Book Projections of Education Statistics to 2008

Download or read book Projections of Education Statistics to 2008 written by William J. Hussar and published by Bernan Press(PA). This book was released on 1998 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document is the 27th report in a series begun in 1964. It provides revisions to projections shown in "Projections of Education Statistics to 2007" and includes statistics on elementary and secondary schools and institutions of higher education at the national level. Included are projections for enrollment, graduates, classroom teachers, and expenditures to the year 2008. The report also includes projections of public elementary and secondary enrollment and high school graduates to the year 2008 at the state level. These projections reflect revisions influenced by the 1990 Census with the incorporation of 1996 estimates and latest assumptions for the fertility rate, net immigration, and mortality rate. A methodology section describes the models and assumptions used to develop the national projections, which are based on a cohort survival model, an age-specific enrollment rate model, exponential smoothing models, and econometric models. Most of the projections include three alternatives based on different assumptions about growth paths. Total public and private elementary and secondary enrollment is projected to increase from 51.4 million in 1996 to 54.5 million in 2006, but then total enrollment is projected to decrease to 54.3 million by the year 2008. Higher education is projected to increase from an estimated 14.3 million in 1996 to 16.1 million by 2008. Increases are also projected for high school graduates, the number of bachelor's degrees, the number of classroom teachers, expenditures per pupil, and teacher salaries. Data are presented in 71 figures and 52 tables, with an additional 38 tables in 4 technical appendixes. A glossary and discussion of data sources are included in the technical appendixes. (SLD)

Download or read book Social Torture written by Chris Dolan and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2009-04-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Director of the Refugee Law Project at the University of Makerere, Kampala, Uganda, Dolan offers a behind-the-scenes, cross-disciplinary study of one of Africa's longest running and most intractable conflicts. This book shows how, alongside the activities of the Lord's Resistance Army, government decisions and actions on the ground, consolidated by humanitarian interventions and silences, played a central role in creating a massive yet only very belatedly recognized humanitarian crisis. Not only individuals, but society as a whole, came to exhibit symptoms typical of torture, and the perpetrator-victim dichotomy became blurred. It is such phenomena, and the complex of social, political, economic and cultural dynamics which underpin them, which the author describes as social torture. Building on political economy, social anthropology, discourse analysis, international relations and psychoanalytic approaches to violence, this book offers an important analytical instrument for all those seeking entry points through which to address entrenched conflicts, whether from a conflict resolution, post-conflict recovery or transitional justice perspective.

Download or read book An Atlantic Crossing written by Martin Lawn and published by Symposium Books Ltd. This book was released on 2008-05-12 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the International Examinations Inquiry (IEI), an international, well-funded scientific project that operated in the 1930s, attracting key world figures in educational research, and which undertook significant exchanges of data. Originally involving the USA, Scotland, England, France, Germany and Switzerland, the IEI grew to include Norway, Sweden and Finland. Funded by Carnegie money, these researchers included major comparative educationalists, New Education Fellowship academics, statisticians and educational psychologists. They met at a significant time in the emergence of international scientific work in educational research between the USA and Europe; they were a midway stage between earlier individual contacts by well-travelled researchers, usually towards North America, and the development of joint research projects, sustained over time. The focus of the IEI was on methods of examining pupils for the coming expansion of secondary education, but their key problems were to do with establishing standardized methods of measurement, international scholarly communication and comparative understandings of national diversity. The IEI researchers acted to support national achievements and strategies within the borders of the nation and internationally, to exchange methods and results. In retrospect, they appear to be visible in their knowledge communities and national education histories but invisible in their internationalism.
