conversing with a friend and listening to the confused talk of the crowded drawing-room adjoining. As We stood there, a tall and awkward form appeared above the stairs, especially conspicuous, as it came into view, for a new and stylish hat. It was evidently President Lincoln, whom neither of us had seen before. As soon as his presence was known, the hall was thronged from the drawing-rooms. He seemed somewhat startled by the crowd, did not remove his hat, wended his way somewhat rapidly and with mere passing recognition, and took shelter in his room. When the crowd had dispersed, my friend and myself - although we had opposed his election - called upon him to pay our respects. He received us with great cordiality, spoke freely of the difficulties by which he was surrounded. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Abraham Lincoln Servant of the People Classic Reprint written by Carl Erhard Wahlstrom and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-21 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln, Servant of the People You will recall that during the dark days of the Civil War Lincoln's attention was called to certain records. These records seemed to indicate that one Mrs. Lydia Bixby of Boston was the mother of five boys who had enlisted in the serv ice of their country and all of whom had been killed in battle. This information so stirred the tender heart of Lincoln that he wrote to Mrs. Bixby one of the most sympathetic letters ever written. 80 beautiful was this letter that it has become known thruout the world as a gem of literature. It was to this letter which Dr. Barton referred when he said Lincoln had blundered, for by his investigation he disclosed that only four of Mrs. Bixby's sons had served their coun try; that two of these had died in battle and that one of the other two sons had deserted to the enemy. He proved conclusively that two sons, one of whom had not been in the service, lived in Massachusetts for many years after the close of the war. Weir Mitchell, Mr. Maurice Thompson, Messrs. Houghton, Mifflin, & Co., Messrs. Charles Scribner's Sons, Mr. George Boker and The J. B. Lippincott Co., Messrs. The publishers of Walt Whitman are the publishers of the present volume, for which, moreover, the poem by Mr. Paul Laurence Dunbar was written. Of Mr. R. H. Stoddard's sonnet, "Abraham Lincoln," the last two lines have been changed by the author for the republication of the poem in this place. The frontispiece of the volume is used through the courtesy of Messrs. A. W. Elson & Co., by whom the original picture is copyrighted. The Editor would especially record his obligation to the New York State Library School at Albany for the use of an unpublished bibliography of poems relating to Lincoln - the work of Miss Mary L. Sutliff. Though the selections presented here are few, it is believed that by the aid of this bibliography the broad field from which they are taken has been entirely surveyed. Book Addresses in Memory of Abraham Lincoln

Download or read book Addresses in Memory of Abraham Lincoln written by Military Order of the Loyal Commandery and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Addresses in Memory of Abraham Lincoln: Delivered Before the Minnesota Commandery of the Loyal Legion of the United States, 1903-1910 The personal element in history always appeals to children. How Abraham Lincoln looked and what he did are of more interest to them than the origin, development, and destruction of slavery. Only as the institution of slavery has a direct bearing upon the personal life of the great emancipator or of some other character, does it awaken their interest and hold their attention. The adult mind studies policies, and the growth and develop ment of ideas, and in their realization observes the personal achievements of the men and women whose lives have been affected by the working out of the world's great problems. For a time the abstract idea may be paramount in the adult mind, but the human element by which it has been moulded, or which it has moulded, must of necessity excite the interest and rivet the attention.
