Examples: Small businesses, family-owned companies, startups, and many corporations fall into this category. Public Enterprises: Ownership: Public enterprises are owned and operated by the government at either the national, regional, or local level. However, they can still have private shareholders. Governance: Decision-making may involve government officials, a board of directors, or a combination of both. They're subject to governmental regulations and oversight. Funding: Public enterprises can receive funding from government budgets, taxes, bonds, or even revenue from their operations. They may also can issue shares on the stock market. Examples: Public utilities (such as water and electricity providers), nationalized industries (like postal services or railways), and some healthcare and education institutions can be publicly owned and operated. Global Enterprises: Scope: Global enterprises operate across national boundaries, engaging in business activities in multiple countries. They have a presence in various markets around the world. Ownership: Global enterprises can be either private or public. They may be multinational corporations with subsidiaries in different countries. Governance: Governance structures vary, but they often involve complex organizational hierarchies to manage operations in diverse locations. Funding: Funding sources can include revenue from operations, loans, investments, and sometimes government incentives or subsidies. Examples: Many of the world's largest companies, such as Google, Apple, and ExxonMobil, are global enterprises with operations spanning multiple countries and continents. Book Understanding the Private Public Divide

Download or read book Understanding the Private Public Divide written by Avner Offer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-07 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Markets are taken as the norm in economics and in much of political and media discourse. But if markets are superior why does the public sector remain so large? Avner Offer provides a distinctive new account of the effective temporal limits on private, public, and social activity. Understanding the Private–Public Divide accounts for the division of labour between business and the public sector, how it changes over time, where the boundaries ought to run, and the harm that follows if they are violated. He explains how finance forces markets to focus on short-term objectives and why business requires special privileges in return for long-term commitment. He shows how a private sector policy bias leads to inequality, insecurity, and corruption. Integrity used to be the norm and it can be achieved again. Only governments can manage uncertainty in the long-term interests of society, as shown by the challenge of climate change.

Download or read book Global Business Local Law written by Amanda Perry-Kessaris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume establishes a theoretical framework for exploring the role of host state legal systems (courts and bureaucracies) in mediating relations between foreign investment, civil society and government actors. It then demonstrates the application of that framework in the context of the south Indian city of Bengaluru (formerly Bangalore). Drawing on the 'law-and-community' approach of Roger Cotterrell, the volume identifies three mechanisms through which law might, in theory, ensure that social relations are productive: by expressing any mutual trust which may hold actors together, by ensuring that actors participate fully in social life and by coordinating the differences that hold actors apart. Empirical data reveals that each of these legal mechanisms is at work in Bengaluru. However, their operation is limited and skewed by the extent to which actors use, abuse and/or avoid them. Furthermore, these legal mechanisms are being eroded as a direct result of the World Bank's 'investment climate' discourse, which privileges the interests and values of foreign investors over those of other actors.
